Building a CAD/CAM Box

Hey Guys,
It's been a few years since I build a machine and I just wanted someone to double check my build and let me know if there is any compatibility issues or anything I may be missing. This will be a MasterCam/SolidWorks work station and I'm looking for all out speed. Below is what I came up with after a lot of research.

I'm assuming the fan/heatsink comes with the cpu? Is it adequate? I'm trying to purchase everything through Newegg so any suggestions just make sure I can get it there.

THANKS!

Please answer the stickied "ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS FIRST!" so that we can help you better.

Also, what's more important for your usage? More RAM or faster CPU performance?

Thanks Danny. I think 24GB is more then I'll ever need.

Clock speed is the most important factor for MasterCam. Second would be RAM. Third would be Video RAM.

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc

MasterCam/Solidworks

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?

$3500

3) Where do you live?

Washington State

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. The word "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.

Complete system

5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.

Nothing, New

6) Will you be overclocking?

No.

7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?

23"-24"

8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?

ASAP

9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? eSATA? Onboard video? etc.

6Gb/s

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit?

Purchasing 64Bit

Ok, is a 10% CPU performance increase + 8GB more RAM worth an extra $800 for you?

Not really. I'm pretty solid with the price. Under $3500.

Well I ask because you're basically spending an extra $800+ for 10% CPU performance increase + 8GB more RAM right now with your current setup. The Sandy Bridge (SB) Intel Xeon E3-1230 is only 10% slower than that Intel Xeon W3690 yet costs $850 less but you're limited to about 16GB of RAM with the SB setup. Then there's the moherboard: You can find a fairly similar socket LGA 1155 motherboard for $100 less than that Asus LGA 1366 mobo you have now but the LGA 1366 route does support 24GB of RAM.

So again: Is an extra 10% CPU performance increase + an additional 8GB of RAM worth an extra $950 price increase?

The thing is when I process a tool path in MasterCam I can sit and wait 10min for one tool path to finish or things like turning on and off solid shading taking 2 seconds. 2 seconds 60 times a day adds up quick. Lets say a savings of 1hr a week of my time can make up for the cost difference in a month.

I would like the option of moving to a better chipset then the x58 but I need all out speed on every channel.

What about this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115066

It's right on par and a lot cheaper?

Thats a synthetic benchmark which has no bearing on real world performance unless you know with absolutely 100% certainty that the program you're using has the same performance characteristics and behavior.
So if I went with the E3-1275 (meet ya in the middle...) what mobo/memory combo?

I'd recommend the following then:

two of this RAM set: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820139262

Thanks.

Here's my list now. Does the cpu come with a heatsink/fan? Is there a better one? Needs to be quiet. The monitor is actually going with my old machine to the shop floor. I have a 27" myself.

If you don't need the onboard video of the 1275, you can drop down to the 1270 which is $45 less on acccount this CPU + mobo combo deal:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.690563

The 1270 and 1275 are the same CPU except for the 1270 not having an onboard GPU and using about 15W less power.

I can't tell if that CPU comes with a HSF or not. In any case, the stock HSF isn't that quiet. I recommend this HSF;
$40 - Thermalright Cogage TRUE Spirit HSF

So that heatsink will drop right in? No adapter needed?

Well you'd have to install the HSF backplate behind the motherboard in order to use that HSF. But the installation is relatively easy.

They show the adapter out of stock. Any other options?

Try this HSF then:
$29 - Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus HSF for LGA 1366 and LGA 1156

Could I run 2 of the Crucial SSD's in Raid?

I don't need anymore then128gb but could use the extra speed.

Sorry for all the questions, just wanna get this thing dialed. My bosses said my computer should catch my desk on fire it's so eff'ing fast...

Well its locked down now. Just gotta make the proposal look nice and submit to Management on Monday.

I'm sure I'll need some help with Bios setup of things like memory speed.

Thanks again Danny!

Got authorization. Parts on order!

I'm gonna buy ViceVersa and run it as a windows service. This way I don't have to run files off the server, I can just setup a sync and run them from my super sick raid array :D

I got the new machine built! Drives are pretty fast....

Raid0-1.png

Still got a lot of work to do!

This thing looks pretty stout, I use the same programs and am thinking of building a new machine. Wanted to see how yours was holding up and if you are happy with it or if you would change anything?
