I posted a thread here about two months ago about a build I was about to buy. We decided on a 955BE with an ASUS mobo. Before I bought, I decided to save up a little more for SB and see what happens. I was seriously considering pulling the trigger on a 2500k build when this entire recall happened.

My question is, is SB worth it? During my first post there was a lot of hype and excitement for SB, and now it seems like a disappointment, not just because of the recall, but because it wasn't the chip everyone was hoping for. So, should I wait? Or is it not worth it? I'll be using netbeans, dreamweaver, maybe photoshop and gaming.

I've done some research and some say the motherboards will be back mid-February, other in April. What's the deal?

IMO, SB is still worth it. It offers a price to performance ratio that is just not matched by any current Intel or AMD CPU. However there were a few teething issues with the Sandy Bridge based motherboards. So while it may suck that the current Sandy Bridge mobos are a bit less than stellar, at least the recall should let motherboard manufacturers extra time to further tweak/fix/update their designs.

The updated chips will be shipping from Intel to the motherboard manufacturers in a week or two. However it's gonna take several weeks for those chips to reach those manufacturers and for the manufacturers to start putting them into their motherboards. As such, the updated motherboards won't be hitting the market till around April at the least. Maybe late March if we're all luck.
 
Im just not sure I see the benefit of sandy bridge for desktop computing. I mean in laptops/mcpc's where good integrated graphics make sense sure. But a desktop? Unless you need the hardware video conversion, id say get an i5 now and be happy.
 
Damn, I really want to wait, but I'm on a damn netbook. This is a hard decision, thanks for the info.
