Must include everything:
PC will be used for internet, word processing, music and very light non intense gaming. Prefer parts from newegg. Silence is also a prefered option. Cannot Exceed $600, cheeper is better. Prefer no less than 512megs of ram and must have a CDRW and DVD-ROM.

Processor
Heatsink
Motherboard
Video Card
Network Card
Sound Card
CD-RW
DVD-ROM
RAM
Hard Drive
Floppy Drive
Keyboard
Mouse
Modem
Speakers
Case
Monitor
Win XP

Go! Go! Go!

Heres what i put together last month. Prices are a little out of date. Parts come from newegg and a local store. I need to chop off a good $80 without making it crappy.

Network Card	Onboard VIA VT6103 10/100M
Sound Card	Onboard VT1612A 2-Channel AC97 CODEC
CD-RW/DVD	Lite On 16x DVDROM $31.00
RAM 2x Crucial 184 Pin 256MB DDR PC-2100 4T $74.00

Floppy Drive	Mitsumi Floppy Drive 1.44 MB $9.50
Keyboard	Aopen KB-858 Keyboard PS2 107keys $8.00
Mouse Microsoft Basic Optical w/Wheel Mouse USB/PS2 $13.00
Modem PCI 56K V.92 Voice - Intel, Rockwell or Lucent - Generic	$12.50
Speakers	Logitech X-120 2.0 Speaker $28.00
Case Micro-ATX Enlight 7602 Silver/Beige (Micro-ATX ) 300W Sleeve $40.00
Monitor Viewsonic E70F-5, 0.25dp 16inV 30-70KHz Flat $149.00
OS Windows XP Home $93.00

Yes, the shipping on the monitor alone is the killer...

However, if you don't give two shakes about monitor, save $36 with this:

http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=24-103-155&depa=1

You can further cut costs by picking up a $3 generic ball mouse. That should basically bring you into $600 range.

Or...we could scrap the athlonxp/biostar and go for a K6-2 or something.

$600 is hard to work with if we're still trying to keep relatively modern.

But I rose to the challenge. Hope you like it, yeah.

I would have to recommend buying the monitor and hard drive somewhere like Best Buy or an office supply store when they have them cheap after rebate.

Also, no offense, but the one provided above will never power up . . . no power supply listed. Just a minor detail.

Hmm, yes, I just noticed that, thanks for pointing it out.
Yes, this is tougher than I thought.

why are u trying to build one for $600?
save up some serious $$ and then try again :D

I think wmbjr is referring to the one in my list. It doesn't have a PSU.

Well, we broke $600 without a PSU. You don't really need electricity, do you? :p

For a friend of the girlfriend. Shes has a very limited budget.

For that price and the requirement of a monitor and WinXP, this might be one of the times I say go with Dell or some other prebuilt. Their prices on low-end models can be good, esp if you can find coupons or other offers.

Just get a Dell. You can get one with a monitor for around $400.

and its also a piece of shit about 1/4 the quality of something i can build for about $100 - $200 more.

I allready looked at that option. ;)

Why would she need 512 of RAM? Ditch the floppy too. You can throw linux on the box too. Lindows would probably suffice. Also, you can get a DVD/CDRW combo instead of two drives. You might find better prices by checking out other shops than newegg.

I'd like to see you TRY to beat Dell when they have this sort of deal, which is fairly often really. Throw in a monitor and you're actually UNDER budget, with a P4 2.66.

Yeah, Dell's deals LOOK appealing, until you see one of their systems benchmarked alongside a home built system of the same specs...
My boss has a 3.06ghz HT w/ 1gb pc1066, and a radeon 9700 pro from dell that can't even run halo well. They're disgustingly poorly designed.

As soon as you throw in the words "light gaming" you throw OUT Dell 2400s. Intel "extreme graphics" that are not even current generation "extreme graphics" that you can't upgrade due to it having NO AGP SLOT. Never mind the fact that for those low end barebones systems, you typically only get a system recovery disk, not a driver disk and WinXP OS disk.

GF4MX is minimum for "light gaming" anymore. For a PC that is ONLY used for web and word processing, the 2400 is fine. As soon as you say "light gaming" you have gone beyond the capabilities of that system.

I know two people who have fallen for that deal (if only they'd talked to me FIRST!), and both severely regret it.

Well, he said under 600, not "as far under 600 as possible", eh? Though agreed, the average user can get away with 256 easily, and would save him 40 bucks on most of these configurations.

Do you really think the average non-[H] person would appreciate Lindows or Linux?
