1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing?
Photoshop and some light gaming
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
$800 inclusive, but less is better
3) Where do you live?
California, near a Fry's
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc.
CPU, GPU, Motherboard, RAM, Case, Power Supply
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
Optical Drive, Hard Drive, Monitor, all peripherals
6) Will you be overclocking?
Considering it but not "hardcore" o/c'ing
7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?
1680 x 1050
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
Within the next month
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? etc.
No specific features, just stability.
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If so, what OS? 32bit or 64bit?
Yes, will have a student copy of Windows 7 64-bit.

This build is for my friend who is studying design so he will be using Photoshop and Illustrator heavily. He also plays games once in a while but as the resolution is not particularly high, I think a 5770 is more than enough for everything he'll play. He also lives like 5 minutes from a Fry's so I'll be keeping a lookout for their CPU and Mobo deals but today there wasn't anything too good. He doesn't have experience overclocking so this rig will likely be stock or o/c'd only with stock cooling.

Please give me suggestions, thanks!

I recommend this setup:
$200 - AMD Phenom II X6 1055T CPU
$90 - Gigabyte GA-880GM-UD2H AMD 880G HDMI mATX Motherboard
$110 - Corsair CMX4GX3M2A1600C9 XMS3 DHX 2x2GB DDR3 1600 RAM
$175 - XFX HD-577A-ZNFC Radeon HD 5770 1GB PCI-E Video Card
$90 - Corsair 650TX 650W PSU
$70 - Cooler Master RC-590-KKN1-GP ATX Case

Total: $735 shipped

Use Amazon.com since they don't charge tax for CA residents and usually have free shipping on most of their parts.

If you can afford to, buy a second DDR3 dual channel kit and use a RamDisk program to turn that kit into a super-fast swap file for Photoshop and Illustrator. (Search for "ramdisk" using the advanced search feature here and look for posts written by "enginurd.")

If your friend is really considering overclocking, get the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus... when it's more available and costs under $35 at other places.
