Build help: Small + Silent + 4k

It doesn't help planning this far in advance. With computer hardware, pricing and availability can change in as little as a week. As such, any build you come up now will more than likely be a poor choice for the money two months from now.. So please come back when you're 1-2 weeks away from buying the parts and ask for advice then.

Forget about ITX and 4k gaming, you need at least a mATX case if you want this reasonably quiet.

Silence is impossible for your requirements. I would get a Strix gtx 970 or something with 3 fans like the Gigabyte Windforce and tune up the fan curve to your needs. Replace case fan with noiseblocker or noctua, and use gentle typhoons if you go for a 2x120mm AIO cooler. Also pick up some gelid gc extreme for paste

Yeah, you can't do a silent 4k-capable gaming system in Ncase unless you use waterocoling. See here:

You can build a quiet watercooled system, but finding a low noise pump is crucial.

I don't think it's worth all that damn trouble just to have something the size of an NCase. You can get a competent silent case with the Node 304 (or if you want to go larger, the Bitfenix Prodigy) that actually has some air moving chops.

Copy the SPCR build?

I didn't just link it to flag the video card cooling issue with you. That build is only 6 months old, using Haswell, and right now those ares are on markdown thanks to the "gotta have Skylake NOW OR I WILL DIEEEE!" people :D

You'll probably have to settle for a smaller,s powerful video card like the GTX 750 Ti. Since the NCase is a very compact chassis, and not widely reviewed, you're probably going to have to do some research before you buy a video card.

You can just build it and use the integrated video for now, and then once the build is complete, you can start a simple upgrade your video card thread here. You can take measurements of EXACTLY how much space you have, and provide pictures, and we can make suggestions.

But you can buy everything else in that build, jsut skip over the watercooler and the video card. That total is under $1000:

Some people here might have other suggestions for SSDs, but everything else should be about the same price.

Or you can buy a case that I know my way around in, like the Node 304, and I can walk you through every little step :D

I can give you plenty of small video card recommendatiions, but I don't knwo how much clearance you have in a complex case like that. Not even after SPCRs review did I know my way around it :D

I will grant that the performance per watt of skylake is much higher than Haswell:

http://www.silentpcreview.com/article1473-page6.html

But unless you're planning to load the system constantly, you're not goign to notice the difference (you'll have to move slightly more air to make up the 15w power difference). You could get a similar power reduction by buying an S-series Haswell processor.

The reality is that all modern Intel and AMD processors on the mainstream platform have about the same idle power, so don't buy Skylake just to reduce that. 5w is lost in the noise!

Memory: you can get a single 8GB stick, or max out your ram with two sticks. Doing something smaller like 4x2 would be foolish, when you only have two slots, and memory is so cheap!

You'll have more motherboard selection if you go Haswell (for the moment).

Right now there are four Skylake motherboards, all outrageously overpriced:

Butt you have more affordable options with Haswell:

The 500w PSU model will be more than enough power. I guarantee you'll never be able to move more than 350w out of that case.

This review from an [H] member said the clicking fro the 500w version is much less noticable than the 600w version!
