1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Mainly for Coding (Cuda - GPGPU & C++ ) and Video editing (1080p)
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
Around £800, No tax and shipping not inculded
3) Where do you live?

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. Please be very specific.
  • CPU - i7 / i5 Is there a massive diff in processing power?,
  • CPU Cooler - Noctua NH-U12P SE cooler
  • Motherboard - ASUS P6T SE iX58 Socket 1366 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard
  • Ram - OCZ 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 1333MHz/PC3-10666 Platinum XTC Triple Channel Memory Kit CL7 1.65V,
  • GFX Card - Inno3D GTS250 Overclock Edition 512MB DDR3 Dual DVI HDTV Out x2 or a single Radeon HD 5850,
  • HDD (Kingston 40gb ssd & WD Black x2 (640/750gb), stripe),
  • Case - The Cavalier case currently in use by the other half, has a old dfi lanparty 939 setup in it, so i was thinking that i could by a cheap case for that setup and reuse the case, with a decent power supply? Would like to keep it quite.
  • PSU - Coolermaster Silent Pro 500W Modular PSU
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.

Everything looks good. GPU may be overkill. What do you plan on doing with CUDA? If nothing really intensive, you can drop it down to the GT240 or even lower if you want.

Thanks for the info. Reading the article is making me think of getting a Lynnfield processor as both the motherboard & cpu will be cheaper, the processor gives the same performance of a i7 920 if not more. The only thing, is that the L1366 is a little more future proof, in that the 6 core gulftowns will be coming out next year, will be L1366.

So now I'm a little unsure.... Is it worth spending that bit more now, as it looks like the L1156 is not going to get the bigger processors next year....

Although I'm getting a Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD4P for around £140, I'm not sure how this compares to the Asus 6T SE.

As far as CUDA goes, I'm just learning about it at the moment but I intend to use it pretty seriously, so I'll probably get a single GTS250 rather than 2 save me some money.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.:confused:

if you want to do CUDA/GPGPU, why are you even considering an AMD graphics card?

your config is fine, except I don't like CM PSUs (just never really had a solid rep IME), can you get a Corsair, Seasonic, PC Power, or Antec unit in your location?

like eng said, if you're just using the nVidia hardware to run CUDA, a GT240 or something (older series like GeForce 9 or 8) would work as well, but if you want to game as well, GTS 250 isn't a bad all-rounder in that respect

processor socket wise, do you really think you'll be upgrading in a year? if yes, then get LGA 1366 and the i7, if not, LGA 1156 is fine, but you are correct, it likely is a dead-end (I look at it as Intel's "Socket 754"....*sigh*)

I cannot say hand on heart that I will upgrade next year, however it would be good to have the ability to do so, the last system I built was a socket 939 only for AMD to change to AM2, boy that annoyed me :mad:
So I think I'll go for the system I spec'd with a change in psu and just 1 gfx card.

Antec EarthWatts 500W, Corsair 450W VX Series, there's about £5 diff between the two the Antec being the more expensive, is the Antec worth it?

I'd go with the Corsair if its only that small of a price difference. The Seasonic built Corsair is a bit better than the Antec.

to the OP:
you can't really predict how long a platform will last, at least not presently, because various manufacturers seem obsessed with "lets change sockets every 6-12 months" to push more hardware (its all about keeping that consumer on a treadmill of obsolescence and sucking 'em dry, after all)

1366 is *likely* to outlast 1156, but they could just as well release a new chipset series or similar that outmodes existing 1366 hardware for the new procs (just like C2Q's can't run on early era LGA 775 hardware, even though it was billed as future proof ;))

nothing wrong with going 1366 though (I'm not arguing in favor of 1156 at all, because its a perfect example of that treadmill), just keep that in mind

Stick with the EarthWatts 500W, it's a often reviewed design that has gotten good remarks, the corsair too, but the EarthWatts is rated for higher power. Having the extra wattage margin wouldn't hurt.

Does that "x2" in there mean your considering dual GT250's, in SLI? If so I'd look at more power supply. 650-700W range.

It did however I realised the they p6t se doesn't handle sli so i just ordered 1, however i have managed to get a cheap p6t deluxe v2. I dobt that I will go sli (not a big gaming fan), if do then I'll just have to buy another power supply :(

No need for SLI when gaming on a 22" monitor at 1680x1050, so no need for another PSU, since you don't play games much. Personally, I like the Corsair better, since its nicely sleeved.
