I've had my current build for about a year and a half and would like to upgrade a few things. Here's what I would like to buy:

Intel Core i7-920 Bloomfield 2.66GHz $289

GeForce GTX 280 1GB 512-bit $254

$1246

My case is a Thermaltake Soprano. I am primarily a gamer. The ssd in my list would be purely for the OS, I have three other hd's that I'd use for storage.

for 22" you don't need a GTX 280. GTX 260 or 4870/5770 would handle your needs better.

That motherboard is incompatible with the processor. The sockets differ. What you want is an X58-based motherboard.

Far too soon to start planning a build. By February, a good majority of any part recommended will either be out of stock, outperformed, overpriced, or outdated. I'd recommend start planning in late January.

Second, why are you going with a 32bit OS when you're getting 6GB of RAM? Speaking of the OS, do you actually need all of the feature so Windows 7 Pro?

Third, as dotCapone pointed out, that motherboard issokcet LGA1156. You need a mobo with socket LGA 1366.

thanx for the info guys, i'll wait till late january to start ordering. Would a GTX 280 be good for a 24" monitor? Are you guys ok with this mobo?

MSI X58 Eclipse SLI LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard

The main thing i'm looking for is SLI capability, do you guys expect the mobo scene to change that much in two months? I'll definitely begoing 64bit on the OS.

A GTX 280 would be enough for a 24" monitor. However, as lt_shiro noted, by that time, the HD 5850 should be in stock and pretty close to its MSRP of $260. At that time, the HD 5850 would be a better buy since it's slightly faster than the GTX 280, uses less power, offers DX11, and Eyefinity support.

Mobo wise, more than likely we'll start seeing more and more mobos with SATA 6.0GB/s and USB 3.0 support around that time.

What are you hoping to accomplish with this upgrade?

What specific performance improvement are you looking for?

I want to beable to play any game coming out at the highest settings and be pretty efficient at video encoding. One game i want to play requires directx 11.

thanx again for all your time and info guys.
