I am soon going to be starting to build a new computer. This is my first attempt at building one myself and am looking to build it for around the 1000-1200 price range. I will mainly just use it for gaming and have a few parts in mind.

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600

ABIT IP35 Pro LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813127030

A-DATA 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211066

EVGA 640-P2-N824-AR GeForce 8800GTS 640MB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130327

If someone could show me parts that would be good to combine with these to complete the computer it would be greatly appreciated. Also, any comments on the chosen parts and suggestions would be nice.

get a Geforce 8800GTS 512MB instead of that old 640MB GTS

+1 to leSLIe post. the 640mb version is old now and you can get a better video card at that price such as the 8800gts g92 512mb which replaced the 320mb/640mb versions and the 8800gt 512mb.

because its so cheap and not that more expensive, you should get the $70 ($50 AR)- A-DATA 4GB(2 x 2GB). and get a 64bit OS.

I would recommend the:
$85 ($65 AR)- corsair 550vx power supply
$100 ($90 AR)- corsair 520hx (modular) power supply
*note you get a $10 discount if you do google checkout

case is dependent on your likings so thats really up to you. some of the common favorites midtower wise is the coolermaster 690, antec 180,180b,182.

will you be overclocking? if so i would recommend the $50 ($40 AR)- zerotherm nirvana nv120

FYI: Newegg's running a combo on Vista Home Premium or Ultimate with that Q6600

+1 on the EVGA 8800GTS 512 I stepped up from a 8800GTS 640 to a 512 and the difference was noticeable (not mind blowing or even significant, but you could definitely tell)

Off topic, but.. I am a girl too ;)

the OP may not have asked to critique the parts, but as geeks :p, it's our duty to give our recommendation when there is other hardware out that is better at the same or near the price, which would be the 8800gt 512mb and the 8800gts g92 512mb.

I'm pretty sure Syribo was referring to Leslies forum sig. :p

LOL :D

I agree with what was mentioned earlier. Definitely get an 8800GTS 512 over that 8800GTS 640MB. You can get this MSI NX8800GT for a cheaper price and it will beat that EVGA 8800GTS 640MB.

Thank you for everyones input and suggestions. I think I'll be going with the list in HardwareGuru's post. If there is anything else essential that I'm forgetting or missing don't hesitate to remind me :).

Get the VX450 from Buy.com. Even without the rebate, you'll save $10 due to Buy.com offering free shipping on the Corsair power supplies.

For $15 more, you could buy the VX550, which is a much better power supply. (It has a $20 MIR, but it expires today.)

The mobo just went out of stock at newegg. Does anyone know of another place to get it for about the same price, or how long it usually takes for them to get it back in stock?

mwave.com, clubit.com, zipzoomfly.com... need i go on?

not like i checked prices or stock, but rather just listed places for you to check, lol.

More and more people are having problems with their Abit IP35 Pro. Plus Abit's support is the absolute worse. So hope you don't have to RMA.

BTW - I haven't had any problems (yet !) with my Abit IP35 Pro.

So I just went to a local place to see if I could find any good deals on parts and the guy said if he was going to run this system he wouldn't go below a 650 watt power supply, and 500 watts I would be lucky to get 6 months out of. I'm pretty sure he was just trying to rip me off because everyone else I talked to said that round the 500's should be fine. Just want to double check though before I order the parts sometime tonight.

Man that guy definitely doesn't know what he talking about. He is just basing the PS on just watts alone. What's the point of getting a 650 watt PS if the +12v amperage is lower than a 500 watt PS with a higher +12V amperage. Those guys at local places most of them they don't know or they are clueless. When I swing a technical question towards them they get quiet and they walk over to someone else to see if the other person can help. BTW, get some guys on here running 2 x 8800GTX SLI on a Corsair HX520 520 watt and their system runs fine. For your setup, even an Antec Earthwatts 380 watt with 27 amps on the +12v will be fine.

He must be thinking of some shitty quality PSUs. 500W would be fine for that rig, even if you OC'd the CPU to 3.6Ghz w/ 1.5v (if so, it should pull around 400W). So, you'll need at least 30A on the +12V rail(s) if you want to reach such an OC, and all the PSUs listed for you by HardwareGuru fit that requirement. Without OC, that rig should pull less than 330W (so at least 25A on the +12V rail(s) would be needed).

Ok, so far the mobo is out of stock at newegg, clubit, and zipzoomfly. If anyone knows of any place where it is in stock I would really appreciate it. I'm wanting to assemble this while I'm still on spring break, but after this week it's over.

It just came back in stock on newegg and I ordered all of the parts. Thank you all for your help.
