Hello [H]ard!

I’m planning on building a new system in a couple of weeks’ time, so I thought I’d run my plans past you and see what you thought.

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? Etc
Gaming, Photo editing in Adobe Lightroom, and general computer use.

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
As near as possible to £1000, with an upper limit of £1050. Buying online from wherever is cheapest (and reputable). If you’re interested, look at UK prices on Amazon.co.uk, scan.co.uk and overclockers.co.uk as a guide. Shipping is included in the budget.

3) Which country do you live in?
United Kingdom

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget?
I need: Case, Motherboard, CPU, CPU cooler, RAM, GPU, SSD, and PSU.

5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing?
I will be reusing a 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F3 HDD.

6) Will you be overclocking?
I have never overclocked before, so I view it with a little trepidation. However, I understand that these days it’s not too complicated, so I expect to perform a mild overclock on my CPU; maybe to 4.2Ghz or so. I’m unlikely to tackle my RAM or GPU.

7) What is the max resolution of your monitor? What size is it?
I will be using a 24" 1920x1200 main monitor, and probably a 19" 1280x1024 as a secondary.

8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
I plan on buying the components at the end of this month.

9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? eSATA? Onboard video (as a backup or main GPU)? UEFI? etc.
USB 3.0 and SATA 6Gb/s.

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit?
No. I will need to include a 64bit copy of Windows 8 OEM.

Keeping the system quiet is quite important to me. I’m relatively decided on the following components:

CPU: i5 3570k (£172)
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H (£113)
GPU: Asus 2GB GTX670 DirectCU II (£315)
Case: Fractal Design R4 (£80)
SSD: Samsung 840 250GB (£125)
OS: Windows 8 64-bit OEM (£70)

The above currently comes to £875 on Amazon, which appears to be the cheapest source at the moment. That leaves me with a maximum of £175 to buy the remaining components, which are listed below with my current thoughts.

PSU: Seasonic G 550w (if I can find it for less than £80). I would like semi-modular or modular, and at least 80Plus Bronze. (£75)
RAM: 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz (whatever’s cheapest from a reliable brand on the day of purchase). I don’t think I need 16GB. (£40)
CPU cooler: Arctic Cooling Freezer i30. As above, I’ll be performing a mild overclock, and quietness is important. (£30)

So, with all my rounded prices above, I’m looking at about £1020, which is spot on.

Now comes the scary part: what would you change?

I look forward to your comments

I would swap out the motherboard for the ASUS P8Z77-V LK since the UD3H is a tad quirky. I would also swap out the HSF for the Coolermaster Hyper 212 plus. As for the RAM, Just make sure that it is rated at 1.5V and you will be set.

Other than that, looks good to me.

I would get a HD 7950 3Gb instead a gtx670 and save at least £80.00, a 650W PSU instead a 550W, another Motherboard and probably another cooler.

He won't need 650W of power since he not mentioned any plans for Crossfire or SLI.

Ok - I'll look into the 7950 3GB. Can you explain why you recommend that (other than the price)?

Everything I've read suggests that for a single GPU set up a 550W PSU will suffice, but if I come across a decent offer on a 650W then I'll consider it.

As for motherboard and cooler - any recommendations?

Danny Bui suggested the ASUS P8Z77-V LK & Coolermaster Hyper 212 plus. :) He's very knowledgeable & has helped me with some of my builds & they've been great. :)
