OK, due to recent ... lack of funds.... (1700$ in folding gear lol, got carried away)... I need some shelves for my rack, but I am pretty much out of money to spend on getting them

So, does anyone know if you can make them from wood? I'm no expert, but Ive been doing construction, remodeling, and framing on and off for 6 years now, and I've pretty much done 2 houses solo now, so I'm no noob

Post any ideas, sketches, random things you might think about building some (yes, they will be painted so they dont look TOOO red-neck ish
 
yeah you can make them out of wood.. its not an issue.. cant remember who it is in here.. but hes got a complete open air i7 rig mounted to a 2 inch piece of plywood sitting right infront of his window.. he just screwed the motherboard mounts into the piece of wood and then mounted the board to that..

wood doesnt conduct electricity so it wont be an issue when it comes to grounding..

the question will be how much weight you plan to put on these shelves would determine how much wood and how expensive it would be.. but you could easily do it out of 1-2 inch plywood with 3 2x2's on each side and 1 in the back to support the selves..

This may help you, but you might be wanting something stronger. My folding setup is really light, I think my heatsinks are the two heaviest items, so... (no this is NOT what you requested)

You know, the inner mounted rack I have is still available.
Also, I have a few extra outside mounted 'trays'.

When I ran out of rackspace last year, a cheap (and self reinforced) IKEA bookshelf was taken to do the trick (at work, but I paid for it :()

Watch out for any little bits of wood that may cause some issues. It's more pertinent when you are adding metal straps to reinforce stuff (metal = bad little fillings).

you dont need metal straps to hold anything.. all you need is screws to screw in the supports to the shelves.. as long as you use something to blow off the shelves after putting the motherboard mounts into each shelf then you wont have a problem with little bits of wood..

yeah thats one bad ass setup.. i always wanted to copy it to use with one of my other rigs but just never got around to doing it..
 
My next setup will be in a 6' tall 19" cabinet that used to house an 1KW radio transmitter I built a long time ago. The cabinet is circa 1965 and I don't recall where I got it. I also have a similar cabinet that is 4' tall and is on casters. I mounted some shelves in my big cabinet today. Sorry Vaulter, none of this probably helps you much but I love a good rack. :D

When I get a free day (pulling 4 back to back shifts tonight, 2 army, 2 civilian, too bad uncle sam doesnt pay OT) I'll swing by Lowes and check out some brackets, I should have some 1" back at the old house

Heheh, that was about 2 years ago. We where putting together headless SMP boxen as fast as we could.

I could spend $40 on a case, or get a better CPU. Wasn't too hard of a choice.

The only box that is still together is the "file server". It is over at the neighbors as their main rig.... that happens to fold and leaches off my Wifi :D

Besides that, I'm not sure I still own 1/2 those parts in the pic.
 
If you hop on over to the DC FS/FT subforum and check my thread you can see that my box is resting on a piece of plywood that is sitting on a metal rack shelf.

I even drilled pilot holes in the plywood for standoffs!!:D
 
i found some nice prices at a local military surplus place near my home for racks. i have also found public auctions useful for furniture, shelving and even cables of all sorts.being a musician i also have rack mount performance and studio gear so i have added incentive to find it on the cheap....i jam econo :D

for my building supplies, i have no problem stopping by a construction site and asking if they have any scrap(s) that they would not mind my sorting through and having. plywood and 2x4's are easy finds. even did a hdd upgrade once for 4 sheets of 1/2" ply and a dozen 2x4's

my 2 cents....may not be your style or cup o'tea

i know you said you dont have funds, but racks for 200 and Shelving like this for 150 i found at surplus, the oil companies and universities are also good for used lab/office stuff too. as i said i also have a home studio for recording. this is how i find most of my stuff for it and my various projects.

lol, i would be skeer'd to ask. chances are there is a place like that near you though. my only problem is i go there, and walk around looking. i end up finding something and figure out something i can use it for almost as much as i go there to just get something i already have need of :eek:
 
That last ones got me interested, was actually thinking about trying something so ilar to that. But wood with almi um sides instead

Ref Kendrak's picture - those 4 shelf plastic units are $25 at Lowes / Home Depot

Red My Link /photos - The night stand is $40 at wallmart & the Ikea Bookshelf is around $50.

All great solutions for a rack that looks great.

(You can always put some 80mm fans on the back of the bookshelf - and have some good airflow - one from each board)
 
I got me one of these.

So far I really like it. I'm waiting on some parts to finish it up the build, but I'm digging the near nekkid aspects of it. I wish I would have picked up 2 at the Xoxcide going out of biz sale.
 
I don't want to buy a new rack unless I have to, I've got a purty rack just waiting for some love. Right now I'm more worried about some stable rigs, my main folder is down and I can't get the 4 gx2 rig up, I'm at 1000ppd today :(
