I am looking to build a personal cloud for my home. Nothing fancy, just something with enough power to handle multiple connections for downloading video, music, photos and video streaming, music streaming, etc. I prefer a system that has an integrated UI (mobile app is a plus as well). Finally, it will handle backups of two laptop systems as well

I would like to stay around $150, but would go up to $200 if it is worth it. Obviously, anything less than $150 that will do the trick is also welcome
 
That Synology DS212j is probably the second cheapest NAS I'd recommend to anyone. The cheapest NAS I'd recommend is the single drive version of the NAS you linked:

But honestly, I'd spend the extra $50 for the extra storage capability and possible redundancy feature (i.e RAID 1) of the DS212j. I've actually used the DS212j and the UI is just fantastic. It's simple to use and setup.

Thanks Danny. I will go with the DS212j. Do you have any recommendation for disk speed for my needs? Would 5400rpm cut it?

Speed is not a big factor as most modern disks can saturate a 1Gbps nic alone. Everyone has a preference in regards to what disk they like but I like to choose disks based on good reviews, price and warranty.

Well how much storage do you want? 5400RPM would cut it but I tend to go with 7200RPM just in case.
