Budget: e7200 vs. e8400 vs. x2 6000+

Hey, everyone, thanks in advance for any help you can offer. I'm going to spend ~$200 in the next few days (less is better) on new cpu/motherboard/RAM. I really want a good feel for price/performance before I bite since this is a hold-me-over for a major build later on, but I will be using it for 6-9 months.

Uses: Gaming and occassional rendering (I guess I could get a q6600 too, but I figure the e8400 would be plenty fast enough and the speed in gaming would more than make up for the speed in rendering).

x2 6000+ for $76. I'd really not considered this route but if I can pick up a cheap am3/am2 motherboard it might just save me some money in the future if the phenom IIs turn out not to suck.

Another option is e5200 clock 2.5 GHz, 800 MHZ FBS, 2 MB... It overclocks too 3.5 GHz with easy. But since you are rendering a Quad core would be better.
 
Honestly man dual cores are fine. I work for 2-3 weeks before I even render, most of which I can do over a few nights. A good oc/price on a dual core would probably be better since this is just a temporary system anyway. Thanks for the suggestion.
 
E5200 is the best bang for the buck right now. $83 at newegg w free shipping

That price on the E7200 is terrible. Microcenter has the E7300 for $105 every day (and the E7200 for $100 but it seems to go out of stock a lot). Also, the e8400 is $150 there. If you are buying from newegg, with your conditions, get the E5200
 
If I want to update to newer duo core, from a old E6400, am I better off with the E7xxx serie or the E8x00 serie for the best bang for the buck.
 
Depends on your motherboard. If you are using an old p965/p975 chipsets. Q6600 is better value to you...
 
I have a version 2 and can support the newer wolfdale processor with overclock. The E8x00 serie seem to be faster than Q6600 but it is dual core.
 
Actually I'm going to wait till tomorrow and go down to Frys and pick up a cpu/motherboard combo, supposedly they're going to have q6600s with motherboard for $150 which would be sweet. Then, I'll probably end up waiting till mid-January to get my RAM since I'm in line to win cevo-a in TF2. :) Yeah, I'm that cheap.

Good choice. Fry's always has steals on combo deals. Nothing wrong with being cheap, I'm cheap too. Just be aware you're likely to get a worthless ecs mobo
