I am having difficulty installing Windows XP 64 Bit to my custom PC, Always getting BSOD.

My PC Specs

Asus Extreme VI Maximus
4770k
1 SSD
1 2TB WD HD
32GB Ram(4x8GB)

Disc

Windows XP Professional x64 Edition
June 2006
Systems
Student Media / Work At Home Media

After entering the disc from boot, I get a normal blue screen with some of the text below.

Windows Setup

At the bottom I see progress such as

  • ...
  • Setup is loading files (Video Card)
  • ...
  • ...
  • Setup is loading files (FAT FILE SYSTEM)...
  • ...
  • Setup is starting Windows

It is always after Setup is starting Windows that the BSOD as follows appears.

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

Technical information: ***STOP: 0x0000007B,(0xFFFFFADE5DE5D8323C0,0xFFFFFFFFC0000034,0x0000000000000000,0x0000000000000000)

Some things I have tried to fix this

  • - I have tried unplugging the SSD
  • - Unplugging the HD
  • - Removing 3 of the ram sticks leaving 1 8GB
  • - Removing 2 of the ram sticks leaving 2 8GB
  • - Putting the ram in different slots
  • - Moving the HD/SSD and CD drive to different SATA ports
  • - Removing the Overclock settings on my motherboard.
  • - Secure boot is off.

Any thoughts on this?

Go here.
Select WinXP 64 bit
Notice there are no drivers available to download.
Stop using a 14+ year old OS that is no longer supported by any new hardware.
Throw in a Win7 or Win8 install disk and notice installation proceeds with no problems.

***STOP: 0x0000007B means You do not have drivers for your storage. Maybe you have to disable AHCI and use IDE emulation for your SATA controller.

I believe XP 64 is 11 years old. It was created for AMDs x68_64 processors that were introduced in 2003.

This is another good reference for that board.
Note under Operating System Support, WinXP isn't anywhere.
And before you say "but Linux", good luck getting kernel 2.4 to load on that thing.

It shows 32 files on that page you sent me.

The reason I wanted to use XP was because Vista and 8 are hopeless...

Is xp 64 bit out of the question completly?

All manuals and BIOS files, no drivers, Check the Win7 64-bit page, there's 102 files with headings like "AUDIO" and "VGA" and even "SATA".

Win XP 64-bit has always been horribly supported, you will not have a good time trying to get anything to run on it ever, even when it was "supported". Nobody said anything about Vista, it's not even on the supported list either. You have 2 real choices, Win 7 and Win 8.1. It would be far less trouble to pull your head out of the sand and just learn 8.1 (cause frankly it has a lot of good under the hood improvements, just get one of those start menu replacements, done) than it would to get the unsupported pile of crap that was 64-bit XP working.

8 might have a goofy ui but the os's underpinnings are really good, anything but hopeless

You know they had one between Vista and 8 that people kinda like, right?

Sometimes the help given here is not technical. It's logical. Be logical and just install Windows 7 x64, or, try Windows 8.1 x64.

Yes I might try 7, just I would rather try to get this working as I only just brought it.

Again try ide mode on the SATA controller instead of RAID or AHCI.

Tried IDE but the BSOD msg is exactly the same.

Would Secureboot being off have anything to do with it? Or the UEFI/Legacy mode setting?

Intel doesn't even make WinXP of any kind compatible drivers for the X87 chipset. You'd be up and running and realized by now that Win8 isn't as hopeless as the propaganda you've heard by now if you'd started with it, you'd be up and running with Win7 and actually doing stuff if you'd started with that.

List one good reason you want to stick with an OS that launched when Clinton was still in office, and "I don't have to worry about rebooting the first Tuesday of the month any more" doesn't count.

Well then good luck getting your dated, unsecure, inefficient, and obviously unsupported OS working.

Good stuff, good stuff.

64bit XP 10/10 would read again.

I don't have to worry about rebooting the first Tuesday of the month any more

Seriously, stop dicking around with an OS that was barely supported in the first place. Hell Vista 64 would probably have been better.

Get a copy of 7 or 8.1 and call it a day. 8.1 isn't that bad at all, and even 8 isn't as bad as everyone was saying.

If I can train VPs and Sr Directors to use Win 8 you shouldn't have any trouble figuring it out.

0x0000007B is drive access error, try IDE mode instead of AHCI, or possibly if you can somehow find raid drivers by chance

Like others have said, stop wasting your time trying to get XP x64 to work. Even if you did manage to get it installed, that's only the beginning of your woes, as most software won't work properly on it either.

Unless, of course, you enjoy things like running full speed into brick walls or water-boarding yourself, in which case, carry on. ;)

Why would you want kernel 2.4 to load when it's already moved on to 3.18?

XP64 is on Server 2003's update schedule (as they share the same underlying kernel).

I don't know when the last updates for Server 2003 were, but seeing as it's on MS's list of to-be-EOL'd software, then yes, you won't have to worry about rebooting for patches, since there won't BE any more patches.

You just bought xp 64 bit?
Looks like you are facing comparability issues, not much if anything is going to be win xp 64 bit compatible.

I used XP 64 bit before windows 7 came out. That was 5 years ago. It was a pain in the dick then. I would recommend moving on to a more modern operating system.

At work I used XP64 for 5+ years in c++ development boxes (for medical imaging) and medical imaging workstations. No problems at all using it for these tasks even in the early days. Although our hardware was pretty basic. No sound cards.. nVidia GPUs..

I used XP64 as my main gaming rig OS through most of 2007, and it was fine for the time. It's not fine for 2014. Win7 is simply better in every conceivable way, and as I'm not a Win8-hater, I find 8.1 to be pleasantly usable for both gaming and productivity. But hey that's me.

Why in God's name would you even want to try and put XP on that?? That's just dumb.
