Bought a 2.4 P4 on the forum....arrived with a 4 or 5 bent pins and one missing.....fixed the bent pins with a tool I made but the missing one is a problem. I've heard of a service out there that will repair pins.......anyone know who or where they are?
If it is affordable......figured I'd guve it a shot before doing it my self......as I don't have a supply of .012 gold wire laying around.......figured out the procedure I think......just no materiels.

I would like to know this service as well as I have needed it before in the past...

Man fixing a tiny pin on a 478 chip sounds frustrating as hell.
 
Thanks...I'll book mark that'un....but with the help of my jeweler bud who supplied some 14k gold wire of the proper diameter.....28 guage.......I soldered that puppy myself and have it up and running.
 
first see if that pin is even needed, out of 478 pins a good deal of them are nothing but keying that have no termination on the board!

A "good deal" of them? Like, what percentage?

According to the data sheet, they're all used. Eight are marked "RESERVED", but even assuming those signals really aren't used, the odds that it is a reserved pin which has broken are pretty low ... about 1 in 60.

If it is one of the many power or ground pins, it might work without it..

"For clean on-chip power distribution, the Pentium 4 processor in the 478-pin package has
85 VCC (power) and 181 VSS (ground) inputs."

It would increase electromigration in other parts of the CPU (as the power for the parts of the chip normally served by the missing pin would have to draw through the chip itself) but it might still work.

It seems iffy. I don't think these pins are fully redundant because it's very hard to route bus bars around the whole chip.

Meanwhile, I don't think this is what ScHpAnKy was talking about. I'm positive that all of these pins, however redundant they might be, have "termination on the board".

True that is why I said might. I had a power pin on a old P166 break and it still worked, but that means little when we are talking about a current processor.

Have you tried to use it yet? I bought a Socket 478 1.7ghz Celeron of off ebay about 2 years ago. I got it dirt cheap cause it was missing 2 pins. Its been running great for the entire time since I got it with the 2 pins missing. Unless you happened to get a critical pin, you should be OK.
 
can anyone download the Xeon mPGA604 datasheet? i have an xeon with a broken pin and i wanna see if itll work anyway... the PDF wont download for me for some reason
 
I have no experience with this, but it is good to know as I have almost broken off a pin or two as well....
 
Guys...I have been approched by a lot of people to repair their processors...and have done quite a few sucessfully..........but I want everyone to understand before you contact me.....I cant test if I don't have a system......and I'm not going to test before soldering even if I have a system as I am not going to deal with "you fried my cpu' claims.If you send to me....it is at your risk.......just did one that the user plugged in that didn't work....that I also had to straighten 20+ pins to be able to repair it.........and broke the soldered pins on removal. I'm going to solder the pins back on at no charge.....but refunds are not an option. I want anyone contacting me to understand...I check each repair by suspending the weight of the processor from the wire after soldering. All I guarantee is the wire/pin to be soldered......and usable if handled gently. Other than that.....it is your call if you want to send it to me.If it is a P4 478 I'll post it in a system....but no guarantees.
 
Try a Jeweller... I have heard a couple of stories about them being able to fix CPU's. I guess it makes sense, they do work with metal all day:)
