Just FYI, if you commit a crime in the UK, there is no PS3s in jail. I had no idea that this even had to be taken into consideration. What about an Xbox 360? Wii? Dang, jail just isn't fun any more!

Home Secretary John Reid has made clear that Sony's latest console simply won't be allowed within UK jails, as its ability to "send and receive radio signals" lends itself to becoming an illegal communication device with the "outside world."

Poor criminals.

Remind how this world got to treating criminals to better lifestyles than many low-income families?

what the hell?

how can ANYONE EVER be reformed without being able to lounge around in their cell all day and play PS3?!

The humanity!

A friend of mine is a corrections officer on RIkers, and he knows a few "homeless" guys who commited crimes JUST to go to prison so theyd have food and a place to stay.

sad indeed.

This is a joke. The european prisons are resorts for those unable to afford a roof over their head.

I saw an Xbox in a Burger King once.

Er, I've never been inside a prison, and you won't fine me voluntarily researching their offerings to inmates, but when there's a widespread problem with homeless people commiting crimes just to be imprisoned, you know there's a problem.

Why do they sterilize before lethal injection? Maybe that's where we should start.

Parents tend not to want their kids spending all day "rotting their brains" with video games. Why should inmates? Get them into classes, bettering themselves, not their game scores. :p

Would be pretty interesting playing some multiplayer game and an inmate suddenly chimes in over your headset. :D

15 year old on Xbox Live: "OMFG that was so gay if u were near me irl id kick ur ass, spawn camping noob"
Inmate: "I'll take you up on that offer after my parole hearing."

Haha thanks for the laugh..

Hmm, damn, and here I was thinking that I could get into prison so I could play Oblivion on the PS3 for the rest of my days!

I guess I had better hide these bodies now..... :p

HAHAHA

What're prisons gonna do when video gaming is played through devices implanted into our brains?

:p :D

I am not sure about consoles, but inmates here in the U.S. often get TVs and VCRs (maybe DVD players now). The reason is that it is less expensive to buy a 13 inch TV to keep the inmates in line than to hire another guard to watch over them. Entertained inmates are less likely to get board and do… well… the bad stuff that inmates do.

Instead of trying to entertain our inmates, maybe we should simply reduce their numbers? Non-violent drug offenders DO NOT belong in prison! After all, that is why we had to construct an extremely expensive industrial prison complex in America that houses over 2.2 Million people.
Hell, we incarcerate a higher percentage of our citizens than China or Russia!

:p :D

They'll force you to walk through full-body Electro-Magnetic-Pulse (EMP) chambers upon admission to the Club Fed :p !

Where do they belong? Out on the streets buying more drugs to overdose on?

They belong on house arrest so they can stalk their murderous neighbors who are also watching them and...I'll tell you the rest if I see the movie. :D

How about in rehab clinics getting treatment?

Or better yet, we can do what Switzerland did. The government gives drugs away for free there. If you are an addict, instead of getting your drugs from dangerous drug dealers for extremely high prices (the druggies often have to rob and steal to afford them), you are supervised by a doctor while you use your drugs in a safe facility. No, you don’t get to take any with you when you leave. This facility also has addiction counselors, career counselors, people to help you get into rehab and get your life together. After four years of the program, drug related robbery was down 98%!! Numerous other drug related crimes also saw dramatic decreases. Even more important, because drug addicts get their drugs from the government for free, drug dealers simply went out of business. What is the point of trying to get people hooked on crack if they will just get it for free from the government once you finally have them addicted?

It is not drugs that cause the problems… it is the prohibition of the drugs that causes the problems. How many people die today from poisonous/poorly made alcohol??? NONE!!! Prohibition doesn’t work.. not for alcohol, not for anything. Instead of calling it the war on drugs, it should be called prohibition 2. That would make more sense.

And, because I know someone is going to ask me this, I am not advocating that we sell hard drugs or legalize them like alcohol.

stonewaldo420 I do agree with you view on the "war on drugs" you should have added that marry jane should be legalized.....if it wasn't for that damn Anslinger in the 50's (i think) it would be.

LOL at the correlation between your drug policy and your username.

(I don't use nor have I tried any drug.......besides alcohol and tobbaco but those aren't drugs....are they )

Rehab has been proven many times to not work efficiently, while it might work on some, the outcome of there being a great impact is very small.

~The idea of giving away free drugs under controlled environments might work, but then again they will also have to be heavily guarded because I would assume many drug addicts would try to rob/steal/etc. to get anything they can.

On the idea of Banning PS3s in prisons, it seems they are worried about inmates communicating with the outside world, but why not just block the wifi access, or just have a tech disable that feature in the PS3. I am sure there is someone who could do that.

~Also, to the guy who said alcohol & tobacco are not drugs, they are by definition, but they are "legal drugs.

Why would anyone steal drugs that are given away for free?

People steal things because they have value. How often do you see people stealing materials from constrution sites? It happens, but it's rare enough that I still see skids of bricks and lumber lying in the open all the time.

I don't forsee many people trying to steal drugs from a clinic that will hand them out for free, especially 24 hour clinics.

Value is a broad word.
We talking re-selling drugs, personal use drugs, etc.

~You asked why would they sell drugs that are being given away?
Probably, especially with the US, they are not going to just give until you pass out, it will probably be a "recommended" amount. Which may not be what you wanted, it could be that you KNOW they store drugs there, steal them & transport to where they can sell them.

Do not under estimate drug users.

You are right about rehab not working for a lot of people. That is what is so important about the Switzerland model. While the hope is to get most users integrated back into mainstream society (and most do eventually stop using), there are some that will simply use drugs for the rest of their lives. These are the people that we end up imprisoning over and over again until they finally get a life sentence. That costs us quite literally millions of dollars per person!!! (well over $30,000 per year for upwards of 50-60 years, plus inflation)

In the Switzerland model, these people are provided a safe supply of drugs (which the government can get at almost NO COST) and a career counselor is able to find them suitable employment. After all, picking oranges is picking oranges, it doesn’t matter if you are whacked out on crack. It is a lot less expensive and less harmful to society to simply provide these users with their drug in a safe environment than to waste BILLIONS of taxpayer dollars imprisoning thousands of them every year.

Furthermore, once non-violent drug users are eliminated from our prisons, you have the space and money to keep the violent criminals locked up for MUCH longer… instead of the current system where we grant early release murders and rapists because we need room for crack dealers.

And about the theft, there is an armed police officer at the clinics as well. However, theft hasn’t been a problem because why would you steal something that you are already getting for free? And even if you did steal it, you couldn’t sell it to anyone. After all, the people who would be interested in buying the crack or heroin from you are already getting it for free from the government!

They do have flexible drug dosage levels. Most users are able to get much higher (while remaining safe) than they would out on the street. The reason is that you know EXACTLY what the purity of the substance is so you are able to shoot up just the right amount to get the desired high. On the street that can be dangerous if you want to live on the edge (slightly more potent batch = overdose).

Do not under estimate drug users.

Don't really have to estimate. If another country does it,. and they don't have a problem with theft, then you most likely won't havea problem here.

Even if people DID try to steal them. You can take the massive number of cops that no longer need to deal with these people and have them guard clinics instead. You'd still save hundreds of millions, or even billions, you'd otherwise spend keeping these people in jail and additionally cause a massive reduction in violent crime experienced by innocent citizens.

"Edit"

Not to mention that you could actually hold some form of employment if you had a regular shootup schedule and your employer doesn't have to wonder if you're gonna bother showing.

You might not be a great employee, but you'd sure as hell be better then nothing. Hell, there are PLENTY of jobs that they'd do in prison that they could do outside. The government can easily afford to pay them minimum wage from the savings on prisons.

Why would they even have a ps3 in the first place lol. I don't even have one and they are in prison and acted bad. Why would they even need that luxery lol.
