Brink, thoughts?

why play brink when you can play TF2? understanding that brink has a single player mode, but it is not playable well with the bots.

Gonna give the free weekend a whirl and see for myself...user opinions seem to be quite polarised.

Well I got eyefinity working via the brinkconfig program but performance is shitty to say the least, with detail on low and shadows on medium im getting under 50 fps at 3240x1920.

i7 920 at 4.0
3x 6970's

Any ideas on tweaks or anything? pretty sure im using 11.6.

After playing it for about 45 minutes I can say that the game is a lot better than I thought. I like how you can freely change class, weapons aren't class related, lots of customization, and the support options actually seem useful. There is some terrible lag that comes from time to time and the respawn system is garbage. If the game were $10 or less I'd buy it.

I recommend everyone at least download this and give a shit, but at least play with FRIENDS that is crucial. It's not meant to be a SP game, there's a slight learning curve but it's actually fun.

Everyone should really try it. Once you get the hang of it, It's pretty fun.

Weapon buff seems to be essential. It takes forever to kill someone without it.

well, just tried it for the first time today with the free steam weekend and all. i was getting a good feel for the game after a couple of hours and i must say, i can see this being a TON of fun with a good group.

however, no one seems to even have mics set up. there is no communication going on what so ever in every game i've joined. what's up wit dat? and yes, i know it's was a thursday night, but i expected more people to be on. really hope some servers fill up this weekend. seeing how the weekend numbers turn up, i may just give in and buyi it as i'm having more fun than i thought i would.

I think whatever chance they had of resurrecting this game after the free weekend promo went out the door when they decided that 50% off was a good enough discount for it.

hmm played for a few hours with a buddy, Its definitely different.. But theres just something about it I dont like, cant really put my finger on it either.. 'Prolly just gonna let this one die..

Maybe it's the same thing I don't like.

The gameplay just doesn't feel satisfying. Making a kill, the gunplay, the mechanics...I just don't like the way it feels.

Is it perhaps the gameplay not being fast enough? The whole being able to revive thing kinda tweaks with me. Not quite as satisfying to get a kill as the old UT2K days.

So it appears that I just bought this with the Quakecon pack ;) I gather from this thread that playing with a group is way better than solo. Are there any [H] groups or anything I can join?

That's pretty much essential. The game HAS to be played with a group of people, would make a great a LAN game.

WTF? Is something broken with my game or what? I d/l'ed the free weekend and am playing the campaign mode, which is online apparently - this is the WORST AI I have EVER seen. EVER. The enemies don't even shoot at me, they just run past me to shoot at my teammates. This is absolutely atrocious, how could they even let this game out for release? I played better bots in Quake 1...

Tried the game for about half an hour. Why does it feel like a slideshow when the frames are pegged at a solid 60. I read about this problem when it was released -- so expected the many months and many patches since that time to have alleviated the weird issue. How can anyone play the game when it feels/looks this way.

best thing about the free weekend is that you did not have to pay for it and you can delete it once done

Tried it, made me glad I didn't buy it.

I like the art direction but level design is just confusing, player movement feels stunted, the weapons lack oomph, its hard to distinguish enemies, killing enemies just doesnt feel satisfying, the vaulting/slide ability seems gimmicky and doesn't contribute to gameplay, and there seems to be a terrible amount of latency in their net code.

I think Brink is a perfect example of why devs have shied away from releasing demos and have become heavily reliant on marketing hype to sell as many pre-order copies as possible before word gets out that their game is a turd.

I recommend giving it a miss. I bought it right when it came out based on the videos/descriptions and that a group of the people I play online with were getting it. We all gave it a real chance, I played for 15 hours or so, and just didn't like it. Good idea, shitty execution.

I can't recommend it to anyone really. I like shooters, love team based shoorters, really love objective based shooters and played TF and TF2 a ton, yet I still don't like it. It is "my kind of game" and it doesn't do it, so I have to say just pass it up.

There's a reason it is doing a free weekend and half price, along with free DLC, so soon after launch: It has been falling flat. People that got it have abandoned it.

Summed up how I felt perfectly. Plus I hate cluttered HUDs; teammate indicators would bleed through enemies if they were standing in front of a teammate so I would hesitate constantly.

I just tried it as well and I can't stand the AI. The online mode works fine with actual players if you manage to find a good team or can make one.

I see so much good intentions with Brink but its just so poorly executed. The story is "eh" the AI is god awful which considering the intense mix of bots in single player they should have been at least "Unreal Tournament" intelligent. The MP is where its at but playing doesn't feel quite like you accomplished much. I don't know why but I feel like even though I dumped 4 hours into this game today since its free this week , that I don't feel compelled to come back and keep progressing.

I am glad I didn't buy this day one , its still got bugs (30 fps in single player equals barf) and its glitchy. This game should have had another 6 months of fixes , balancing and performance improvements. However once it drops to $10 bucks I probably snag it and hope for the best over time.

Yep, this game is shit, horrible console port, outdated graphics and I even think ET:QW is a better game with better graphics. Glad I didn't buy it at launch, and I certainty won't now.

Feels really slow. The fact that enemies won't die properly gets on my nerves. The AI is comically dumb, but obviously its meant to be played online I guess. The plot seems interesting but if I dont beat it this weekend I'm just not gonna care enough to buy it.

Does nobody know how to make a single player campaign anymore?

It's definitely a Poor mans TF2 gameplay wise and thats pretty bad considering TF2 is F2P

Going back to AVA now.

I don't really get the comparison of this with TF2 other than that they both have similar class selections. If anything I think it feels a bit more like BC2 from a damage standpoint, how you interact with objectives, team support elements, and the pacing that games are played at.

The game makes it look like you're going SUPER fast but you're going at such a normal speed. Why does your character's arms move a billion times before you even reach 5 meters? Lol..

After playing the game for a couple of hours I have to say that it's not worth the asking price to me. Partly because I know that the playerbase will die down again after the free weekend, but mostly because it's just not a lot of fun. And that's actually a bit of a shame because they did do more than a few things right in terms of game design... it's just too bad that their execution is pretty bad on the whole and that takes all the fun out of playing the game.

This statement sums up the entire game. I feel the same way. On one hand they implemented some pretty cool things, but they failed in making a good game with replay value. Add to that the glacial pace at which the updates came out and quite a few people are upset with Splash Damage.

I still haven't written off Brink entirely. It will always have the potential to be fixed and creep back in under the radar as a cult hit, but thats not what they were shooting for. Haven't played since this last update came out, but I don't expect much improvement in the "I want to play this game" category.

Tried the free weekend. It sucked. If you release a game that's all about running and shooting in 2011 then you're expected to have the running and shooting bits down to a fine art. Brink struggles with the basics.

I don't really understand all the hate. It's not amazing or anything, but it's far from the turd that most are making it out to be. I'm not sure how long it will last, but I've enjoyed the 4 hours or so I've played this weekend.

Ran at like <20 fps on the lowest settings on a 3.4ghz c2d and 5850. Unistalled promptly!

Were you trying to play single player?

In the most retarded move of the century, they capped single player mode to 30fps. I never understood the point of that except to essentially "force" people to want to play online so that the game doesn't suck.

Most of the hate seems to come from the fact that it could have been so much more but instead there are just so many bone headed problems with the game that ruin the experience.

I mean PC gamers are stuck with the same problems they've had since day 1 of the games release.

Considering who developed it , people had high hopes. They expected polish and excellent design and instead they were met with broken and confusing game.

I dunno, I believed the hype and bought ET:QW on release, and I was incredibly disappointed. The graphics were great, but the gameplay felt repetitive (lots of fixed installations you had to interact with every time you started a new map), and the combat felt like I was just using a peashooter no matter what class I chose. It didn't feel like a complete package, and that's the reason people either went with TF2, or went back to playing BF2 -a game 2 years older!

The only people expecting a perfect game out of Splashdamage were those who passed on playing ET:QW. I did not give into the hype this time around, and I'm quite glad...because I already have one of their games collecting dust on my shelf :D

I played the game briefly over the free weekend. I thought it sucked imo. Did not return to it and will not be buying it ever. The game just felt wrong.

I tried the game and was trying to follow objectives and actually listen and learn and just ended up getting killed. I thought they said something about classes so I assumed I had certain duties to perform but to me it looked like we were all just runnin' and gunnin'.

Graphics and trailer looked kinda cool but it was a damn cluster F. Glad I didn't buy it.

It is exactly the turd that everyone is making it out to be. The high hopes certainly did not help the impression of the game. I found a way to enjoy it enough to make four or five characters up to level 20, but there are glaring issues that keep me from coming back. The graphics are horrible on the console. I accept less quality graphics in console games, but I understand the pc graphics were bad as well.

Texture loading is slow, and quality is low. There are no lobbies.. Framerate is low. Guns feel plastic. AI has impeccable aim. There are no lobbies.. Games are 95% filled with AI. Customization was disappointing. There are no lobbies.. Story line was phoned-in. Missions were repetitive.

I've said from the start that this was maybe worth it for $20, maybe.

How do you rank up in this game? I'm level 9 I think, but only rank 2. I read somewhere that you need to do the campaign or challenge modes, but that doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Does it just come in time?

Edit: Just hit level 10 and was promoted to rank 3 also.

so I see you're in the pc gaming forum rating the console version, which recieves zero steam integration, latest patches, or dedicated servers.

it's really only something you can get a hang of once you put time into every map, and if you only jumped on for a tiny bit over the free weekend, i can assure you that most of the people were in the same boat as you. i personally love that aspect of the game. i was confused as hell at first too because i was not using the wheel and didn't know the "story" or "objective" of each map well enough, and more importantly, the different routes and layouts of the maps. but, once you get past that learning curve, and a few people in your team are past it as well, that's when the games start getting pretty damn awesome.

you learn where the cool choke points and where the key points to hold are. i have been in some pretty epic battles for map control in the 20 or so hours i have put into the game so far. personally, the most fun for me are the "escort the vip" maps. the majority of the ones i've played have been intense matches till the very last seconds.

i understand, there are plenty of technical issues with the game, and a lot of people probably will not enjoy the bullet-spongy feel of gun fights. i personally don't mind it and am getting a better feel for some of the weapons which results in more headshots and quicker kills.

i really hope people who might not have given it a good few hours in some full online servers can give it another honest shot because it has really grown on me.

Well, I'm going to have to admit I was wrong in purchasing the game, even for $20. It's not fun at all. Well, at least not for me. I haven't uninstalled it, but I also haven't had the urge to play it in over a week. L4D2 and HCW2 has been much more entertaining to me. With Bastion and From Dust being released this week, I'll certainly be busy for a while with them as well.
