H.P. has developed brain-like transistors that could shrink chips down to the atomic level. They’re not quite ready to make artificial brains yet, but H.P. researchers believe that by 2013 this could be a serious challenger to flash memory. Thanks to Archer1212 for the linkage!
“A memristor's strength is derived from the fact that it is far simpler than a traditional semiconducting transistor and that it can store information without an electric current. It's also much, much smaller—3-nanometers, compared to 30-40 nanometers in today's most advanced transistors—which is important to note as chipmakers hit a wall in terms of transistor size.”

basically, this might take us away from binary code right? instead of 1's and 0's, we now could have 0-1000's... its easy to imagine a language with that many more characters would be exponentially more efficient... i think?

Developing an experimental technology is one thing. Making it work on an industrial manufacturing scale is quite another. They still have a long way to go before this will even come close to hitting the commercial market. Military and scientific research firms will get this first.
