Hey guys, just curious what my bottleneck is on dayz? I know it has shit for optimization but I usually run the game on low as possible so I can see people without the extra foilage, etc.

However, I still get 20fps sometimes. I'm trying to get as high as possible with this laptop. I have the option to do SLI and will eventually but was just curious what is holding me back thus far in arma2/dayZ?

Also, the turbo boost.. I'm a little confused how it works. Will it automatically run at the max speed when I load games like dayZ or is there a chance it might not push all of it's potential(ie. using throttlestop)?

Just wanting to get the most out of my little Lenevo y400.

Basically turbo only works if the application doesn't use multiple threads and requires fast single threaded performance. DayZ isn't single threaded.

As for your issue, I'm thinking it's the CPU.

That mobile i7 should be able to handle DayZ just fine. I play with a much older desktop i7 in my signature and I get ~30 fps under high settings @ 1920x1080, when I had a 570 GTX instead of my 470 GTX, I was getting much better FPS.

Are you sure your laptop isn't getting hot?

I'm stumped. It seems you have one of the "good" mobile 3D devices, which uses legit GDDR5 for video RAM rather than system RAM (a drawback of former generations of "mobile" versions of desktop video cards). So that's not it.

To rule out the CPU being the bottleneck, I guess you could run Performance Monitor while running the game in a window. That's how I learned that it was indeed my CPU - among other things! - that was making Grand Theft Auto IV run like garbage, a few years ago (no kidding, it was maxing out my Core 2 Duo E8500).

Is it possible you have some background program doing something that demands the CPU's attention temporarily? It's annoying, but sometimes you'll still run into a program that "grabs" your CPU and much makes everything else unresponsive while it's running.

That's all I got.

The mobile CPUs should be using Turbo Boost all of the time as long as they are running within the thermal and turbo power limits. Check off the Log File option in ThrottleStop while gaming so you have a record of your CPU's performance.

Some laptop manufacturers have done tricks like disabling Turbo Boost when the GPU is active so you need to check to make sure you are getting the Intel rated speed that you paid for. The ThrottleStop TRL window will show you what multiplier you can expect based on how many cores are in the active state. As more cores become active, the amount of Turbo Boost decreases and as cores go back into one of the low power states like C3 or C6, the amount of Turbo Boost increases. This is happening continuously. ThrottleStop uses high performance timers within the CPU to show you a very accurate average when this is happening.

any comments? maybe running a small fan beside it to get some moving air under it?

105 is the threshold=/
