No High's, No Low's, Must Be Bose...

I have Bose audio in my car (Audi TT) and it sounds OK. It is absolutley nothing to write home about and for the $1200 charge I could have done way better in the aftermarket...

the stock stuff in my 01 dodge stratus sounds better then the $1100 bose option in my grandfathers car. then again i've found my stock speakers sound way better then a lot of speakers out there :p.

.
What makes you so sure that they even tried or wanted THX certification? Do you realize its just a little badge that they pay for to make people think they are good?
Tomshardware.com believes THX is a stamp of good quality, which proves how overrated THX is. THX is a very powerful marketing tool as many audio newbs are excited about having George Lucas certified sound, and because BOSE spends all of their money on marketing I would imagine that they would of tried to get this certification several times before, but I doubt that any of BOSE's speakers are good enough to get this little certification. Hey THX isn't that overrated, George Lucas would run tests which seem to be easy to pass but a challenge that would bring any BOSE speaker set to it's knees. (THX is overrated, but BOSE is even more overrated for selling $6000 sets that aren't good enough to be THX certified.)

.BOSE = Buy Other Sound Equipment! So what are my alternatives? Should I get the Logitech z-5300? They are $200 AUD cheaper and than the z-680 and there's a small difference. The z-5300 and z-680 have the same subwoofer

One of my BOSE-o-phile friends was getting excited about a 150 watt subwoofer from kenwood. After I told him that the creative gigaworks has a 210 watt subwoofer he was going apeshit. quote: that's a low-range amp retard. unquote: Well kenwood wouldn't be as bad as BOSE. BOSE don't even show any specifications on their website, just a bunch of sentences containing self promoting lies etc.
When you choose from our family of acclaimed Wave® systems, you're bringing home a long legacy of rich stereo performance from a small, easy-to-use system. At the heart of this legacy is a 14-year, $15 million research effort
More like a 14-year $15 million dollar marketing effort.

This breakthrough was so extraordinary its engineers won the prestigious "Inventor of the Year" award. The discovery led to the introduction of three Wave® products which use acoustic waveguide technology to produce full, clear stereo sound from a small enclosure, much as a flute strengthens a breath of air to fill a concert hall. The result is spacious music that sparkles with the subtle nuances of instrumentals and vocals.
Jesus Christ where do I start?
WTF is the "inventor of the year award"? And there is no evidence that this award is prestigous as nobody has ever heard of it. WTF is waveguide technology, they do not provide any information about it nor any information to prove that it is good. In the end there are no specifications thus no way to tell if these outrageous claims are true. Only a gullable idiot that finds a BOSE ad in a playboy magazine would believe these tall tales.

BOSE should provide specifications on their website! BOSE corp describe themselves using buzz words etc.
The proprietary, integrated system design found in Bose Lifestyle® systems has set new standards for complete home audio solutions. They have been engineered to be the best-sounding, easiest-to-use music and home theater systems ever.

They provide no evidence that this is true. Well this does not count as evidence.
Bose Corporation established itself by introducing the 901® Direct/Reflecting® speaker system in 1968. With this introduction, Bose achieved international acclaim by setting a new standard for lifelike sound reproduction.
They did not provide any information about this so called "direct/reflecting technology" so why in the world would anybody believe this clap trap? They believe this clap trap because

Today, you can hear Bose wherever quality sound is important. From the Olympic games to the Sistine Chapel. From NASA space shuttles to the Japan National Theatre. In the home and on the road, from large outdoor arenas to intimate neighborhood stores and restaurants, you can hear the realism of the most respected name in sound—Bose.
The search is over, this is why people buy BOSE speakers. The one fact that is boosting BOSE's popularity. The only piece of information on the entire BOSE website that was not a complete lie. But the only reason they have been used in all of these places is because of their popularity from millions of dollars of marketing.

Bose Corporation was founded in 1964 by Dr. Amar G. Bose,
the unbelievable, horryfiying consequences of 40 years of multimillion dollar marketing to the unexpecting consumer. BOSE® Better Sound Through Marketing®

Kenwood are selling speaker sets with 150 watt subwoofers for $1000+. what a joke. The creative gigaworks has a 210 watt subwoofer and is only a fraction of the price!

If you buy a pair of BOSE speakers you may feel like throwing them out the nearest window, please dont! Some poor homeless guy might pick it up, don't be that heartless and cruel.
1964 was a long time ago. I hope Dr. Amar G. Bose has died or at least withered away from old age. .

I am sure that the equations on the blackboard are marketing related.
better sound through research
Whoops, that's a typo.
Better sound through marketing
Hey BOSE advertise in playboy. try this acronym on for size: B*rain-washing O*ur S*tupid E*rotic-fans. Not really an acronym but it's the best one I have heard since Buy other Sound equipment.

Enough of the BOSE bashing. Should I get the logitech z-560's or the z-5300's

Paul Klipsch would kick Amar Bose's ass.

Hell, Henry Kloss would kick Amar Bose's ass.

Do a test on the creative gigawork sub, see if they are telling the truth.

More like a 14-year $15 million dollar marketing effort.

This "Marketing Effort" started recently (as in a few years, starting with their radios), their older products actually aren't that bad.

WTF is waveguide technology, they do not provide any information about it nor any information to prove that it is good. In the end there are no specifications thus no way to tell if these outrageous claims are true. Only a gullable idiot that finds a BOSE ad in a playboy magazine would believe these tall tales.

Waveguide technology refers to the tubes they have inside their radio's. Their more expensive radio uses a 7 foot tube inside to reproduce their sound. Their theory is the farther the air travels, the better sound is produced.

They provide no evidence that this is true. Well this does not count as evidence.

Have you ever used one of their Lifestyle systems? They are pretty damn easy to set up for the audio-noob. Few wires makes it the best for the lazy American.

That much has been established much earlier in this thread.

the unbelievable, horryfiying consequences of 40 years of multimillion dollar marketing to the unexpecting consumer. BOSE® Better Sound Through Marketing®

It wasn't always that way, kiddo.

Kenwood are selling speaker sets with 150 watt subwoofers for $1000+. what a joke. The creative gigaworks has a 210 watt subwoofer and is only a fraction of the price!

Hear it before you bag on it, don't follow power ratings from a multimedia set.

Enough of the BOSE bashing. Should I get the logitech z-560's or the z-5300's

You call that bashing? Learn to troll better.

Paul Klipsch would kick Amar Bose's ass.

Hell, Henry Kloss would kick Amar Bose's ass.

Not only that, but Henry Kloss would quite probably kick Klipsch's skinny little ass, and he do it with better sound quality for less money. ;)

Meh. Kloss sold out, what, like half a dozen times? :D

Less money, maybe. Better SQ? I'm a firm believer in "you get what you pay for." I once heard a pair of K-horns driven by a Nak PA-7A fed by an old Krell CD player.

I think I saw God.

Oh, no. It's still accurate. Bose-ites get exactly what they deserve. :D

Should I get the logitech z-560's or the z-5300's

What soundcard should I get?
Should I get a soundblaster audigy or a Creative Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS ?

My pick from that list would be the 560's and the 2ZS.

The 5300's are still an unknown quantity for me, and you couldn't give me an audigy1.

aren't the 5300s just 4.1 Z680s (if so, in theory 5300>560)
A2>A1

But if someone is giving A1's away, I'll take one :)

I'll just go ahead and assume you haven't heard the CSW Tower I or the Newton towers then. Hell, find someone with the Large Advent Loudspeaker and intact or rebuilt drivers.

I've heard two setups with Klipschorns and frankly, I was not that impressed. Not for the money they (still) want. They are insanely efficient, which is nice if you have a 10W 1950's tube amp like Klipsch designed the KHorn for. Of course if you do, you must have a THD fetish, and I suggest you break out some warped 78's ;)
But for the money? If you think they're tops I think you need to look around some more ;)

At that price level and the nature of the placement required, I'd take some used, beat up Martin-Logan Monoliths or Maggys in a heartbeat. Well, faster than a heartbeat.

You are making a purchasing decision based on what you read at toms paranoia site?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Seriously: locate a retailer in your area that has these speakers and go listen to them.
You may figure out the easy way just how worthless those reviews are.
It sure beats returning something you bought that you don't like. ;)

Well after Tomshardware.com gave the logitech X-620's (which sound like absolute craP) a good review, I was a little suspicious. Well what website should I go to for speaker reviews?

Edit: thanks for the advice. The reviews at Tomshardware.com are worthless.

yea- i recommend the previous advice-- stay away from most online review sites in regards to audio products... they don't have your ears, so it's impossible for an accurate review... go to best buy or something, listen to all the crap they pipe through their speakers... it helps to hear it for yourself..

i've found that maximum pc is usually pretty dead-on in terms of accuracy of audio reproduction in PC Speakers...

i have the logitech 680's and i love them. obviously, they're not a $5k audiophile home system or anything, but they're excellent nonetheless

I found that at BB they have such a horrible setup that sometimes the better speakers bring out the flaws and sound worse

Well the z-560's are the best speakers that I can afford unless i don't buy a soundcard. So I will listen to the z-560's. If they aren't good enough for me then I'll save up for the logitech z-680's.

There's not much difference between the Z560's and Z680, except the center channel, decoders, and remote control.

If you're not happy with the Z560's, you should look at the Megaworks, Gigaworks, or Klipsch Ultra's.

What an ignorant post.

The design of the Z680's is much better than the Z-560's. Audio guru.

But, would he hear the difference due to the better cooling solution on the sub? I think not.

He said, he will "listen" to the Z560's, not look the design of the sub...:)

I listed the major things, that he would take into consideration. Not every little single detail...oh mighty one.

So I guess he'll "listen" to his differently designed control pod, Duckbot?

The satellites, subwoofer, amp, enclosure design, are different on the Z-680's than the Z-560's. If you want to keep testing me audio guru, I'd be more than happy to show you the crap quality of how the Z-560's are ultimately inferior (and not just power-rating wise) to the Z-680's, and it's not just because of the subwoofer.

"Not much difference".

Shut up.

Not sure if you're able to hear it, but here's some good advice. I'm sure you're the ultimate SQ-guru, but it doesn't matter if you have a line into God's Audio Database. If your social skills stink, nobody want's to hear it. Grow up or shut up.

PS - Your social skills stink and nobody wants to hear it.

PPS - You've already been hit with a great big mute button so don't waste any keystrokes on a reply, hero.

Beside the addition of a differently designed center channel, there's no difference in the remaining sats besides the color. (black vs. grey) Please explain what you're talking about here before telling me to shut up.

No offense soupnazi but The z-560's and z-680's are different, not just design-wise.

I know where you guys are coming from, but the Z560's and Z680's sound VERY similar. So if you weren't happy with the Z560's sound, why would you be that much happier with the Z680's sound.

That's the reason I recommended those system's above before Duckbot started picking on me as usual.:p

I have attained my goal in life! :D

You folks need to chill the hell out.
These are multimedia speakers for crying out loud.
It's not like we're arguing Tube amps versus transistors or Klipschorns versus Martin-Logans here :)

Now would someone please give me specific, referenced details on how the Z-680 satellites (outside of the center) differ from the 560 satellites in any way besides the cosmetic?

I'd really like to know.

They appear to use the same drivers, they appear to have the same enclosure, and they sound very, very, very similar.

The crossover is not in the satellite, and I dont believe the crossover frequency was changed.
The amplification is also in the sub enclosure and the power input does not change the design of the satellite.

Now would someone please give me specific, referenced details on how the Z-680 satellites (outside of the center) differ from the 560 satellites in any way besides the cosmetic?

z-560 = sattelite power rating = 53 RMS watts

z-680 = sattelite power rating = 62 / 69 watts RMS

z-560 = sattelite power rating = 53 RMS watts

z-680 = sattelite power rating = 62 / 69 watts RMS

This is the amplifier output specification from Logitech, not the speakers rated power handling. Very different.

Since they appear to use the same driver, there is no evidence that the 560 satellites are incapable of being hooked up to the 680 sub and being driven to the same SP levels as the preexisting satellites and handling the same amount of actual power.

I already stated that the amplification is in the sub, and does not appear to affect the satellites construction, and this is not in any way evidence of that.

I'd pay about as much attention to this as I would a PMPO power output number.

Try again.

edited for clarity

The satellites do in fact use the same drivers, they are made by Tang-Band. The Parts Express page for them. I've used my Z-560 satellites full-range off my Sharp NX10 and you do need to EQ the bass down a little bit (or just fill the ports like I did) and they sound amazing with horns, but they aren't really great by themselves.

Precisely as I thought.
The "cabinet" design also appears to be identical outside of cosmetic differences, so we still do not have any evidence suggesting that the 680 satellites (NOT the center) are in any functional way different.

Full-range? Those suckers just arent built to go below 80Hz or so.
