Borderlands worth getting?

The game is now $30, so i am considering buying it. Do you think it is worth it?

As long as you know going in you want to play with other people. The games ok solo, but the real value comes with playing online with friends, games balance is better online, you get better weapons and items. I found offline too easy and very few rare drops.

If you're only going to play offline, at this point I'd say no. wait til it's like $15.

Theres some group buys going on in the trades section if you wanna get it for $22 or so.

If you do decide to get it and play online I can try and make some time to play with you. same steam ID.

The most fun is playing with buddies. Really, if you're going to be just playing solo I would skip it.

I would definitely get it. You may even be able to find some people who still have group buy copies for cheaper in the For Sale/Trade forum.

I had a blast rolling with some buddies in this game. I never had the time to play through on Solo but a friend said he still enjoyed it.

it may be a better experience with friends, but it is still a great experience going solo.

I waited for a steam sale when it dropped to $20. I echo what people said here. It's a good game solo (not great), just because it only feels like you're doing missions with the same mechanic (shooting stuff). If you do all the side missions, it gets extremely easy near the end. I did thoroughly enjoy the boss fights though and thought they were great - I wish there were more of them. I like the visual style though..wish more games were cell shaded.

With a friend though, the game really opens up. The difficulty's ramped up and more balanced, but the gameplay actually changes because the Enemy AI is gunning for multiple targets. You can engage flanking tactics, have someone go Rambo and revive them later, or have someone snipe while others engage at midrange. There are also "team" abilities/powers that only come into play when you're with multiple people.

If you have friends to play with, this is a great game. I never went into public games though - not sure what that experience is like, though I'm sure you'll find plenty of good people, as well as drop whores....Good Luck!

It has problems with FOV and definitely shows a degree of consolitis with how you navigate the menu's. Otherwise, it's probably a good shooter like everyone says. Me, on the other-hand, cannot play it with its terrible FOV issues due to induced motion sickness.

There are ways to tweak the FOV... Look up the Borderlands Config Editor.

The issue is you have to constantly "force" the FOV because on launch the game defaults back to the narrow view. So what most people do is set it to the same key as movement forward. So whenever it gets reset (maybe jumping in a vehicle or changing levels) you just move forward again and it goes back to your better FOV. This doesn't happen too often and you get used to it.

Besides that, yea the game is fun when you play with friends. It's pretty boring solo. I rushed through the second half of the game skipping a lot of side-quests and sort of regret it. It sucks for the artists though, they create these amazing environments, levels, etc. and the player spends 20 minutes in them and is gone. The game could have been so much longer, even though it only took me ~25 hours to finish the main campaign.

Do you like violence? There is a lot of immolation, disintegration, sniping, shotgunning, driving... there are some sweet shooting galleries, and on the other hand there are these arenas of escalating difficulty, where beasts or goons try to overwhelm you. Those really get the blood running.

I did soldier, with RPGs lately I just usually get the vanilla power class. There wasn't really an issue with any of the (bullet) guns and a lot of the skill trees' best parts are in the first halves (roughly) so I basically went 2/1/1 with damage, clip size, and health/regen. I got a killer heavy gunner mod with 33% weapon dmg and 60% clip size... there's no dual-wield but eventually it's like double damage.

Then I tried Lilith, she has a different style. But I didn't invest that much time in it. She is like a dodgy ninja type... but she can boost elemental on weapons and firing.

One downside is that assault rifles are like the stepchild of items I've seen later in the game, and the experience piles up so at times it was not as difficult to kill enemies, it was fun when they were a level higher.

I wish I could sell you my copy off steam!!! :(

This game is a blast if you have 3 other friends who get it and you play through it in co-op mode for about a week. Then it's over and doesn't have that much replay value aside from doing the game over again as a different class and with higher difficulty. Unless you have a bunch of friends who can play with you, I wouldn't recommend it.

I would liken it to a cross between the childhood fun of 4 buddies going through X-Men arcade combined with playing Diablo but it's an FPS.

I really enjoyed playing this game with my wife and 2 buddies, and I'm looking forward to getting into the DLC's, since we haven't bought any of them yet. Hoping they'll bundle them all together soon for a discounted price.

I put a good 90 hours into this game. I consider that money well spent. Definitely worth it.

According to Steam I've put over 40 hours into that game solo, it's a ton of fun imo. I got my moneys worth.

It's a good game, but leveling up gets a little repetitive if you need to do it to get through the level at hand. Don't be a sniper, just be a brute or something under class selection.

I am going ahead and necro this since I did pick up Borderlands + 3x DLC for $20 during the last Steam sale. My first toon is a Sniper, made it to level 25 in PT1 thus far and didn't find it difficult. Killing stuff from afar is my cup of tea even if it is slower than just running in an killing everything at short range.

I joined a few online games but the loot whoring put a damper on my online enjoyment. Working on getting some locals together to play online with people I actually know IRL as opposed to random pricks. The amount of selfish assholes in what is supposed to be a co-op game is just staggering.

Apart from that though, fun game, not sure if I would want to play it again in Playthrough 2 solo, probably not. I am also a little bit disappointed to see that itemization is meh at times were a blue or even purple weapon has worse stats than a green one, but of course it's always easy to either not pick it up or sell it off.

try switching to a gunslinger, I started as a sniper but found gunslinger to be much more fun. no tresspass, ammo regen + speed multiplier FTW.

I'll consider gunslinger when I find a handgun that has like 21 rounds in the mag. The frequent reloading while getting pounded just isn't for me ...., though perhaps I just need to aim better. ;)

I'm guessing you aren't too terribly far along because I went exclusively gunslinger after a point not too long after I started playing and never looked back.

Keep exploring. You'll see. Masher, Thanatos...so many goodies. ;)

You kill so fast it is not really an issue. even when dropped to last breath, if you have line of sight to a minion you can easily kill them before dying.

Fuck yea its worth it. Sp is fun, but this game really shines once your get a buddy or 3 together for some co-op action.

Go with revolvers. They're very powerful, and although they have low ammo capacity you can level up a skill that will increase it, and you can also increase your reload rate by leveling up your weapon proficiency. My main character is a sniper and I use a combination of revolvers, sniper rifles, and SMGs. Each has their usefulness depending on the situation.

no, some consider it to be the best class. I don't particularly like the skill tree, but there is some good stuff there.

yeah the revolvers are nice.. but i like my insane rocket launchers and alien weapons.. :D i have 1 rocket launcher that does 900x4 damage.. and has 4 shots per reload.. so thats 16 shots total since it fires 4 rockets per shot.. massacred the hell out of the main story line guy..

also found all the hidden boxes and got some sick weapons by having my cousin play co-op with me on his level 50 character.. :p

the big problem I have always had with rocket launchers is that they are considered to be another type of gun. the shooting is apparently not hitscan, ie: rockets can go through enemies. Also does not appear to do decent splash damage. Brick may get some good bonuses for them, but for myself, I was never impressed.

as for alien weapons, overall they are weak, you never get anything better than green, and non of the class mods work with them, so they are fail on multiple levels.

^^^^

rocket launchers do suck in this game. when enemies use them, they do alot of damage on you if it hits. but when you try to direct hit them, it goes right through them...... and splash damage is a joke.

The rocket launchers and alien weapons are all pretty mediocre. I have pistols and sniper rifles that are more powerful when fire rate is taken into account.

I'm playing my first game as siren; am I screwed ?

Best class in the game imo.. The big thing is Girl Power, and either an SMG that does x4 bullet or an elemental x4 SMG especially if it has increased fire rate and to a lesser extent reload speed. I used a lvl 11 purple X4 SMG with increase fire rate and reload speed till about level 25 or 28, the bonuses were that good. Mind games is very powerful with an SMG. Basically anything you hit with an X4 SMG will be dazed even if you don't have max Mind Games, and once they're dazed they can't really fight back.

Using Girl Power and Mind Games you don't try to take cover or play careful, you get right in an enemy's face and blast his head off then move on to the next one. If you're ever about to die pop your Phase Walk which will heal you up because of Inner Glow, and run away for cover or wait for your buddies to distract the enemies and pop back in to finish one off to get some shield back through Girl Power.

Phoenix is kinda weak when you first get it but if you get 5/5 Phoenix with a +4 or so class mod it's sick, but I wouldn't start Phoenix I'd respec into it at 30 or so with a good class mod item.

Haven't played too much, but it seems fairly good so far. Very interesting art style to say the least. Presentation is very slick as well.

Not sure its worth $30, as I got it used on Goozex with a half off gift card, so it ultimately cost the equivalent of $12.50. It has great co-op potential, so if you know anyone that plays it, that would be a bonus.

never had that problem unless your experiencing it online which could be due to lag.. but ive done better with the rocket launchers then anything else especially against the big guys.. the weapons ive always had issues with are the sniper rifles where rounds will seem to go through enemies arms and legs and do no damage.. some of the alien weapons are good when you are playing co-op.. use em to remove their shield/armor then have your buddy headshot them from long range..

It's fun to play with friends, but I don't think I would play it alone.

yep i think ive logged maybe 5 hours playing by myself and a couple hundred hours playing co-op with my cousin..

Sniper rifles aren't hitscan, so if an enemy is far away and moving, you won't hit them if you aim at their current position. Also, if you're a Hunter, you can just level up one of your skills to make all your bullets completely bypass shields.

Agreed. Had a huge blast playing through the entire original game with three other friends. Just got all the DLC when it was on sale at Steam and I find it pretty boring when it's just myself trudging through Jakobs Cove.

yep i know thats why i like playing sniper in games that are actually correct with bullets.. but moving or not moving the bullets would still go through the arms and legs sometimes.. havent played in a while though..

I enjoyed the single-player a lot. The co-op isn't fun with a random pickup group. Actually, it turned me off of multiplayer. Most of them just scattered to the four winds and picked up every weapon in the chests whether or not they needed them.

This led to just loot runs, and I found it quite boring, running to chests before they did to pick up weapons. Reason being, the weapons in multiplayer (especially when there are 4 players) are way more powerful than in the single-player mode.
