A new book written by two IBM engineers claims that, during the development cycle, Sony’s research and development money was spent helping to build the processor for the Xbox 360. Ouch. Definitely interesting reading.

In "The Race for a New Game Machine," he and his co-worker Mickie Phipps tell the story of the whole effort to build the Cell. They also describe how the project went off the rails, ending up with IBM engineers creating the processing chips for two rival videogame consoles and, along the way, delivering to Sony Corp. one of its greatest business failures.

Bad headline. It claims sony funded ibm's development of the cell, and ibm used the dev money on part of the xbox processor design....
 
Sounds like a pretty shady deal to me,but I guess it's the same in any kind of big business.In the end it was Sony's own blunders and delays that really hurt them.The PS3's price alone is a killer in today's economy.

Uh, no. The headline is correct.

All three of the original partners had agreed that IBM would eventually sell the Cell to other clients. But it does not seem to have occurred to Sony that IBM would sell key parts of the Cell before it was complete and to Sony's primary videogame-console competitor.

Parts of the design of Cell ended up in the 360. I'm fairly positive that IBM used the money Microsoft gave them to design the rest of the 360's CPU ;)

I was thinking the same thing. Its pretty hilarious based on how completely hard Microsoft screwed IBM over only thirteen years ago.

And based on what ? IBM have legal papers, that he was allowed to do what he did. So, why would Sony sue his partner for something, which they allowed IBM to do ?
 
Really doesn't sound unusual to me. Sony and Toshiba partner with IBM to develop cell processor. It takes a long time, and in the process IBM gains knowledge about developing processors for consoles. Microsoft partners with IBM to develop console gaming processor. IBM uses existing knowledge to develop triple core processor for Microsoft. Oh the scandal.
 
Sony can cry wolf all they want... remember the original Playstation... that was designed by Sony for who???

Nintendo... that's right... Nintendo dropped out of the project as they wanted to stay 100% cartridge based and came up with the N64 but Sony continued and put it out anyway...
 
Wait, the CPU inside XBox 360 is a not-yet-finished Cell? No wonder the XBox 360 has a high failure rate, it is using an incomplete CPU. ;)

Haven't read the book but I don't really like how the article was written.

IBM took money from nintendo, microsoft, and sony to develop processors for their game systems with nintendo using them again after they made the chip in the gamecube. Since all of them are based off a powerpc chip one would expect that advancements in the chips designs would be spread around. Hell I'm sure you could find links to research paid for by nintendo when they had ibm make the cpu for the gamecube that ended up in both sony and microsofts consoles.

Well the 360 and Wii both use ATI graphics, so AMD isn't doing to bad from this generation of consoles as they are providing the graphics for more than 3 out of every 4 consoles sold, lol.

Right, so they want the company that has the new, more thermal resistant packaging (ATI) and not the one fumbling the flawed GPUs out in the wild by saying consumers should just buy new stuff (nvidia).

No, it's very important for the console makers to own the rights to the tech inside their systems. Microsoft used Intel and Nvidia technology in their last console and were limited in cost of production. This time around, they own the tech in the 360 and can drop costs very low. Sony has a significant stake in a lot of the PS3 tech, but not all of it. They're having a lot of trouble reducing costs. They've made up some ground lately, but it looks like they're going to reach diminishing returns soon. I think that next go around, we're going to see both companies have tight control over their designs and not subsidize console costs at release. They'll both try very hard to start out profiting on systems and then work towards halving production costs within 2 years, while reducing cost of the systems by 40% or so.

Sony contracted IBM to make their processor, IBM surely said OK as long as we can use the tech elsewhere....in the end they both got what they wanted....where is the problem here?

xbox360 failures are directly related to MS inability to properly design the console, not a specific hardware fault per sae.......funny how ATi's cards do not have the same problem dispite having the same or greater thermal loads.......

But the PPEs used in the XBox CPU are IBM designed, based on existing Power designs. I don't think Sony had any significant input in the design of it and that's not even implied by the linked article. The headline is very misleading, sadly something that is becoming very common in the news forum.
 
Thank goodness they left out the part of the cell processor that makes the console shitty, overprices, and difficult to program for.
 
I remember when both were in development and it was announced that IBM would be building and designing the main CPU's for both consoles that a lot of folks were questioning how that would work.

Same company but two teams sworn to secrecy from each other?

Well now you know.
