BOINC

FightMalaria has pretty much finished up. They plan on doing TB research next. They said they would use the FightMalaria servers at first until they get the new one set up. I personally think they should just make a generic name and then just change the sub projects as they complete. Oh well. Not everyone looks at ways to simplify their life.

Good information on RNA I posted in another thread.

I posted in their forums for clarification. Here is what they said:

https://www.rechenkraft.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=75&t=13058&start=120
With the new VM application it is guaranteed that the used RAM never exceeds 4GB (at the moment). When using a newer BOINC Client (7.2.33) it is also assured that only so much VM tasks are started at the same time as the RAM settings allow. We will lower the max. RAM usage to 3 GB when I update the application on Friday. Usually the application takes up to 600MB of RAM when running (but allocates the remaining 3.4GB).

POEM update ***

* Status Update *

Bad news first: The announced MOF simulation takes more time than expected.
We are currently working on a backup GPU project, which now seems to be more readily available.

The Test Server is up and running. Our IT Department is now configuring the Firewall for external access. I'll get the input files for our simulation next week, and will create POEM jobs as soon as possible. The URL will be announced when work units are prepared, because it only serves the dummy BOINC example_app at the moment.

If the jobs run fine on the test server, we will set them up on the live system the first week in February.

Thanks for your patience.

Excellent news! Fingers crossed that it goes as planned. Will be nice to get some new POEM work.

I took 9th place in over all BOINC points for our team according to BOINCStats.com

Edit: and metallicafan is on notice!

RNA update. http://www.rnaworld.de/rnaworld/home.php
I updated the vboxwrapper to the latest version and decreased the memory limit to 3GB for Windows.

There will be no new work. The new version will be send out when old Tasks fail and a new instance of a Job is created. This could take some time. If you have unstarted RNA World tasks please abort them.

Gave Einstein a quick try on my Ivy Bridge HD2500 GPU, but all I got was a flicker of GPU load every minute or so, followed right away by "display driver has stopped responding and has recovered", over and over. That was with the latest drivers and OpenCL SDK from Intel's site, on Windows 7 X64. No more time to mess with it right now so I'll leave the CPU to crunch some Cosmology and have another go at it later on.

I too have had many computation errors derived from those units. That and the intel opencl units aren't worth very much at all 60ish points? I don't think it's an issue with Einstein though, and is likely an opencl driver issue with intel. I think.

I couldn't tell you on the Intel side. I don't have any of those in my farm to play with. My job wont be disposing of any of those systems for another 3-5 years either...so I will be late to that game.

Collatz is still down. They didn't put a date on this message, but when you go to their page, this is what it says:

The Collatz server is currently down due to a hard drive controller failure. New hardware should arrive in the next day or two. A complete rebuild of the operating system, BOINC, and the Collatz software and project setup will then need to be done prior to the project coming back online. As this will be a complete rebuild, there is no sense hanging on to any completed workunits at this time. So, go ahead and abort any workunits you have whether they are complete or not. I expect the project will remain down for the next 10-15 days while I set it all back up and test it. Sorry for any inconvenience. And yes, I will make up for the lost credits once everything is back up and running.

I also found this over at PrimeGrid about using an R9 290X http://www.primegrid.com/forum_thread.php?id=5487#72659

The BOINC server does not recognize the 290 and won't automatically send tasks to it. It should, however, send tasks to it if you use a correctly configured app_info file.

Please post the app_info file contents, the location (directory) of where you put that file, and both the beginning of the BOINC log as well as the portion of the BOINC log that shows what happens when you request work.

I thought that might help if anyone switching over tried using it.

Not sure how that happened, but I just noticed my Galaxy S3 wasn't attached to WUProp. That sucks...coulda had a lot more time attributed to badges. :eek:

Intel having driver issues? Did they hire some AMD graphics driver developers or something? :D

Thanks for the info, I'll leave it be for now and maybe give it another try when the drivers & support have matured a little. The i3 box is still a pretty decent system, only pulling 68 watts at the minute with 4 threads occupied!

On another note, my Milkyway account decided to drop itself from the [H] team again yesterday. It happened a month or so back, but I think that time Collatz did it as well. I'm positive I didn't change anything, wonder if it's a bug with BAM or something. Oddly, both times it seemed to happen after I set up a work preference on BAM, for a host not attached to either project. I haven't been able to reproduce it and fortunately each time I've only "lost" a few k of production, but I'll have to get into the habit of glancing at my team to make sure it's not gone walkabouts I think. Very strange.

knreed at WCG made an announcement. https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,36217

We have encountered some batches of work for Mapping Cancer Markers that are only generating errors on the volunteer computers. We have temporarily stopped sending work for the project while we investigate the issue.

UPDATE
We have resumed sending work for Mapping Cancer Markers.

After working with the researchers, we have resolved an issue that caused errors on a number of batches of work. We have removed these from distribution and we are in the processing of reloading the fixed versions.

If you want to make sure that your client does not have any of these errant tasks, you can go to the Advanced View, Projects tab, Select World Community Grid and then press the Update button. Any tasks that should be removed will be removed from your client following this communication.

We apologize for this issue and appreciate your patience while we resolved it.

Thank you for your ongoing contribution and participation.

Malariacontrol is having some maintenance issues. Going to their website gets you this message:

Site is temporary unavailable.

Sorry, we had a major failure! We're dealing with it and should be back next week, but the server will be down at least over this weekend.

We apologize for any inconvenience.

Einstein Gamma Ray Pulsar Search 3 OpenCl apps are currently on hold while they investigate memory allocation problems. CPU workunits are live, however, and worth 660 points.

AAAAND... Now Asteroids is down... Been 24 hours now, so I think it's safe to assume it's not just an intermittent thing. No error message as of yet like Collatz, though.

Now, here's my theory: IT'S ALL THE FAULT OF PG AND THE ROGUE MODS ON FF!!!! They're so pissed about All the 4P systems being brought over to BOINC they're out to sabotage any DCing that's not F@H!!!!!!

(/sarcasm, just in case that wasn't clear) :D

Asteroids@home is down for a server upgrade. This was a planned downtime. Should be back up tomorrow I believe. https://twitter.com/AsteroidsAtHome

Welcome to any new BOINC folks. Quite a while back, (for those of you that recall the F@H/FF fallout with Razor and the whole Advisory Board) I realized that I didnt want any drama in my computing hobbies. DC should be drama free, productive, varied, and fun. I dont hold any grudges or anything like that but for those of you looking for a new project to support, WCG or another BOINC project should fit the bill well. Have fun!

Thanks for the heads up, Metallicafan - for some reason my main computer I'm typing this on didn't show that message in the BOINC Notices tab, but I just did a small update on my daughter's computer and noticed it has been there for a week...

I was getting a bit concerned - and I only have about 30 more tasks to download to hit my 2.5M goal there!

Would you look at that! I'm actually proud they finally did that. It's going to be very different from the Caldexa or whatever HP used in their first gen Moonshot. I'd even wager a guess that they'll have it running OpenCL apps in no time. I wonder how it'd do on the ARM compatible projects.

Less that 50 BRP4G units left at Einstein, so get em' while they're hot!

Also, Asteroids is back up! :eek:

I doubt we see them any time soon since they are for servers. There will probably have to be enough for someone to take the time to code for. I have no idea how these servers will function yet. If one assumes that it will simply run Linux and function like any other ARM based Linux build, then yes it would probably finally bring the justification ARM needs in DC'ing. Then the real numbers can be looked at on whether it is truly viable. I'm thinking up front cost for now will be the catch.

I'm sure that AMD has a plan to perhaps include it as part of the OpenCompute platform or something of the sort. So software support should be forthcoming. I'll give AMD that, they really do try to leverage what they have to at least promise good software for future products. But with Mantle delayed again, the delivery part is something they have to work on. I'd say because it'll be a niche product at first, it'll be expensive. But I'm curious how it'll perform still. Good find!

I resurrected and donated a Dell Optiplex 330 today to my daughter's daycare. They were still letting the kids play on computers built back in 2000. Shame on them. :) This one at least has wifi and a dual core. I set up BOINC to run after hours so that it wouldn't interrupt Dora the Explorer. Hopefully, they leave it turned on. I have plans on getting them 3 more PC's. There is at least another 330 on the bench and possibly two Optiplex 520's. Crossing my fingers to 8 more borged cores. (yes they know BOINC is on them, but the staff may forget since it really isn't their priority. They also have cinder block walls, so wifi may not make it.)

Hey Gilthanis, since you've ran Seti@home Beta, do you know if you can add an app_info.xml or app_config.xml file to run more than one WU on a high end video card? My 9800GTX+ is putting out okay numbers (about 4-5K ppd), but I've hit my F@H goal, so I'm bringing the GTX680 back to BOINC. I know it should crank through one at a time like a hot knife through butter, but I was hoping for more. Can I just copy the regular Seti@home file, or are the application names different enough in the beta that won't work?

That is what I did and it seemed to work just fine. I will forwarn you that SETI points suck donkey wiener. So, if you have a specific goal in mind be prepared to be there a while. :D

This is what I used for both SETI and SETI BETA

<app_config>
<app>
<name>setiathome_v7</name>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>0.5</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>0.06</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>
<app>
<name>astropulse_v6</name>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>0.5</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>1.00</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>
</app_config>

It also appears that they are dabbling with the badges built into the new server code at SETI BETA. Apparently, I am in the top 5% and so the team is in the top 25% over all. I'm a fan of badges but don't care for the ones that come and go.

Sounds good, thanks - I'm going to do 24 hours to establish a baseline time for the v7 WUs (Astropulse has been fairly dry), then I'll try 0.5 for the next 24 hours, then 0.33, and maybe even 0.25. I know for Einstein, going from 2-3 WUS gave about 20% improvement, but 3-4 was almost negligible.

SETI Intel GPU app is now out of beta!

Collatz is back up too. And they seem to have the default badges that are built into the new server code as well. It is the ones that tell you if you are in the top so many %...

Is there a way to run 2 BOINC Managers? I may have to quit the other BOINC projects and concentrate on GPUGRID alone. I set the manager to cache a couple days work but GPUGRID keeps running out of work before the day is over.

Both my GPUs sitting idle now. :(

I can only upload/download during the night when my data cap doesn't apply.

Have you raised your cache? If so, what were your settings? Running two clients that fight over the same GPU is not a good idea. Excluding one Gpu from each client is possible and yes it is possible to run multiple clients...but try raising the cache first. You can refer to my guide for installing BOINC to get a run down on the advanced settings if you aren't sure what I'm talking about. (not sure how familiar you are with the client)

Raised my cache? Yes, to 2.00/1.00. I don't know what's getting cached though. WCG or GPUGRID wus. WCG seems to not run out of work but GPUGRID does most days. Though not as early as today.
Since the settings in the manager are global I can't tell it to cache more gpu work. Unless I stop doing all other projects that is.

I don't know about GPUGRID, but some projects have server-side limits. Could that be the cause? EG: WCG - Beta project limit is one WU per thread, POGS limit is 10 WU per thread, etc.

That is possible KMac, but I don't think GPUGrid does it. Chelsea...you could manipulate the client in a few ways.
1. You can raise your cache for GPU only by setting WCG to No New Tasks and then raise your min/max to a larger amount say 5 days or even 10 for that matter. (though having that much work will
probably mean you wont get the bonus for returning within 24 hours or whatever it is at GPUGrid). I would set it for 3 days maybe and experiment on what keeps you filled up. Then when you have your desired amount, change the cache back to the amount for WCG and then set WCG back to accept new work.

2. I would set the min and max both to the amount you want cached. If you want 2 days worth, put them both to 2 days. That way you know you have the upper limit. (You can always change it back when you are done getting work) If you don't download more than 4 days worth of work, it is ok to let WCG download that much. That way as long as you continue to return them within 4 days you still qualify to receive BETA work. (You may even just want to consider 3 days worth to guarantee this at first.) WCG also doesn't give any bonuses for early returns of WU's, so if it takes 10 days...so what.

I'll just try upping the cache settings again and see how it goes. I'll try 3.00/3.00. I'm not staying up after midnight each night just to change settings in the manager during the download period I set.
