Been out of the loop on hardware since I got a stable rig going :) Now that it has gone kaput, it's time to upgrade. The rig I'm planning is a HTPC with a full atx board. I was orginaly going for a micro-atx (ABIT NF-M2 nView) with x2 4200 65W, but came to the conclusion that I probably have better chances at finding a super stable board if I didn't limit myself with the board size. I've been an AMD guy for quite some time, but that was due to the whole bang for the buck AMD had going for itself. Now with the Core Duo chips, it doesn't seem to be the case. Should I go Intel or AMD? Here are the requirements:
-stability (no going to overclock)
-low power consumption (need to keep this rig quiet)
-fanless mobo chips
-HTPC firendly features like decent on board vga, optical out for sound

Bang for the buck is key in my case. I'll be using a geforce 7600 gs with the rig, so the onboard video is a nice to have, but not necessary. Gotta be able to play WoW, you know ;)

Well, looks like the C2D E6400 is the way to go, but the choice of boards is slim compared to AM2 based boards. So far, these board are shaping up as possible choices.

GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3
ECS NFORCE 570 SLIT-A
ASUS P5B-E

If you're not OCing, you can get pretty much any cheap board (even one of the 945/946 boards).

I ended up with this config:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6400
CASE: SILVERSTONE LASCALA SST-LC13-S
RAM: Kingston HyperX 1GB PC2 6400
HEATSINK: Thermalright SI-128
MOBO: GIGABYTE GA-965G-DS3
GPU: GIGABYTE GV-NX76G256D-RH GeForce 7600GS 256MB
PSU: CORSAIR CMPSU-520HX

I will use the HD and DVD drive from my old rig. I'm just hoping the ram will be compatible.
