Blu-ray To Replace DVD Within 3 Years?

Now I am at just under 2000 DVDs. DVDs are so inexpensive that it is almost the ONLY way I watch movvies now...I can't stand broadcast TV or anything with commercials in it.

Say it with me.

My name is Steve, and I'm an addict.

Hi Steve!

I personally couldn't care less which wins. By the time they're cheap enough that I'll be buying a player either one will have one clear-cut, or there will be a cheap dual-format player.

What Blu-ray needs is seasons of shows on one disk to show the appeal of the large disk size. It would be nice to just pop in one disk and get a whole season, cus I am lazy and don't like to switch disk. If they had House season 1 and 2 on blu-ray I'd buy a ps3 right now and start watching.

We ought to be careful. They might wanna fill all that extra, empty space with commercials :D

I wouldn't be the least bit shocked if they did, and they would program a no skip or FF feature. I'm already pist and they havn't even done it yet, YOU GREEDY BASTAGAGES.

Correct me if I'm wrong, they are already doing that pre and post showing... like you would see in the theatres.

Thinking about these formats a little more...

Do we really need them?

Seriously?

You can fit a 1080P movie onto a double layer DVD, or sometimes even on a single layer DVD. It does take some nice processing power to compress and decompress it...but it is a hell of a lot cheaper than either HD-DVD or BR-D.

What, like Coke trivia, anagrams, and name that actor and crap during horrible pop songs?

Previews (trailers/teasers), shows, products, etc.

I kinda enjoy the trivia that they have in the theatres... it sure as heck beats having some local dentist ad or some stupid tv type commercial.

Oh hell. Damn slash.

So does anyone have anything good to say about the new formats, specifically Blu-Ray? Aside from the picture quality, that is.

Helluva good capacity... hence the reason why I'm waiting for thier hybrid rewrite drives for the PC :)

We get local ads as well. The trivia isn't so bad, but the loop is too short. I wish they'd turn off that horrible music playing over head. Maybe 5% of the songs are known, and the rest is from a can. What a career milestone to be played in a movie theater.

Backing up 50 gigs of porn on 1 disc makes me happy. I can't wait for blu-ray to become affordable.

No, but we didn't need DVDs either. The companies want more money and they want us to think we need their new crap. In Sony's case, crap that never pans out to meet its hype.

Actually, we really did need DVD. VHS is utterly crap. DVD's bring much higher ease of use, they are much smaller, they are not quite as easy to damage, and they are digital.

Didn't need those features, just really wanted them. We should've surpassed disc media instead of coming out with two new disc formats. What about those clear things used in Minority Report? Let's get working on those. :D

Yeah, when the HD DVD burner is $50 at Newegg..... then give me a call. But I wont pay $500 for something that COST only $10 more than a standard DVD burner.
