Blu-Ray-On Fire Hot

The Toshiba has less problems and more established firmware. HD DVD and Blu-ray have nearly identical picture quality, so unless you set 3 feet away at 200% zoom watching your movies, you won't tell a difference. The Sony also doesn't have ethernet, and I am unsure about whether it supports TrueHD decoding. Go with whatever makes you happy and fits your budget.

Explain. It is all digital processing hardware. It doesn't cost much more for them to produce. The research costs might be a little more, but it is all lumped in with their R&D departments. The tolerances of the ES line are tighter, but certainly not worth the money. They know they can capture the foolish people who spend vast amounts of money for name brands and 'the best' when in reality it is like putting perfume on a pig. The ES line doesn't offer much over the other models, or even their competition.

Explain? i can't. It is self explainable, i said it is more than the two or three things you said are different. This would mean there are more things different.

i am going to guess you are one of the people that seem to think digital = all the same, so a Phillips POS receiver sounds the same as a nice rotel pre/pro set up?

They both get crappy azz ratings from CNET. It almost makes me think that a Sony PS3 would bet better for a console and it's built in blueray better than others for a HD dvd player.

And I have always been an Xbox 360 chooser along with leaning towards Toshiba in the
HD Format war... Decisions, Decisions...

Exactly. It is all subjective. You could throw the $1300 BR player on a $1000 HDTV, and a $300 BR player would still look better on a higher end HDTV. The processing units in the $1300 BR player aren't much different from the lower end models. The tolerances may be a more narrow margin compared to their lower end counter-parts, but we are talking a consumer market here. Even with 100 inch screens and top notch setups, I would be willing to bet in a blind test you could not tell the difference.

lulz, CNET. Enough said. :p

I think CNet is pretty accurate from my point of view. On T.V reviews anyway.

What's your review site for DVD player's, T.V's, Gaming Consoles
I don't play gaming consoles, so I don't look up reviews on them.

For reviews I look at A/V Revolution, Home Theater Mag, Sound & Vision, Ultimate AV, and a few other resources. I never really stick to one source. After looking at professional reviews I usually turn to forums with people that already own the equipment to see what they have to say. Then I try to find the product in real life before I buy so I can try it out myself and make sure it does what I want.

One word...

Wait for it....

QUALITY!

You get what you pay for. You don't put a $20.00 DVD player or a 300.00 Bluray player in a home theater where your video processor costs more than most people's "home theater" or "media room".

Really people. Just because you are such cheap little bastards doesn't give you the right to start harping on the stupid "HD Wars". You either like one or the other. If you're a videophile, you have both as I do.

This is a great deal on this specific player. It works great and I've had absolutely no problems with the one I currently have.

You sound like a pretentious avsforum dweller. I used to sell high-end A/V equipment. The difference in quality is in no way worth the exponential price increase. But, if you can afford a $50k runco, then I guess paying another $900 for your movie player is irrelevant.

In my opinion best BR player is PS3

But I'm ha[pp[y to see that the stand alone playeres are getting cheaper and cheaper...this way HD vs BR price war keeps going and the only one that benefits is the consumer

Die Hard Four Disk Set pushed me over, well that and Fifth Element.

Picked up BDP-S300 at Buy More, couldnt bring myself to buy a PS3 just to watch movies. But it is nice having a Blu-ray and HD DVD player now, best of both worlds. Also it is a hell of alot quiter then the Xbox 360 and HD DVD drive

My HD player at 99 bucks was fire hot, not this. Good deal for a BR, but not fire hot.

not worth the effort once again.

Yet another person who buys a Toyota over a Lexus and is too stupid to know the difference and says they are the same thing.

Enough already.

Yes, penguincomp’s statement could be taken as a bit harsh, the problem is, he happens to be right.

I made my buying decision after side by side comparisons of two products from two very different companies. I watched both on side by side 60” Pioneer Elite Plasma sets, arguably the best sets on the market so far.

I presented what I thought and still think it a great price for a great player, nothing more nothing less.

No body here enjoys a good audio video argument more then I do, but when people honestly believe digital is digital and it’s all the same, then the argument has to stop because on the facts alone the argument is baseless.

Take the eternally stupid argument about Beta and VHS. Most of you are not old enough to remember but Beta clearly (no pun intended) the better product and even beat SVHS when it was released. For a $200.00 price difference at the time and what turned out to be a really bad attempt at marketing on Sony’s part the consumer lost big time. Sony lost that battle, yes, but they didn’t lose the war. Beta in ½ and ¾ inch format is still the professional recording medium of choice. Now it’s become Beta Digital but in either case find me a TV station that doesn’t own several.

Same holds true with interconnects, in fact Stereo Review is under new management (happened years ago) because they took that stand and were proven wrong by so many people it was truly sad to watch.

Unit construction has an awful lot to do with the end audio and video quality as well, the more stable the disk is when it spins the less error correction is necessary. Having taken the hoods off of just about everything I could find out there it became apparent that Sony has build quality in the bank, and ES makes regular Sony, especially when it comes to transports look bad.

The idea that nobody can tell the difference between receivers, which many people really believe is beyond comprehension.

You can throw specs around all you want but in the end the eyes and ears tell the truth. If you believe in specs then old Techniques was THE product to have because they had a THD number of .0007. Why buy a Krell or Levinson with over 1% THD? You would be crazy right? The fact that a 50 thousand dollar Steinway piano plays with 7% THD must make it the worst piano ever.

On the other hand, nobody wants to talk about the distortions we can hear, TIM or total intermodulation distortion. You might want to do yourselves a favor and look that one up.

Everyone has their own sense of value and everyone has their own priorities. If a media system is not a big priority then for God’s sake don’t spend big bucks on one. Same holds true of cars, houses, airplanes and anything you choose to purchase. That said, nobody (including me) has the right to bust someone else’s balls for their choices in life and how and where they spend their money.

What does piss me off to no end it trying to help someone and ending up at the bottom of a pile of crap for the effort.

So, the deal is the deal, like it or not, buy it or not. I stand to gain nothing either way.
