While i was modding some stuff with the power on, i had some exposed wiring hit some metal in the case. This caused the PSU and the power to my room to go down. I took the psu out of the case and tried starting it. Powering the PSU now will only cause the power to the room to go out. What component inside the PSU could be busted in this case? Pics? Help? I have another PSU that works, maybe i can use some parts from that. Psu in question is a ocz 520 watter.

Wow

Well according to the BS on the OCZ website (wish you had provided the exact model number) :

Overvoltage/Short-Circuit protection

we know now thats a debateable statement, I would contact OCZ and see about a replacement. Some have a 5 year warranty.

Hate to be so raw about it, but if you were messing with bare exposed wiring with the power on, I dont think you should be considering trying to fix it with parts from another power supply. Only thing that might be user fixable without detailed schematic and proper testing equipment would be a fuse unless you were an expert in switching power supply design and repair. Again I apologise for being so direct but I dont want you to kill yourself or blow up your motherboard/cpu.

yes, it was late night and i was messing with some wiring, lol. nothing happened to my other hardware though. i just made a cable with crimp type molex connections and the caps that secured them fell off, so the wiring fell out. pretty weak power supply that couldnt handle that. a fuse was what i was thinking of too yeah. got any more details about fuses in psus?

You have no business playing with exposed wiring. You have hust proven that.

OCZ PowerStreams have a 5yr warranty. Maybe OCZ will repair/replace it for you.

I don't understand why the fuse didn't blow and prevent the electricity in the room from going out because the PSU's fuse should be rated for about 8-10A (for 120VAC), while the circuit breaker for the room should be rated for 15-20A.

I was told that the overcurrent protection found in many PSUs is often unreliable because it depends on either a feedback winding on a transformer (not that exact) or a sense resistor in the high voltage section (may not protect those rails that aren't beefy enough), rather than individual sense resistors for each voltage rail.

if you havent blown or fried anything while wiring\modding, you havent wired enough
