"Diablo 2 is a very important game to Blizzard," said Diablo chief Rod Fergusson. "It helped define the ARPG genre. It was the 20th anniversary of the game last year, Blizzard's 30th anniversary now, and as we're getting ready for Diablo Immortal and Diablo 4. It feels like a great moment to bring this game back."

Honestly I would like if they re released Diablo 1. They put it out as a mini game that one Halloween as a Diablo 3 mini game so we know it’s done. They just need to put it out there.
But sure Diablo 2 why not.

"Diablo 2 is a very important game to Blizzard". I played Diablo 2 again for a while not long ago. The game was filled with more bots than human players, and Blizzard wouldn't do anything about them. That's how "important" the game is to them.

It looks like they remade it using 3D models, but the models look quite primitive. Maybe its the lighting or something, but everything looks made of plastic.

Good time with bots... Made trading fun for a while. I mean after many many years of playing why not

It’s important to them because it was the last title they could release that has enough nostalgia behind it to guarantee a decent amount of sales to make this cash grab worth while.

It's been 20 years. WHY are they doing this?
They should be putting 100% of their time, energy and effort into making Diablo 4 the best Diablo game ever, including communication with fans and even some former Blizzard employees about what can make the formula work, and making sure it has a solid, firm single player element that isn't just an "offline multiplayer" mode. Imagine if they put enough story into the game ala Baldur's Gate, and then crafted a well done Multiplayer and persistent module AFTER making sure single player was well done.

I'd buy that for a dollar.

THEN, only then, worry about D2 and D1 remasters.

To get people back on the Diablo craze, and then drop Diablo IV on the block and watch sales soar! Its all marketing 101

They did release an updated Diablo 1 a year ago that runs correctly on modern OSes. But it's just crisper original graphics.

Blizzard subbed this out btw. No resources were taken away from DIV development.

I've never played it but I somehow have an original copy on my shelf, not sure where it came from.
Will it install on Windows 10?

I am so in for this. I think I must have spent 1000 hours playing d2 in college. I remember before the expansion that the best items were randomized rares dropped by Diablo- diabloii.net keep screen shots of the best random drops by item. It was awesome

Who plays Diablo 2 online? lol.

1. You can't dupe gold and items through save files
2. You have to play with bots because of the internet of things
3. Who plays Diablo 2 online?!

If people want to play Diablo 2 in high res, this is your best option until resurrected comes out

Combine that with PlugY Survival Kit

Seriously? Playing D2 online was really the only way to play the game. There are zero stakes to playing the game in single player. You had zero ability to participate in any of the seasonal content or the competitive nature of the game.
I'll put it like this: Blizzard isn't making a remastered version of this game because everyone was playing this game single player. They're remaking this game because it was a massive online gaming phenomenon. One that apparently you missed or didn't care for.

In single player there is no impetus to do anything other than cheat (get all the gear and be level 99, max your skill and stat points because you can), beat the game once and then move on. Diablo is about the loot and the community. If you're looking to just "beat the game" then that isn't an experience that will drive you to play this game for 1000 hours (even if you don't cheat) - which again is what the online community is doing and not the offline one.

While D2 is an amazing online experience, it's rather stupid to say that there is "no impetus" to do anything besides cheating in SP. I've played countless hours of the game in SP mode over the years, without cheating. For me, cheating was more a thing found online thanks to all the people item duping and shit, especially back in the early days of the game. I remember a time when people would sell duped and modified items on places like Ebay.

I've been playing Path of Diablo mod for a couple years now, and I've never once seen a bot or weird extra randomized items. It's a great community.

And? The people obsessed with anti-cheating didn't have to get any of those items. It still doesn't address "Seasons" or the competitive nature of the game. Which again were much bigger driving forces to continue playing - in addition to trying to get your loot from the slot machine, which for the most part despite some level of hacks couldn't be as done readily in online play as offline play (and that is indisputable. It's impossible to use a "Trainer" in online D2).

Bottom line I'm just saying this is a numbers game. How many players do you think played 1000 hours + of single player only versus how many people played 1000 hours + online? I think you and I both know that the single player people would be vanishingly small versus the online people. All of the content that got cranked out for the game for 10 years after launch was for those online players, whereas if your goal is only to beat the game you have no impetus to ever come back to it. You don't kill Baal 10,000 times for the story. You do it to compete with others and get the best loot possible.
If you hate community and you skipped all that, cool. But again, you probably weren't nearly as obsessed as any of the people that played online and committed a huge amount of hours. I'm just telling you there is no comparison at all with the obsession that was D2 for online players versus offline ones. The fact that you bring up eBay and the reality that people were willing to pay real money for fake items shows that. No single player D2 fan ever came close to that (again, they could just use a save game editor or item manipulator and give themselves the item instead). But that also illustrates how hard it was in the game to get certain pieces of loot (so hard that people would be willing to buy it). And as I mentioned in the other D2 Resurrected thread in the PC gaming section: I played the game for 1000's of hours and still never saw certain pieces of gear. Gear that would take 5 seconds in an editor to get as a single player person.

I am a little confused to this. I mean, Blizzard is terrible about maintaining their games and fixes the issues. This seems like some sort of money grab....

D2 was like maybe one of my most played games ever, on and off.

People may not know this, but D2 already exists again in Project D2. People already play D2 again and its available for anyone, you just need original d2 keys and games. I wonder if that has anything to do with it. I am curious how exactly they are going to "bring it back".

Is this going to be another Warcraft 3 remake that was a disaster.

Wow I never noticed it but then again I don't frequently check up on GOG, odd place to release it instead of their own store but.... OK Not going to argue too much $13 spent and now I have something to do on Sunday.

There are several D2 mods out.

This is going to be another Blizzard fail.... How bored do they think people are? They stop maintaining d2 and taking care of bots etc, and they let the game die. Who the f*ck is going to come back to pay more money for the game they already purchased Blizzard stopped supporting just to improve graphics... pure stupidity. Blizzard already let the game die... This is another warcraft 3 reforged release. I dont even understand why they would attempt this when they have diablo 4 or whatever coming out.

My point, was that there is more to do offline than cheating and, in my experience, it seemed like a lot of people used online to cheat anyway. I'm not disputing anything else here. The, incredibly dedicated, community is why the game (and, arguably, the entire franchise) is still relevant today.

What are you even talking about? You're pissed at them for not supporting a two decade old game? Are they supposed to release updates for it forever?
