My point, was that there is more to do offline than cheating and, in my experience, it seemed like a lot of people used online to cheat anyway. I'm not disputing anything else here. The, incredibly dedicated, community is why the game (and, arguably, the entire franchise) is still relevant today.

What are you even talking about? You're pissed at them for not supporting a two decade old game? Are they supposed to release updates for it forever?

Wut? Did you even read what I wrote? My point was, they let the game die, and it was dying for a while and they did nothing to fix some of the big issues... So, now why in 2021 is the time to re-release the game just with a graphical update? Whats the point of that if they already let the game die and didnt care about it back then....Money grab? Probably? As I said, maybe another warcraft 3 reforged release? They dont really believe just updating graphics is going to somehow start everyone playing Diablo2 again like its a new game release? Thats laughable. Of course they going to charge money for the graphical improvement too who already purchased the games long ago.

Exactly when did D2 die? Pretty sure there's still an active community going to this day. In fact, many of the people in that community have been asking for a remaster for years. Blizzard not continuing to update it doesn't mean the game is dead.

Also, have you been living under a rock for the past decade? Remasters are a rather common thing these days. Even if they're just graphical updates. It's a way to bring in new players and tug on the nostalgia of old ones. This is the first time D2 will be on consoles and given how well D3 did on those devices, there's definitely a good sized audience there. WC3:R was hot garbage, but this is being handled by Vicarious Visions. Everything about it, so far, seems like a far cry from the WC3 disaster.

Unless I am mistaken, arnt the Blizzard servers from D2 shut down and have been shut down for a while? I would describe that as dead....Among all the glaring issues the game had they could not envision fixing, so modders such as Path of Diablo and Project Diablo 2 took the torch to update and fix the issues that Blizzard couldnt figure out how to fix.

Heres my take on this. Blizzard devs logged into Path of Diablo/Project D2 and realized people still had interest in D2 and since probably technically those modders are violatiing EULA anyways, this is a way to make more money taking their fixes and ideas and squashing the modders maybe. I mean, I certainly would rather play a legit D2 on actual Blizzard servers than private modder servers to be honest.

I just quickly scrolled some of the fixes on the pre-order Blizzard site, they literally took pretty much all improvements they noted from PoD and PD2. And of course they are charging $40 for it.

Deep dive video

Thank you so much for posting that... Just watching the video, I feel even more excited... those developers, especially the guy in the black shirt, you can read and feel the emotions on his face that he was completely giddy about working on this project.. at least i see the passion is really there to make it successful. As for the online portion, that's the only thing that worries me.. They kind of shied away from really commenting on the bots and duping.. but hey... The hype is real!

*cracking up the guy in black didn't believe blizzard when he was handed all the left over assets of D2... bless that guy for digging up blizzard's archives and finding all that old shit!!

Seriously? Playing D2 online was really the only way to play the game. There are zero stakes to playing the game in single player. You had zero ability to participate in any of the seasonal content or the competitive nature of the game.
I never once participated in a season in Diablo 2 or 3. I always played Diablo 2 either by myself or on the weekends with my friends over LAN & only did PVP over LAN with them. Had a flippin blast.

Also, that was back in 2000, I had a 56k connection & only one landline.

You guys can be mad, I think it looks great, and I'll probably be in day 1.

As for why someone doesn't maintain a 20 y/o game for free any more than they have done; which is enough... clearly you have never done software dev.

The only time D2's servers were ever shut down was when Battle.net was down or when they needed to be taken offline for maintenance.

And if they didn't do QoL updates you'd be bitching about them not being there and pointing to those very same mods as examples of what they should be doing.

Sure thing. Yeah the guy in the black shirt and beard was really into it. You could see his passion and I bet he spent many many hours as a kid like us playing it. Its good to see people with so much passion for the game working on it.

You know, I would have been excited for this before WC3 Remastered came out. Glad I didn't pre preorder that and I think I'll dodge the bullet on this one too.

It shouldn't be possible to screw up a D2 remaster, but modern Blizz finds ways to make the impossible...possible.

Blizzard: releases “Diablo” thing for D3

fans: rabble rabble! This sucks! Why isn’t it a separate game! Why does the frame rate suck? These graphics are lame!

Blizzard: releases Warcraft 3 remake

fans: this sucks! Do Diablo 2!

Blizzard: announces Diablo 2 remake

fans: lame! Total cash grab! Why’d they even bother?

D2 was definitely my first online genre. Thousands, and THOUSANDS of hours spent. I played on dialup too. I think it was an A2 Nightmare Merc I used with a legit Eth BOTD Warpike that I made.

I could see myself playing. I enjoy Path of Exile, but there's just so many options that I get overwhelmed. D2 seemed to be right in the sweet spot of builds, loot, and farming.

Was the SC remake even a "yay"? I thought outside of esport trash, that it was not terribly well received?

Maybe I'm wrong. Pirated it and played some of the campaign and then forgot about it.

Yea I fully expect them to do like they did to WC3, and lock down the game so that mods do not work with it, release it buggy and do only a few bug fixes before moving on from it.

No d2 servers are still up.

They have done some combining, and lessening server areas. However, it is still alive.

Psychologically I think it takes away peoples fantasy. Some can't deal with that.

I've never played it but I somehow have an original copy on my shelf, not sure where it came from.
Will it install on Windows 10?
IIRC it will install, but you'll need to manually download and install the latest patch for it to actually run.

I for one am excited for this and hope they port it to switch with couch coop. The couch coop on Switch Diablo 3 is the only game I can get her to play with me and I have fun too :p

Nope. All I needed to do when I installed it last night was run the game as Admin in order to get the in-game patcher to work.

It was diablo 1 and then quake 2 on dial up for me. Starcraft 1 in there too.

I did get D2 the day it released and played endless hours online tying up our only phone line. It was an amazing game.

At least for me, that was the last time blizzard made a truly good game. I wasn't interested in wow, didn't like the economy mechanics of wc3, SC2 was ok I guess and I found D3 so bad it was downright insulting. I'm ok with it being a different game. It just wasn't a good game.

So a remake of D2? Provided they don't screw it up I'm in.

I wrote off Blizzard somewhere in between Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3. They went from being one of my favorite game studios to me almost forgetting they exist.

I was so disappointed with Starcraft 2, I wanted a new game not Starcraft 1 in a new engine with new units. I preordered Diablo 3 and had fun for a little while but it got old really fast.

I’ll definitely try this, but just as definitely not till reviews come out due to the WC3 fiasco. It’s the first time I don’t have nearly blind faith in Blizzard games.

I put a lot of time in D2X 20 yrs ago. Not thousand(s) of hours but I’d guess around one thousand.

Wc3 fiasco was overblown. It's a great game that was derailed by people on a hate parade. It's trendy to want a refund on everything now and then complain when that means you can't have it for free.

I played the crap out of it at launch and I still sometimes do custom games, so I got my money's worth and then some.

Not the only game this happened to lately. Recently played through battlefront 2 and the jedi awakens which had massive complaints and found the games to be sublime. Cyberpunk too.

Nice. I tried, I dunno, 6 months ago, and it would crash, run as Admin or no, before getting to the title screen, so I had to do it manually. Worked fine after that, though.

I am so in for this. I think I must have spent 1000 hours playing d2 in college. I remember before the expansion that the best items were randomized rares dropped by Diablo- diabloii.net keep screen shots of the best random drops by item. It was awesome
Yep I remember this, although unfortunately what I recall happening is that the best ones were duped and became "the best" to have anyway. Not too far off from having a unique item being the best.

Still good times though.

i actually didn’t hate D3. But I played D1 as a kid too.

I’m in. I love all the blizzard franchises. Except overwatch. That shit was trash.

Launch D3 had a lot of problems, but most of it was fixed up around the time of the expansion. I find it to be incredibly fun now days, to the point where I doubled dipped on the game and picked up the Switch version when it released.

I really liked OW in it's early days. It wasn't well balanced, but it was fun and people kept finding fun ways to play the characters. Than all the eSports bullshit crept in and they started to too heavily nerf shit, taking away a lot of the fun.

Stones of Jordan got duped more than the best rares by far. I actually hope they change some of the crafting recipes to remove the reliance on Soj, or else it will be tough to make things without the huge stockpile of duped SoJs. Hopefully they return gambling to what it was in earlier iterations too.

I loved D3 launch but we were selling items in the RMAH. I was playing with a couple dudes in the barracks and we definitely earned some beer money playing. We quit before the expansion came out and I went back to DOTA/2

I just tried OW less than a year ago and it just didn’t click for me. War zone is a blast and it cracks me up I see blizzard is a subsidiary of that.

Items going for 100+ SOJs always cracked me up back in the day.... It was so obvious that they were duped to hell. It was still fun though. Key was to play the game on your own terms and find your own loot. If you weren't trying for epeen, not having 500 SOJs didn't matter.

The difficulty progression of D3 modes at launch was nuts, I think because the expectation was that everyone would gear up using the the RMAH. If you didn't use it you spent quite a while getting punked every time you went up a difficulty level. Good times I thought. RMAH wasn't good times though, glad they removed it.
