my evga x58 micro is HOT. it runs almost 80C in bios, which is like below idle. im pretty sure its the reason i cant get prime to run even at 4.0 even though i can boot fine at 4.5 on 1.35V. so i need a bigger and possibly active nb cooler. any suggestions? i have a cooler master V8 so i dont have a lot of room. i think i can fit an HR-05 but no fan on it. shouldnt need it though.

my question is what do people recommend, and if there are any black coolers, as the all shiny aluminum would really look bad in my case. im quite vain. gonna try applying new TIM and reseating, but if that fails ill be getting a NB cooler. thanks guys!
 
ummm
1: check EVGA forums to see of other people report high CPU temps when in the bios and looking at CPU temp. In new boards it is not uncommon for the sensors to be badly miscalibrated.

2: If the sensor is not know to be way off, you ahve a heatsink mounting issue. 80C cpu temp is way too hot.

3: Since the memory controller is no longer in the IOH/Northbridge but instead embedded in the cpu I doubt it is the source of the issues running prime.

wow what a xexy looking board. The heatsinks provided are more than sufficient if you have good case airflow. A spot fan should be more than sufficient. I think a remount being super careful nothing interferes with the heatsink mounting will solve your issue.

What does Realtemp say at idle and during a prime run at 4.0GHz ?
 
yes it is a sexy board! unfortunately that NB heat sink is burning hot to the touch even at idle. i have 2 yate loon high speeds doing intake and another one exhausting. the heat sink is just too short. its not getting any airflow shielded by the video card and the ram/ram fan i have. plus, the fins are pointing up and down, and the airflow is front to back. i cant see that its doing much good at all. is there something i can use to check the NB temp in windows?

the cpu is strugglin too. at idle its 40-43C depending on the core. at load i have been getting to 90C. im running p95 now, and after 3 minutes of blend 2 workers have stopped (5 and 6) and my temps have stabilized around 87C, except for core 3 which is at 67 and is the one that failed. should i rma my cpu for a bad core? those 2 workers have been nothing but trouble the whole time ive been trying to stabilize this thing. all my specs will be in sig in a sec, i need to update.
 
ok so when i had all the fans on minimum on my fan controller, it stabilized at 87C on the cpu. now it wont make it 5 seconds without crashing when the fans are on full power. ?

EDIT: power MIGHT be an issue. extreme power supply calculator tells me to get at least a 480W psu, and thats before OCing my 5770s. mine has 432W on the +12V rail and 600W total. idk if the recommended is for the 12V rail only or for the total so i may or may not be ok. would a single 5850 use less power than xfire 5770s? im thinking about downgrading, as xfire is turning out to be just as annoying as i remember.

Try running just one of the 5770's underclocked and see if you still ahve the problem.
Though still, 80c on the chipset?? that's a bit toasty.
