Bitcoin Discussion Thread Part 2

Hmm how long does it take cgminer to make a failover switch? Apparently simplecoin died about 10 minutes ago, so I waited about 5 minutes for it to switch over to my backup and it never did, so I switched it over manually.

It was down for 10min? It looked like it was back up after 3-4.

The sql server was restarted, I'm still trying to get to the bottom of it.

Well, down for a good 5 for me. I manually switched after 5, so maybe it came back up right after that.

But still, the question remains, how long does it take for cgminer to switch over? 5 minutes seems like a long time. I'm wondering if I have something configured wrong, though it seems like all you have to do is add a second pool to the config string and it will handle the rest automagically.

guess no OC'ing for me then :(. Guess I'll just stick with my 750 mhash. Was getting 800+ with OC.

Hmm this deal makes the 6870 a good alternative over the largely unavailable 5830.

XFX 6870 + Dirt3 + Deus Ex + Shogun2 coupons - $12 discount code: HARDOCPX817B - $30 rebate + Free shipping = $154.99

If you can sell all 3 game codes for at least $40 or so you are coming in well under the price of a new (or used for that matter) 5830. I figure the 6870 should have much better resale value than the 5830 while consuming less power as well and if the card has a lifetime warranty that sweetens the deal even more.

All 4 of my XFX 6870s ram would not underclock at all. The cores however overclocked to about 975 stable for me. Once I went past that I didn't really notice much of a change in my hashes, only more heat. I'm getting 302mhash/s steady per card.

I consider that a pretty good deal on the cards. I paid $180 and only received Dirt 3. You can probably pawn off each game for $20 and make the cards only $95. Just remember it is 3 redemptions per name. So after the 3rd card registered to your name you stop receiving game codes.

Wow. The network total went up for a change. Looks like the next difficulty swing might be going back up. Oh well...

I'm trying to unlock the shaders on my 6950 but atiflash cannot be opened. Says that its not compatible with the version of windows that I am running. I'm running windows 7 pro sp1 64 bit. I actually had the same exact problem trying to install the software for my new xfi card. Still using the sound driver from microsoft.

Time for a reformat?

About a year. Had a lot of crashes pre sp1. Now not so much. But it does still happen a lot. I really wish I could fine the cause of the crashes. But it's always something different that crashes.

Is there any benefit to distributing your mining power over multiple pools?

Its somewhat of a diversification play. Like buying GE vs SPY - you'll more likely hit the average of the bitcoing mining return if you're in several pools, but you'll miss out on a lot of gains if one pool has a winning streak over another.

Not really, unless you are really worried about a pool going down. In which now, a lot of miner programs allow you to setup backup pools in case your main pool goes down.

Just choose one with the payout system that you like and that has the lowest(or 0) fees.

Depends. If you're in smaller pools, it should help even out the earnings (but it also dillutes your shares in each, so you would lose out on half of a bonanza like we had last week on simplecoin). If you're in a larger pool, you're finding blocks often enough that it doesn't really have an effect.

If you run two clients on each card, it can be kind of a poor man's failover. So if one pool dies, the other client just hashes at full speed.

I wouldn't flash the cards within Windows. You're asking for failure then.

I was never able to get dos atiflash to work on my newer cards, I had to use a clean windows install to get them to work.

I can't speak for the amd 6000 series but I've always used atiflash in dos for amd hd 4000 & 5000 series. I've used it to set custom overclocks and fan profiles w/o having to run an additional program. Well, can't do it with the 5800 series because the driver will override the fan profiles.

I flashed both of my 6950s with ATiFlash through Windows. Had no problems unlocking the shaders with the modded BIOS.

Same here (1 6950). As long as you have a card that supports unlocking the shaders, it should be easy as pie.

tsd, I just PM'd you about a critical matter relating to my simplecoin account.

Does anyone know a better way to reach him?
