100Mhash/s using only 6.8Watts @ $440. Still a bit slow compared to a video card but the Mhash/J is pretty impressive. The boards are also software upgradeable.

Argh, my miner script automatically put me back on BTC Guild when they couldn't connect to simplecoin last night and I missed the last block!

I know past luck is no indicator of future performance but them's the breaks. TSD, your pool has been so incredibly lucky this week! :)
 
It would take too long to pay off. When you could get a 5830 for $150(*added inflation) that does 300mhash at 150w. 3 FPGA would do 300mhash at 20.4w for $1320 just to save you ~$8/month in electricity. The power savings are not worth it at that price point.

1 month 300mhash FPGA 20.4w = ~$1.40 in electricity(@.10/kwh)
1 month 300mhash 5830 150w = ~$10.80 in electricity(@.10/kwh)

If FPGAs coudl ever get into the sub $100 price point, then they would be much more worth it.

He thinks he can get them up to 150-200 mhash which makes the payoff better. I still think your conclusion is right though.
 
Yup, way too expensive but they are planning a bulk order soon so that should help the price a little. That $440 price tag is for the first 4 development boards they are selling now.

These can also be seen as a long term investment preparing for future difficulty increases when Mhash/J becomes the most important metric to consider. Though there is also the hidden risk of new video cards coming which could render these utterly obsolete.

It is priced too high, but also worth noting, it does not appear to use a PCIE slot, so you could stick A LOT of these on 1 MB and it could use a USB connection or something since mining uses very little bandwidth.

Where there is money, there is a way...
 
Yeah all they require is a 4-pin molex a usb connector and a xillinx platform cable. The thing is tiny, it can fit in the palm of your hand. Someone could design a nice little stackable plastic casing around it and you're good to go.
 
I'm getting MySQL errors at Simplecoin again.

Yes ^ just noticed. Last time it went down, my miners automatically switched to BTC Guild and I missed out on a super fast block lol. I don't know what to do. I'll keep watching this thread for TSD.
 
The sql server died, just went down completely.

The backup is already back online. Sorry for the downtime.

That said, for critical server failure, a few minutes isn't bad.... is it?

No, I was more mad at myself for my scripts not bringing me back to Simplecoin when Simplecoin went down yesterday and I lost out on one or two quick blocks completely and I didnt' want a repeat.

Is that 4 blocks this week? Wow! I wish I had started on here 7 days ago :( That would have been 60 BTC instead of 10.

Thank-you for all your hard work. I'm permanently pointing 75% of my miners at you. The website stats aren't updating yet though?

No, I had to repoint/restart the replication servers. All of our stats are run on replication, so it doesn't affect the pool. Give them 10 minutes, they'll come back.

That is obviously a great advantage, but at $440 a pop for only 100mhash, the pricing is not right yet.

For $1200, you could have a rig with 1200 mhash worth of 5830s @ ~750w for $43.20 in electricity/month

or

For $5880, you could have a rig with 1200mhash worth of FPGAs @ ~82w for $17.28 in electricity/month

At this price point, there is no reason anybody should buy these for nothing other than the cool factor. Or maybe they don't see the FPGA price going down anytime soon and are in it for the long run.

Depending on how fast difficulty will ramp up, we'll probably have to to turn to FPGA in a year's time if it becomes affordable. Hopefully prices will be down by then. The problem also with FPGA is that it's a lot of hardware that serves no secondary purpose and has no resale value outside of the Bitcoin market.
 
Anyone know of a way to run ultiple instances of the same extension in Chrome?

I have a bitcoin app that pulls data from all my API,s but I cant only display 1 type of data at a time, either my total reward, hashrate, or connected miners.. I would like to run 3 instances so I can do 1 of each at all times.. Anyone know how?
 
Well I know know what the upside is for simple coin, each day next week I'll have another GPU arriving at the house to load up :D

I love that extension, but I don't know of a way to do what you want.

However, you could use btc-poolwatch.com and achieve what you want.

Yeah, I saw that site a few posts up and when ahead and jumped on it.. I just like the convenience of seeing it in the browser at all times. I wouldnt even mind if it was a full length toolbar.

Which would put the breakeven point between the two options over a decade into the future. In a decades time bitcoin could well have died completely and even if it hasn't there will most likely have been great advances in mining hardware that render current mining hardware (both GPU and FPGA) uncompetitive.

The bottom line is even if you are in it for the long haul the FPGA miner is a stupid buy at that price.
 
I havent been able to get my miners to connect to simple coin all day.. Anyone else having issue..

I just logged into my mining rigs and they are mining deepbit and Simple coin at the same time, did this so DB would be at 100% and then 50/50 when SC came back up, but all my miners say connection issue, however my hashrate shows its doubled like it is mining.. a machine that does 900 normally is showing 1800... My stats on SC are not updating to reflect a hash rate.
