BioShock Infinite

I don't think you have to be American or know anything of American history to understand/enjoy the plot - the racism, religious fanaticism, etc is found in so many other cultures and is a familiar theme. It's funny to me that the reaction has been so polarizing - the game is unbelievable in my opinion. Really really loved it.

Well, actually, you need to know about the Wounded Knee massacre and general of a militia, Custer (yes, he was no US Army general, he had this rank only in militia, and was total military cretin, who should not be given a single platoon, speaking not of the full 7th cavalry) , to understand Booker.

And there are a lot of little things you couldn't appreciate if you didn't know any American history (the area with the statue of John Wilkes Booth, the painting of Lincoln, etc). All of that helps to create the atmosphere of Columbia. It helps you understand just how crazy it all is.

I'm not quite sure you had to know much about either Wounded Knee or the other battle (which I've forgotton now..), only how it motivated Booker to make an important decision. I agree that a knowledge of all this is probably helpful in bringing context to things, but I don't think it's a prerequisite.

Hand canon didn't hold enough bullets for me. Used carbine and sniper rifle mostly.

Carbine was my favorite alt. all the way. I guess it was about 50/50 with that and the canon depending on situations. The sniper rifle was probably...90 percent constant once I could get it.

This game is weird for reasons. It's political and religious.

Welcome to Bioshock.

1999 mode is challenging, but after a while you get used to it. I was killed by snipers nearing Comstock house, but I had played for hours and I was exhausted.

I would say all the themes with Lincoln, racism, etc., are just used to create the city and it's inhabitants. It gives reason for certain events and how some things play out, but that's not why people are giving it 10/10.

I could be wrong though.

SO MAD i started in 1999 mode.... I'm in that house now with the two people talking about negros and I can't get past it at all. that fire guys murders me and the auto guns just rape me to all hell.

Can they be destroyed?

I'm going to start over on medium because I'm already not having fun.

I don't recommend playing in 1999 mode your first play through. I'm on my second play through in 1999 and I kinda know how to beat the tough areas. If you're having a really tough time you probably don't have the right weapons equipped.

However, there were a couple of areas that I didn't know how to finesse. Not attacking an area "right" makes the experience really difficult. I also died a couple of times in that area. I distracted the fireman by possessing the gun turrets and/or distracting him with murder of crows. I would then go for criticals with a carbine or spam him with a volley gun. To get away you have to use the hooks.

I started my first game on 1999 mode and am really enjoying the challenge. Yes, I get frustrated and rage-quit. I'm still at the part where you run into the first handyman, but I keep coming back for more pain :D

I kind of disagree with you. The atmosphere is what makes the game. Take away all that stuff and what do you have? A mediocre shooter.

From the very moment you enter Columbia and hear of the three Fathers, American history is a center piece.

When I encountered him in that area and dying twice, I booked the hell outta there into the next objective. I fought him on the return trip.

In some areas the difficulty does approach cheap. Imagine taking fire and hiding behind a building. Peek from one corner to draw fire (can't see where the enemies are). Now run to the other corner. I've seen fire BEFORE reaching the corner.

i think i am nearing the end, absolutely amazing so far... better then i could have expected.

i find myself emotionally invested in Elizabeths future, if that isnt a good game idk what is

Sort of. As I said it does create the world and given reason to things. But that's not why I love the game. It lends to a lot of added detail which helps create a living world, but that's not my focus when I'm playing, that's not where the bulk of my enjoyment came from.

My focus is on the visually stunning environments and the Booker - Elizabeth relationship. It's all I cared about in the end.

I don't think I would consider it a mediocre shooter either. Just given the mostly open areas with sky lines and the different vigors you have a myraid of different ways to dispatch your enemies.

Spec Ops: The Line is a mediocre shooter minus it's story, that brings nothing to the table gameplay/shooter wise.

Your dumb ass was on steam and in game for what felt like 48 hours. I don't think I saw you log off once. Better damn like the game, hah.

I think I have about 12 hours in and I have no idea how far I am into the game, but it's still pretty amazing. I think Hard is the ideal difficulty for me. I've died quite a few times, and I think if it were any harder it would be frustratingly so. If I do another playthrough I may or may not do 1999 mode, I dunno.

The "waves" of enemies fighting can get kind of repetitive sometimes, but god damn it is fun fighting in the large open arenas with the skylines weaving all over the place. Especially against the Handyman. I remember the first time I fought one, their size and speed just made me go OH SHIT and I was scrambling from skyhook to skyhook trying to get distance between us. Definitely a tense situation with those guys, and they hit HARD. Love it.

Like someone was saying, some of the Vigors they introduce way too late in the game and some of them you barely ever use. I think they could have made them work better against certain types of enemies. Like the Undertow one, I don't ever really see a reason to use it over something like the Bronco. The Return to Sender is pretty cool but, again, you might as well just use something else. It works pretty well against the Motorized Patriot's crank gun, though.

Also, what happened to the "Boys of Silence" or whatever? I still haven't seen them.

use Undertow to force push NPCs into the sky

I always enjoyed using the undertow to launch guys over the sides of platforms.

That's what Bronco does...(better, even)

Ahh, yeah that could work. Kind of situational, and again you could basically do the same thing with Bronco by shooting them a bit over the edge and letting them fall.

oh i just leave it running.. i probably have like 6-7 hours of actually game time dude haha.

the save system blows huge dick so i have been just leaving it on.

I never tried the bronco one, lol.

My favorite one was always the crows, especially when a bunch of guys run into a crow trap. Then I pop out and shotgun them all down.

I actually barely use the Vigors on Hard mode...well, maybe not barely but I do constantly get pop-ups like "Remember to use your Vigors!".

Mostly I roll with Bronco, Shock Jockey and sometimes Devil's Kiss. Rarely will use Possession or Crows but Bronco and Shock are the most useful ones so far IMO.

I mostly use Devil's Kiss and Shock Jockey...have also upgraded both of them at vending machines to do more damage...plus extended my Salt Infusion to make them last longer...really makes them very, very powerful

also use Gear which enhances Melee strikes and other powers...overall you can build a pretty powerful Dewitt

Maybe I'm just weird, too, but I rarely ever use the sniper rifle so far as well. I use it for the few instances where they throw it in your face and have guys really far off, but a lot of the time it's too difficult to aim with on skylines and a lot of the guys will quickly get right up in your face. I find it's not suited to most of the combat situations so far.

I like the sniper rifle a lot, it's incredibly powerful, and really accurate. Obviously not on the skylines, but still.

Off-topic: Anyone getting that pop-up add right in their face whenever you go to a different page on this site? What the flying fuck...

Anybody have issues with the mouse in this game? It feels just a tad sluggish (input lag) just like the first bioshock game. I have vsync disabled and mouse acceleration off.

I find the pacing of battles in this game...off. Like there are big sections of the game where they could have had some people to battle. Sure, you can explore. And loot, etc. But there were quite a few sections that feel...empty for a sprawling aerial city supposedly on edge with your arrival.

There was one section in the game early on, after you get the sky-hook ability where you can side-track and go into someone's house. You explore and loot and find some stuff, but other than that it was pretty empty. I thought it would have been great if after you had arrived and explored and such if the owners suddenly returned to you in their house and attacked you.

Again, I've never been a big fan of the first and second games. The third game is a big improvement, but it still has issues of its own.

skyline fighting is fun, but hard is definitely hard..i find myself and knew i was gonna die a few times and almost raged quit a few times on this game. The auto-save feature is nice and all but sometimes when i was drained from this game it was getting my nerves that the auto-save points weren't to my liking and i had to re-do quite patriot and sub-boss battles again since i didn't know it didn't auto-save after i defeated them.

Glenn Becks website did an analysis of the game and whetehr or not it truly is a dig on the Tea party. Supposed to be an interesting read since Conservative outlets generally shy away from critiquing games. I'm still reading so I can't comment yet.

http://www.theblaze.com/stories/201...robo-george-washington-should-you-be-worried/

I'm a Tea Party guy, and I like Beck and The Blaze, but it's clear they're going a bit sensationalist on this one(as I'm sad to say the right-wing blogosphere and Fox News are wont to do). Here's the quote that answers the headline:

Naturally, the creators denied any intent to specifically attack Rand, arguing instead that their general intent was to criticize extremism of all stripes. And considering that the first game treats Andrew Ryan (who isn’t even the main villain of the original Bioshock) with far more sympathy than it treats the all-but-explicitly communist villain of Bioshock 2, Sofia Lamb, who willingly traumatizes her own daughter and leaves a trail of corpses behind her in her pursuit of a utopian society, one could argue that the series had been comparatively right-leaning up until Infinite.

So now they lean left, and the series balances out. Not that big a story.

Yeah the save system is a huge negative. I hate having to click "Quit" and then make sure the save is within the last 5 minutes or so, lest I lose 30+ minutes of progress.

I've probably been playing it for about 18 hours at this point (more as a matter of reloading from save points rather than taking a death 95% of the time.

this is actually the best way to do it if you have the patience, that way you're not draining all your cash and ammo away every time you get stuck in unwinnable situations.

problem with 1999 and basically the whole penalty system for death in this game is, they're punishing you not by impeding your immediate progress, but the progress of the entire game. every time you die you're losing significant chunks of cash that you will never get back ($100 for 1999, $75 for hard, etc), thus losing upgrades and vigor aids that you'll never get to experiment with. something to consider if you don't want to blow through it your first time around.

also the nav aid is extremely useful, another thing they take away here. not so you know where to go, but where not to go. without it you end up triggering events that you would want to avoid while exploring, and lose hints on which areas are made to be detours and probably have hidden stuff.

So you're the one. That guy is a fucking idiot.

Another thing is, when I get an "optional" objective, like "Find the cypher" or "Find the box the key opens" or something, I've almost never been able to find these things. I feel like I've been exploring pretty thoroughly but beyond the first safe that you backtrack for, I don't think I've ever completed another optional quest. Do these come back way later? Because when I leave the area that I'm in, they disappear off my objectives list.

Also, nearly every area, when exiting, will have Elizabeth or something indicating that you can "never go back" once you progress. Just makes the game feel incredibly linear and like you have to spend hours running around the same areas trying to find stuff. I'm all for exploration but it reaches a point where it gets repetitive and boring.

Just finished it. Damn. Mind blown.
I didn't think I would be so satisfied. But I still want more!
Beat on 1999 mode.

To be fair though, 1999 mode is supposed to be unlocked after you have already beaten the game. By then, you would know exactly how the game plays, what to do etc etc. The only way to get 1999 mode unlocked before beating the game is by using the code, so if it's your first run-through while doing 1999 mode, it's at your own risk. Despite that, 1999 is still ez IMO and I am pretty sure i'm near the end. The only challenge 1999 mode is from the handyman, they are pretty tough on this mode.

Regardless, I agree about the whole vigor/upgrade thing though, you should be able to max everything out no matter what mode.

i kind of regret not playing normal now though i love me some challenge. i want to max all my upgrades. if only they had a new game + option where you can max your stuff out that would be pretty sweet. I don't know if i wanna do 1999 mode since you can only focus on a select few weapons and vigors to use in order to optimize your play through.
