Bios not saving settings

I'm in the middle of overclocking an E4300 on a Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3. The problem I'm running into is that 3/4 of the time my BIOS is turning off my changes. I'll make my FSB and voltage changes, choose the save & exit option from the menu and restart. I'll load up windows and it will be showing the default 9*200mhz. I'll reboot and go into the BIOS and my changes will still be there, but 'CPU Host clock controller' will be set to 'disabled' effectively negating any changes I had made. The really strange thing is that every once in a while it will work, and I can't tell that I'm doing anything different between the times it works and the times it doesn't. Does anyone have any idea of what I might be doing wrong?

No clue what you are setting wrong, Be aware if you set something the computer cannot handle it will do what you describe on purpose. It will during reboot determine your settings cannot past the POST (power on self test) requirements and it will disable your OCing setting and boot with stuff reset to defaults.

Here is a guide with the the common OCing settings for the bios, pay close attention as to how to set your memory timings and voltage to YOUR specs.

Then
set your cpu mulitplier to 7
set your FSB to 400
set memory divider to 2.0
and you should be able to boot at 2.8GHz
Test your hardware and check your temps.
if all ok
set your cpu mulitplier to 8 and try 3.2GHz

put some air on the NB/MCH heatsink.

I get the feeling that's what it's doing. The problem is, I'm not doing anything the computer shouldn't be able to handle. Even a 5mhz bump up on the FSB resets it. I read through that other thread and there doesn't seem to be anything there that I'm doing differently.

I know what its doing. Ok RMA it, then post back when the same thing happens with the new board.

I would like to help you help yourself but my crystal ball apparently is broken, normally I can gaze into it and sprinkle the blood of a dead chicken on my Gigabyte manual and tell extactly what you have done during the build, read every bios setting and get specs for your specific hardware, what settings do work, what you are trying to change and the idle and load temps per coretemp on your best stable configuration. I must be losing my touch, I an going to install a tool and see if that helps. http://www.strangehorizons.com/2004/20040405/badger.shtml

Interesting, I just found this post in that other thread.

No idea why, but you are not the first person to have issues, the board seems not to like USB drives. I dont use one so I have no way to test etc.
This sounds exactly like what's happening to me and I do have an external USB HDD connected to the PC. I'll try it without it plugged in tonight.

Keep us posted, as I am looking to buy a case for my IDE 120GB drive and make it external.

Success! I haven't turned up the FSB yet, but it did boot and load windows with the baseline configurations, which is more than I've got it to do so far.

I tested it at 266*9 and got 30 degrees C idle with both EZTune and Speedfan and 52 degrees under load for EZTune and 47 degrees for Speedfan. For some reason neither Core Temp or TAT will run. I know Speedfan is inaccurate. How accurate is Easy Tune?
