Okay here is my post from the processor thread:
Okay, so I have an old pc. Just ordered a gtx 260 for it. It has an nforce 405 mcp61sm-am with a 64 bit 3800. Can this mobo take a dual core processor? If so, What kind?

My question here is... How do I flash the mobo to unlock it? I know it can be done I just dont know how.

If your bios supports it this should work. You will have to search around to find out if the most recent bios for your mobo supports AM2+ sockets or not.

AMD Athlon X2 7850 Black Edition

Your biggest problem is the PSU. I am guessing that this is an Acer T180. If it is the stock 250w psu will not even run the gtx 260 and adding a dual core on top of that will not make things better.

Anyone? I have never flashed a bios before. There has to be a first for everything. It seems as if everybody has their own way of doing it. I just need somebody to tell me step for step what to do.

And dont bother writing anything if you are going to tell me not to do it. :p

There is no exe. I am trying to do it from dos though using something self bootable thing. I am getting tired sorry if I dont make much sense. I have a bin and a couple sys files.

Either follow the directions in the manual that came with your motherboard or go to the motherboard manufacturer's website for the latest bios and directions. The reason is that there are several ways to flash a motherboard's bios and you need to do it the way they recommend.

right. go to their website and follow their instructions step by step.
they will usually have two ways to flash, one via a boot disk/utility and another with an application installed in windows.
the application is the easier way to go.

I have an ECS GeForce6100M-M v. 2.0 with that same nForce 405 chipset, and it runs a dual core Athlon 4800+ with no problems.

Some mobos won't allow flashing until you move a jumper or change a setting in the BIOS setup.

Don't flash if the system is overclocked or unstable or if any hardware has been changed recently. Don't flash right away even if you simply un-overclock it -- first run the system for a day or two that way, to make sure everything is perfect (MemTest86).

Make an emergency self-booting CD, USB stick, or floppy disk, in case the flash goes wrong and you have to do a boot block flash, and include the flash program and BIOS file and an AUTOEXEC.BAT file to automatically flash the BIOS.

Maybe your first attempt at running the flash program should simply back up the BIOS to a file.

go to the support website for you mobo to download latest bios. you can read updated files on what your new bios does. just be carefull while updating!
