Bionic Commando bombs at retail

1.) The game didn't catch my eye and/or give me any indication that it would be better/different from any other game in that market segment

2.) Average review scores, however, given the current economic climate I can only afford to spend money on games that are truly above average.

3.) If I WAS to buy a new action game it would be Infamous (although I won't buy that either right now - see no 2)

Too bad. There were a lot of high hopes for this game and it simply ended up being mediocre.

^^ What does that consensus tell you?

Infamous is way above average very easily. Frankly, it's a system seller as far as the PS3 is concerned. If you love action games and own a PS3 there's no excuse to not own this gem. The demo was just a tip of a much larger and better iceburg.

You ought to run out and buy it immediately.

Never heard of it. That can't be a good sign for their marketing/sales figures.

I'm really not sure how this is possible. Bionic Commando was well covered by the gaming media and I saw plenty of ads for it, at least on websites and in print.

In any event, the game is rightfully bombing because it simply isn't that good.

The demo is the reason I didn't buy it.

I couldn't get the demo to work. It just sat at a connecting screen doing... nothing... I'm a single player gamer, so I don't care too much about multi-player. I was really looking forward to this game, too...

someday I'll get it. But i"m not dropping $60 on a game that the demo doesn't even work on.

I wouldn't be surprised Bionic Commando Rearmed does better than this completely new Bionic Commando in the long run.

I heard about the mysterious hidden ultraradiation that makes you follow some arbitrary path...

And promptly decided I would gamefly the game to see if it was really that horrid and not buy it.

I loved the old game, I loved rearmed. I'm not sure about this one.

The demo killed it. I have no idea what they were trying to show off with the demo, but it was just a confusing mess that was multiplayer only for a (primarily) single player game. All of the hype shortly before release turned into a ton of negative press about how wretched and unplayable the demo was. I knew a few people interested in the game and not a single person bought it after playing the demo or hearing people talk about the demo. The point of a demo is to show off the good stuff and get people hooked. The BC devs ended up showing off the worse by throwing people into a multiplayer situation with no tutorial level or anything to get started with. Heck, people at the local Gamestop were even cancelling per orders. This is one of the first times I can remember where a demo was in such poor shape it caused a game to tank at retail.

I enjoyed it. The voice overs were bad, but game play was pretty good. Certainly not the best, but solid. I bought it, and inFamous the same day, beat BC first. inFamous is a much, much better game, but its better than 95% of the games out there right now, imo.

If you find it cheap, Id get it, if you enjoy this type of game.

Maybe somebody should tell these game companies that screwing up classic games by adding 3D and XTREME new play mechanics will just ruin them.

I loved the NES BC, I still have it.

Well the fact is, most of the games are 3D now. They did re-release the classic version, with updated 2D graphics. And Mario 64 seemed to do very well going to 3D... Where are the "XTREME" play mechanics. Its basically the same thing, swing around and shoot.

Yeah, you don't get it.

I remember seeing ads and previews aplenty leading up to launch.

Absolutely nothing about the ads or previews made me even remotely interested. Bad marketing when they can't even get an avid gamer to read more than one paragraph of a preview.

Well it shouldve been on the wii. Im glad it bombed.

Yeah, an already mediocre game with scaled down graphics and the gimmicky Wii motion controls. Whoopie.

They did you a favor not bringing the likes of that to the Wii.

wow i remember reading about this game month's ago and looking forward to it.
didn't even know it was finally released.

covered yes, but not as much recently. I didn't even realize it was coming out.

I've been wanting a Wii but posts like this always make me cringe. Are Nintendo the only ones that make good Wii games?

A friend swears by this game, but I haven't even tried the demo (if there's one for the PS3?) after seeing some reviews. The "magical path through the radiation" is what killed it for me.

Got Infamous [as a present] instead :)

No, hating on the wii is the new cool thing to do. You remember how it was religion for a little while? Now its the wii

New cool thing? People have been talking bad about the Wii here and elsewhere since the day it came out. If Nintendo didn't think there was a hardcore gaming backlash against the Wii, they wouldn't address it in every interview.

As for BC, like everyone else, I hated the demo. Plus, it also came out at a time when lots of other console games were hitting. A bad demo and getting lost in the shuffle killed it.

Ha, you said "BC"!!

I love the original (still play it once a year, beat it in an hour :) There has never been a game quite like it, so when I heard about the new game I was excited. Visions of Metroid Prime swam through my head.

But then the reviews arrived, and I just couldn't bring myself to do it. I might try it out if it shows up on Steam some day fortwenty bucks, but I'm not paying $50 for a game so universally panned.

Yep. Yahtzee tore this a new one b/c the game deserved it. The momentum slowdown was weird, but workable. However... The ambiguous radiation zones was ridiculous, the writing was the typical Capcom absurdity (ala Resident Evil) with lots of "F" bombs mixed in, and the plot twist with the wife was the icing on a generally shitty cake.

Though Pepsi doesn't piss me off as much as it does to Yahtzee :p
