If you read the specs of my machine below you'll agree it's power consumption is nothing to be sneezed at.... the problem is... I'm running out of space AGAIN with less than 50GB free, i'm considering using up my sata plugs on my ICH8R in a 4x1TB raid 5.... when i get my new giant Lian Li V2000 next week obviously....

the problem i'm facing is that I don;t want to put undue stress on my PSU, as it was quite expensive and burning it out is something I definately don't want to do... i've found a Corsair 750W psu for real cheap that I want to run in parallel with my Silverstone, i plan to do this by crossing the green+black wire with insulated wire...

am i being overzealous with this? or is my SilverStone 750W going to handle 15 HDD's (one is a 10000rpm raptor i use for XP which is hardly ever plugged in) a 8800GTX and perhaps a future upgrade to a x38/quad-core... i have serious doubts and if i'm at risk.. id much rather invest in this second PSU... and do a quick mod to my new Lian Li case

I plan on using the corsair 750w for ALL of the harddrives (as this is wayyyy more important to me than my other hardware) and the silverstone in now a more limited role than before only running the cpu/mobo/gfx

I'm about to cry thinking about my new boot time....

any thoughts/suggestions appreciated
 
Can your RAID cards do staggered spin-up? If so, no need to add that second PSU.
 
The SilverStone PSU will not handle 15 drives unless you can do staggered spin-up. I had that very same one and it would not power on with more than 13 drives because all the drives were on the same 18A rail. I run my server off a 610w PC P&C as it uses a large single rail, but I would recommend getting a slightly more powerful version as you have a high end video card. The Corsair 750w PSU will be more than adequate to run your entire system, so stick with that. I wouldn't bother with multiple power supplies personally.

well i know the Areca raid card has all sorts of stagger options.. timing and whatnot.. not sure about the ICH8R though...

Really, there's that much of a build difference between the Corsair and the SilverStone?? LOL.. the Corsair was about $100 cheaper (silverstone cost me AU$200)... im still a bit concerned about about running everything off the one 750W tho.. I'll have a closer look at ur server when I get home, and see exactly how much stress you're putting on your PSU...

Well I don't know what else to do with this SilverStone now.. maybe i should build another rig... i really dont think putting it on my P4-3GHz/fx5700 or my Sempron2600+/onboard gives it justice LOL..

I guess I'll just have to check if the ICH8R does staggered when i get home.

I'm just speaking from experience. Note the silverstone PSU in the bottom right corner of the picture. Both PSUs are high quality, it's just design differences between the two (single rail vs multi-rail) that separate them. Your setup is very similar to mine though...V2000 series case, over a dozen drives, an Areca RAID card, etc. If it comes down to it, you can just sell the silverstone PSU. As for 750w not being enough, you could probably run it off a 650w PSU if you wanted. With a single video card, you really don't need that much power.

so that's my psu there right? what's it hooked up to? cas if it's nothing I fear both of ours shall share a similar fate... :D

nah.. i have some kind of near mental disfucntion, which doesn't let me sell things I bought for myself... i'll find a use for it.

yeah i don't want to be running near capacity at all, but i guess a 100w buffer would be enough..

but then you run it through the psu calc and it turns up well over 1000

he he.. i was looking at your setup, and the routing of the hdd data/power cables is almost musical :D.. but then you look at around the PSU and it looks like bed-hair... that's exactly how i feel about the cabling on my SilverStone ;)
