Hello everyone...

Im about one week from having the $$ to get a new V.Card...Ive been lurking around these forums for a few days (since a buddy of mine introduced me to this place) and have read some extremely informative posts. Unfortunately, I dont know about 95% of what you guys are talkin about, heh. I dont know too much about computers but I DO know, I love to game on them.

Anywayss....I currently have a GeForce 5200FX and as you guys know, this is an old card (even though I just got it last year). I AM going to get the 7800gtx line this time, but cannot make up my mind as to which card is better/reliable as well as which will afford me a few years of NOT having to upgrade....

Asus or BFG?

BTW, my current 5200 card is an Asus....Back, before I bought it, I had read up about Asus products and was sold on their quality of product, cause to me quality is everything..But, after lurking here for a few days...now im confused. No one talks about Asus but everyone talks about BFG and eVGA....and even XFX (which really amazed me cause I "heard" that XFX is suxor....

Another question I have is......This SLI I keep reading about....to me, it has no meaning other than it allows you to use 2 cards at the same time...Do the cards have to be the same? i.e. 2 7800's....Can I use a 6800 (SLI capable of course) as well as a 7800? And along with that question, do they have to be the same brand..i.e. 2 Asus cards or 2 BFG cards?

Sorry if this is a lame set of questions, but as I said, I dont know too much about computers, but am willing and wanting to learn....

Please, if ya use acronyms, please state what that acronym actually stands for, please!!

TIA for your time and replies.....

you can use cards from diff manufactuers in SLI, but they have to be the same type (ie, a 6 series wont work with a 7 series, and a 7800gtx wont work with a 7800gt)

BFG's RMA dept is much, much better than Asus's, and i would recomend them over Asus, even though i just had some trouble wtih them. they DID get the problem solved, and were helpful.

i would recomend eVGA over either. they make the reference cards for Nvidia, so they defiantly know what theyre doing, and they carry lifetime warranties, like BFG... difference being that they even warrant HSF changes and overclocking, provided there is no physical damage to the graphics board/GPU.

I would get eVGA personally since they have low prices and a lifetime warrenty. But BFG is pretty much just as good as eVGA and also have a lifetime warrenty. ASUS isn't bad either, but their cards are overpriced, and for no good reason either.

As for SLI, currently you have to use the same model of cards (i.e. 7800GTX with 7800GTX, not 7800GT with 7800GTX) but they can be from different companies and do not have the have the same clock speeds . . . (which is much improved from earlier when you had to have same company + same BIOS!!)

EDIT: LOL, lithium726 beat me to it . . . XD

Are 100% sure about eVGA warranting HSF changes? I watercool my stuff and I am nervous about voiding the warranty on a $400 video card by putting a waterblock on it.

Yes eVGA warrants for HSF changes, as mentioned as long as you don't damage the GPU . . . (I'm using an NV Silencer on mine)

BFG does not, BTW.

Yeah, I just found that out on their website, edited my last post lol . . .

I forgot to mention the trade-up program. While the prices on the site are expensive, it's still something BFG doesn't offer . . .

Thank You for the almost instant replies, heh....

lithium726 - Ive read a few of your posts just recently. sorry to hear about your problems, must have really s..err was really bad. Whats an RMA? Thru the context clues, I guess its the Return department at said manufacturer???

I'll have to look into the eVGA stuff, as ive never really gave them a 2nd thought but I guess now I will. I thought graphics looked good on a 5200, I cant imagine them being better, which im sure they will be, but using 2 7800's.....WOW...You guys' who can afford that, your screens must melt with gooey eye candy..

I hope this doesnt stray to much off topic, but is overclockin a v.card easy enough for someone like me to do it without making my card or computer go boom?

RMA: return merchendise autorization

return dept is commonly reffered to as the RMA dept.

the 5200 sucked ass. gaming on a geforce4 wouldve looked better.

overclocking can be done through the Nvidia driver control panel, its as easy as moving a slider until the internal test fails at a given clock speed :p

Yeah and use ATI Tool to scan for artifacts . . .
