Hi all,

It's been a while since I last upgarded my PC and since my 5yr old video card died I am now needing to upgrade. I currently have the following:

Gigabyte S series Motherboard
6Gb Ram
Corsair PSU (1000W)
Intel Core 2 Duo (3Ghz)
Antec 900 case

I am looking at getting a new Motherboard, one that supports SLI and getting 2 Gigabyte GTX 460 Super OverClock Edition cards. SO my main question is how good are these cards on thier own and SLI'd? also would my case be big enough to cope with both cards?

Well, if you going to make that gpu upgrade, so sli, you might want to upgrade to at least a C2Q too.

O.K you lost me on that one, C2Q? Sorry but I have been out of touch with Hardware fo such a long time now.
 
But, if you're going to get a new motherboard, and maybe a new cpu, might as well upgrade to the latest stuff (sandy bridge or ivy).
 
If you are replacing your motherboard you might consider moving up to the new Sandy Bridge platform. A P67 motherboard with a 2600K cpu will be a huge difference from your C2D.

Also Nvidia might release the 560 cards in 1 1/2 to 2 weeks.
 
I am not sure how far my budget will reach. I will have to look in to how much things are going to cost. Thanks for the info so far.
 
So far I have just been looking on eBuyer as I have it open atm, keeping my current memory, PSU and case, this is what I have looked at so far:

CPU: Intel Core I7 2600k 3.4GHz Socket 1155
Mobo: Asus P8H67-M PRO H67 Socket 1155
GFX: Gigabyte GTX 460 Super OverClock

This lot would cost me: £351.82, in budget. Now if I was to do this I am sure there is a beter video card than the one listed. I could buy 1 card with the above and then 1/2 months down the line buy the second video card. Can anyone suggest a better card for around the £200 budget. I do game and love the Sup Com2, Batman Arkham Asylum, Guild Wars & Guild Wars 2 (when out)

I want the new Video card to be future proof as it will probs be another 5 yrs before I can upgarde as the 9 month old in the house just eats cash :p
 
I don't think you can keep your current memory. C2D uses ddr2 memory and the new intel sandy bridge uses ddr3 memory. You can get by using ddr3 1333 with sandy bridge.

Wait for the nvidia 560 release. Even if you dont buy one it may cause 460 prices to drop some.
 
I RMA'd a 7900 to BFG tech a year or so ago and they sent me a 8800. I had it for 2 weeks before it started to artifact. Now they are out of business and I am stuck with a 9lb paper weight.

I will have to check what RAM I have and cook a GFX card for tea tonight :p

Lol. Not everyone in the UK likes tea. I'm an exception to that rule :p
Also, tea is a regional english expression for the evening meal, in addition to being a hot beverage.

Abernus: If you're after spending less, you could stick with your DDR2 system and find a core 2 quad off ebay.
 
I have done the Baking trick on a couple of different cards with success.

I'd seriously consider looking to buy used parts and build an i7 920 system. I don't see the need for him to buy SB, especially with everyone trying to get rid of their old i7 systems.
 
Well I have just finished baking my card, now got to wait 1 hour for it to cool down. While I do I am trying to figure out what RAM I had in my system. As I can't get a display atm I am googling all the numbers on my Balistix Ram chips
 
O.K here is where I stand. I have been talking to my wife and she has given me £500 to re-build with If possible I would like to keep my Antec 900 case (if it's big enough)

Now given what has been posted so far what would people recommend for this price as a rebuild I would need:

Mobo
CPU
RAM
GFX (I will buy second one for SLI in 2 months when I have cash again)
PSU? I made a mistake on what I have, my current PSU is a Corsair 620W modular

I used to be an Nvidia fan but I want the best gaming performance that I can get with the money. Almost forgot my current cooler is a: Tuniq Tower 120 so this will probs need replacing as well.

I will also update on how the card got on, 30 mins left for it to cool down now :D

If you have an Antec 900 keep it. I dont like them since they are a bit cramped in a way but no reason to get rid of it for a new case.
 
Glad to hear the case should fit all if a bit cramped, The old GFX card is back in my machine and is working to a fashion. I geta good video display, but when using the Post processing effects I still get some artifacts, not as many as before but still some. On the upside I can use this setup until I get my new one orderd.

Lets see what people recommend, I am in your experienced hands :D
 
If your asking for Build advice I suggest you make a new Thread in the General Hardware area. you will get alot more help there. Make sure you answer all the questions in the Sticky.
 
I'd still prioritise the card, it could well fail completely in a short period, you don't want to be left with having spent money on components that don't have to be upgraded, and not being able to afford to get the system working again. For £500 for both, I'd still stick with my previous recommendation, you can afford the XFX card in that budget.
 
i5 2400 or 2500k (the 2500k overclocks real easy, almost can rely on a 10-20% performance increase for free)
p67 board
4 gb ram (depending on your needs, stepping up to 8gb might be worth it)
at least an amd 6850 or nvidia gtx 460 1GB
 
I feel for ya.. I just lost a BFG GTX 295. :(

The card lights up green but the fans don't spin or anything.
 
Hmm, I have to say, I'm surprised by how few failures I've seen of the GTX295. The 8800s were notorious for going pop after a few years, but the GTX200s have been much better all round.
