They had 2 at my local Best Buy. Now they have one. :D

That pic looks funky/computer rendered, what did you scan this thing in a flatbed?

I just compared the photos of the two types of board on BFG's site. It looks like there is a large heatsink running over the ram blocks. I wonder if this solution is any/much better than the so-called "reference" fan? For example, is the custom fan model more overclockable?

I don't like the looks of that heatsink. I think the retail HSF looks sturdier and "better", I guess.

The silver part isn't the heatsink though - there is what looks like a copper molding/plate underneath (you can see part of it in that photo) which is the heatsink. The silver part is just the fan housing/ducting I think. Which were you referring to?

Actually, that heatsink isn't nearly as good as the old reference design. You will get higher temperature plus it makes the memory heatup faster because it shares the heatsink with the gpu.

I have the same card...not sure how efficient the cooling design is.

I run 59C when I'm just browsing the web, and about 69C after intensive Doom3 gaming.

That's o'c @ 400/1100.

so lucky ur bestbuy had 1 i been calling all over my area ( dallas fort worth tx) anyone no if a store has it in my area?

I don't know. But I like the blue pcb and the blue leds. Temps are 64°C, but I think the measurement is high. Ambient measurement is 45°C, and that is a bit high too. But if you just consider the delta T, then 19°C isn't bad at all.

I went to my insurance agent to renew car insurance, and it's right next to BB. So I was lucky.

I figure that since I spent $420 today, BFG won't miss the bandwidth (it's off their website)
:D

it isnt so great after all.... :D

(many people, including myself, have been finding out that these newer BFG coolers actually cool worse than the regular nVidia-designed coolers...)

no, I bought the BFG card just to see if it was better than my PNY card which it was not.

my PNY card O/Cs more and it doesnt run no where near as hot as the BFG did.

So.. did you return it?

no, I didnt have the chance to because once one of my buddies found out that I had the card, he turned around and bought it from me. :D

hopefully you gouged him?

Anyway, that cooler was out for the FX series too, and it wasn't so great back then either compared to some other companies. Leadtek and MSI look to have the best 6800GT custom coolers so far. Not so sure about Gainward's yet.

Honestly though unless you are a silent PC nut there is no reason not to get a reference 6800GT cooler - when many cards are overclocking to 420/1100 on stock 6800GT cooling, results less than that are more a limitation of yield than cooling.

Below is a copy of my post from here: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?p=1026457475#post1026457475

From all the nasty conspiracy theories I've heard about that BFG "custom fan", I'm beginning to think that this Custom Fan shot JFK from the grassy knoll. FYI, the European versions of BFG's GT OC are all "custom fan" cards. They must have some confidence in it.

BFG are OCing this card by 20 MHz - it's a smallish overclock but logic dictates that BFG must be comfortable that this fan can cool the card adequately at 370 MHz, therefore I think such confidence implies there must be a decent cushion on virtually every one of these GT chips, at least to ~390 MHz.

My own opinion (as a PhD Physical scientist, so I'm not talking crap here), looking at the card design, I think, as has been pointed out elsewhere, that the only real flaw in this design is the fact that the heatsink is one piece, i.e. the RAM & GPU share the same heatsink. If the surface area of the heatsink is large enough though (and airflow adequate), it may negate any possible impact that the RAM heat overflow would have on the GPU's possible overclock. Of course, there's no way this can be tested unless someone takes a single card and tries both heatsinks on it, applied with the same thermal grease and tested under the same conditions. That would be a curious project for someone with the spare cash.

i don't know what you guys are talking about, but who gives a damn about some worthless stock cooler?

i can't for th elife of me figure out why people are so excited about stock coolers. anyone in their right mind who intends to max a card is going to put some better cooling on there, no?

thats what I've been saying.

BFG should left the two heatsinks seperate so the massive amount of heat from the GPU wouldnt be heating up the memory like it does.

I know this because I touched the base of the cooler while I played Doom 3 and it was very hot. almost enough to burn my finger and you can damn sure bet that 95% of that heat is coming from the GPU and not the memory.

no, not everyone because people like myself dont have the option of putting a bigger cooler on our cards due to very limited space:

I hear a great deal of variation on temps from posts on several forums.
I say that most of them are not reliable because unless you know how well
they are cooling the entire case the temp of is purely relative.
My two year old box has some serious quiet air flow and everything stays nice
and cool... I shut down the two front intakes and temps slowly start to rise
to a 5 - 7 C difference depending on the components.

Has nVidia posted any reference to expected or max temp ranges?

It's simple - they want to be able to overclock without having to mess with the heatsink/fan, which isn't too unreasonable. Personally I fully intend to replace the stock unit with the next rev of the Arctic Silencer, since I have had good experience with their products before. In the mean time though, it would be nice to OC by a decent amount without worrying about cooling.

PNY and BFG should both produce very similar results.

The nice thing about BFG is they have a full Lifetime Warranty!
Not some 1 or 3 year warranty... plus they also have free tech support if you need it.

I've got the BFG 6800 GT OC and I'm lovin' it!

FWIW, my Leadtek 6800GT @ stock runs like 50*C during normal (2D) use, and only hits about 60*C running 3dmark... :-/

This fan is fine. Remember there is alway variability in each GPU and each system, so temperature readings from one person may not be the same for everyone.

Here's why I like this fan:

1. Heatpipe technology
2. Blue lights and chrome-finish is looks pretty cool in my system
3. ~ equivalent performance to reference fan
4. Looks like the same fan as on BFG's 5900 series - a proven performer

Anyway, BFG has the lifetime warranty, so if it messes up, I'm covered.
