Unlocking it voids yout warranty correct? Should also make it impossible to return.

Not really, the card should work fine with 12 pipes and 5 pixel shaders. Unlocking isnt permanent like a BIOS mod, and AFAIK, unlocking hasnt caused any damage to cards themselves.

Returning a perfectly working card is very cheesy though . . . . .

Having worked in the video card industry, I know it is quite true that "false returns" (returns that are not due to a valid hardware failure or are due to some dude mucking around with the bios or overclocking, etc.) drive the prices higher and higher, since both the retailer and the manufacturer have to eat the cost of the return. This only results in eventually higher prices on new products for everyone. So while you may be selfishly gaining something in the short term, we all suffer from this type of behavior in the long run.
My two cents.

Haven't ya just taken something back just because you didn't like it? I don't do it often, but they say you can return it. Some places say for any reason, though BB doesn't. I think it use to though. I agree that taking something back after you've voided the warranty is questionable, but if I bought something and just did not like the product then I think you should be able to return it. Just my 2 cents.

Well, since my 9800 pro (which I modded to an XT w/ 128mb RAM) *died*, I was searching for a new card. I hadn't had an nVidia card in a while and had been skeptical with the FX series, but I saw Steve's post and decided to head down to the local BB. True, it is 5 dollars more at the store, and with tax it's around 5-10 dollars more than if you order it online... but it's the old "I can have it now, or wait"... I just won't stop at McDonalds on the way home :p.

As far as the card, I absolutely love it! I runs like a dream; I was able to enable all 4 pipes and the vertex shader. The heat sink on this puppy is high quality and I honestly can't hear the fans going that much (of course, my processor fan is pretty loud :p ). It stays fairly cool and I was able to clock it up to around 400 core and 800 memory with the pipes and shader enabled.

As for performance over my 9800 pro, there IS an increase, but it depends on how you look at it. OCed and with the extra pipes, it scores 2-3k higher in 3dMark01, compared to my (effective) 9800XT OCed. However, with the new patch for Far Cry... wow. No comparison. Might just be the title, but this card really makes a difference.

Now if only they would fix it so I could watch WMVs and AVIs... I have faith though.

All in all, I'm very happy with this pickup. Hope everyone else enjoys their's as well!

yea i calculated instore and online purchase for pickup and it was no contest. since i purchased it after hours (like 9.15 :O) they sent me the pick-up email the next day (yesterday) and sicne i have soem tiem today i figure i'll roll by the store on the way home and grab it. funny thing too - i live in the twin cities. st. paul got 6.5% and mpls got 7% tax hahah so i got it in st. peezy. so like 266 end cost. still a good deal. now i gonna have 2 copies of far cry (new comp comes with a copy too)

oh wells! cant wait.

EDIT++
and thanks for the noise level observations guys. im very acute to the computer sounds... its a big deal to me so hopefully it'l be fine.

Dude, how is this a 'False Return'? Best Buy has a huge sign on the wall above the cashiers clearing stating that you can bring a product back for any reason no questions asked within 14 or 30 days (depending on product)... I'm taking it back because it didn't unlock without artifacts... I'm not claiming it's broken and I didn't damage or violate any warranty... I didn't even overclock the thing... I unlocked the pipes and then re-locked them... I'm not doing anything underhanded or unethical... my conscience is just fine... hows yours?

I think what he means is that since there was nothing really wrong with your card, i.e. it worked as it should and wasn't failing, then it's a "false return". I guess the real question would be if you're going to buy another one or not.

Now if only they would fix it so I could watch WMVs and AVIs... I have faith though.

What do you mean? It won't play WMVs or AVIs? It will play MPEGS ok at least. I had no problem with an MPEG. I assume it's a driver issue?

Took it back and exchanged it for another one... unlocked all pipes and shaders on the new one and NO ARTIFACTS!!! Ran it through a couple of rounds of 3dmark and it looks awesome... won't be returning this one... One thing that I think is key... on the new card, there were 2 entries listed as Hardware Masked but they weren't the ones that were disabled... on the first card that was bad, the hardware masked ones were the ones that were disabled... or this could simply be a function the software thinking it was the old card... either way I don't care...

woot, got mine today. Just waiting on my ram from newegg now...

Yea, it plays MPEGs just fine, but when I try to fire up an AVI or WMV, it gives me a codec error. I reinstalled WMP and got the codecs, but it's a no go. According to nVidia and what [H] posted a couple days ago, they're working on a driver to fix it. I really can't wait until they get it out...

Did you noticed any artifacts after unlocking the rest of the pipelines?

I did...I had one of my pipelines damaged. :(

But O well it is still a 14 pipeline card (rivatuner lets me control what pipelines are locked, thus letting me leave the damaged pipleine locked and unlocking the good extra pipeline).

O and I had the PM to their web price (saved like $6).

super

I've unlocked the masked pixel/vertex units on 2 of these so far. One was a complete success, the other had a damaged pipline, On the card w/broken pipeline, the only evidence of defect was a few corrupted textures in Far Cry and and in one test of 3DMark03. Everything else (D3, FS2004, UT2004, NFSU) ran completely clean with the speed improvement you would expect.

BTW, Outpost.com and Fry's (from Houston newspaper ad for this weekend) also have the BFG 6800 OC for $249.

9800 no match - it's faster - ;)

problem is after tax and shipping it's 275 -

still a decent price - (I did not have much luck with the BFG 6800 OC)

not sure if it is still running but I got a x800 Pro 256 AGP card from ecost for 330.

it seems the price went back up ... Best Buy shows $299.99 plus tax for instore pickup.

right now you can get the pny 6800 for 299 with 10% off coupon (on main page) - or use

10COUP1031

for a total of 270 and a penny shipping

Yep deal is over it is now back to $299. This was a "one time deal" one week only deal.

Sure looks like it, I went to BB yesterday (Atlanta, GA) and they were toally out and the price was marked as 299.99.

I will gladly sell you my 6800 Ultra that I got for $130 though if youre interested :D

</JOKE>
Just kidding, my money was refunded just like the rest of you.

Outpost.com/Fry's still has BFG 6800 OC for $249.99. I don't know about stock status at Outpost.com, but Fry's (Houston) had them in stock as of yesterday.

I was at Fry's Atlanta yesterday and they had them for $299.99.
Why can't fry's be uniform in thier sales?

Yes, that would make life easier. Even the DFW Fry's ads (available online) are usually different in some ways from the ads published in Houston.

since the cheapest I can find the ultra is 400, would the drop in performance be worth the $150 cheaper price?

I ordered the 6800nu from outpost.com on wednesday and they just emailed me today saying that it was out of stock... the bastards.
