BF3 Tweaks and Help Thread

I recommend that once you are in the server of your choice, you alt tab back and close your browser.

I'm on Chrome and after I did this, all my issues and chugging went away immediately. Hope this helps.

Does overclocking your CPU and GPU really help frame rates? I ran BF3 at stock with my system. Then I overclocked my CPU to 4.5 Ghz and my GPU to 840/1325 and to me I may have gained 5 frames. I was under the impression that I should get alot more than that....

If you search online for bf3 cpu/gpu benchmarks, you will find out that OC'ing does not increase fps at all.

I am aware that chrome w/ battlelog uses a lot of resources; however, closing it doesn't really increase performance in my experience.

no point in overclocking your cpu since you gpu is by far the limitation here.

I gained 9-15fps with my overclock in sig below.

Not noticed stuttering.

Are people certain HT is the cause of it?

Don't frame rates drop by disabling it?
have you ever done any research on HT? on an i7 its almost just as likely to do nothing or even hurt performance in games as it is to help it. in BF 3 even just two cores of an i7 are all that is needed so of course HT will do nothing at all even if it was perfectly designed.

"We’ve also read about folks complaining about stuttering issues caused by Hyper-Threading; disabling the feature seems to smooth things out for them. At no point did a perceptible stuttering (aside from the jerkiness attributable to a too-slow GPU at a too-high setting) afflict our platform. However, we can confirm that turning off Hyper-Threading on the Core i7-2600K, going from eight logical processors to four physical ones, doesn’t hurt performance in any way, and in fact may slightly increase it. The rest of our tests were run with Hyper-Threading enabled, but feel free to shut it off if it benefits your experience!"

Hey all. I'm trying to run BF3 smoothly on my 2nd rig. Experiencing choppy gameplay with all settings to medium

Intel G620
H67
2GB DDR3
ATI 5670, running official 10.9 drivers

Monitor resolution: 1440x900

I'm considering dropping a stick of 4GB RAM in there to make it 6GB total.

However, I realize that the CPU OR the GPU will likely end up as the bottleneck in this case.

Any settings tweaks or cheap purchases I can make to make BF3 run better?

Or is the PC hopeless and I should drop the idea completely? :O

why on earth would you build/buy a modern pc with just 2gb of ram? if you do not close down every thing on your computer before gaming then you will certainly get some hitching in some modern games.

your cpu is pretty slow but the game should be playable with it. in most cases your 5670 is a little slower than an 8800gt which is the minimum required just to play the game. you might want to try low settings at this point. tbh you really should have tried that before posting just to see how your pc handled it.

In case anyone is running a similar rig, here are my settings. The game looks AMAZING to me. I put everything at Medium because that is how the Beta was at, in the Beta High was really Medium and when i first played retail i was having trouble and the game looked a lot different for some reason.

Windows 7 PRO 64 bit
Intel Core i7-920 (stock speeds)
ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard
G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 Memory
EVGA GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) Superclocked EE
Nvidia GeForce 285.38 BF3 Drivers
OCZ Vertex II SSD
Samsung 245BW

use 16x AF. unless you are using some entry level $40 card, that setting has not had an impact on performance in many many years.

and oh yeah are some stunning graphics. lol, and this is Ultra settings so it looks like some corners were cut here.

Bought it with 4GB. Office server needed the RAM but had no extra slots on the MB. Swapped the 4GB for the server's 2GB.

Yeah, I shoulda tried the low settings but wasn't really sure I wanted to. Game looked a bit bad with the settings on auto already :O

If you are on 32bit OS and have frequent CTDs(not disconnects, but an error window pops up and tells you Battlefield 3 has stopped working - appcrash bf3.exe) try this workaround: http://battlelog.battlefield.com/bf3/forum/threadview/2832654489427021500/1/

It appears to be a memory leak issue - I noticed I was crashing less often in SP or smaller maps while large matches like Caspian would boot me within 5 minutes; turning everything down to medium with AA/AF off helped a bit, but still too frequent; then after applying the cmd I was able to play 2½ hours of 32vs32 with everything maxed uninterrupted.

edit: the best part of this whole thing - the OP's original thread got locked by an EA mod because its title contained all capital letters and that apparently is a violation to posting rules......fucking really? So your crappy support dept. did basically nothing to help customers in need but the least you can do now is crackdown on forum posts with hardly-intimidating titles that may have helped people that paid money for your products?

Yeah, this is a driver/game issue apparently. I'm using the latest from nvidia on my GTX570. So, definitely something with the game as it's happening to both sides.

I'm seeing the short green flashes with my Radeon HD 9670. Obnoxious at times but usually infrequent.

Something is wrong with your install or PC, cars look nothing like that for me. Granted they don't look stunning either, but way better than that.

It's only in certain places. When I'm flying or walking off the "beaten path" I am noticing a lot of unfinished geometry and models. It's like they threw in low polygon objects in places where people wouldn't normally visit, but these places are still accessible.

so what are the latest/greatest Radeon Catalyst drivers? I'm on a Q6600 w/ 4gig and 2gig 5870 @ 1920x1200

The official driver should be released tomorrow.

Right now it's the 11.10 Preview 3 driver and CAP4.
I hope AMD increase the MSAA efficiency. AMD cards are getting raped with Ultra Settings and MSAA on.

Anybody else having issues with the repair in stall feature? Every other game I try to join I get the error "battlefield has stopped working". I tried to do a repair install and it downloaded all the data, but it hangs on the install portion and then go back to ready to install after failing with no error message.

Yeah it breaks your install. You have to uninstall and reinstall.

I kept getting errors today even though it worked fine last night. I tried the repair option and now it keeps saying ready to install even though I have told it to install. After googling it seems this has been the case since beta.

yeah but, how much did it raise your minimum or avg FPS?

Does anyone else have their page file option turned off and experience any crashes? Sometimes the game will just lock up and I will have to open the task manager and BF3 is just unresponsive. I have my page file options turned off. I have 12 GB of RAM but have read that some programs require alittle virtual memory.

I have mine on but it's small, 1-2GB.

Why have both forms of AA on? Turn off Differed AA and you'll have more wiggle room for higher res textures. I've found I get best performance with just Post AA. Also, turning off Motion Blur not only gives a great performance boost, but I think it makes it alot easier to see what you're doing when tracking enemies in close-quarters.

I'm not sure if this is a hardware, software, or driver problem--I am seeing a lot of textures flashing, especially when I look through a sniper scope. It looks like I am seeing the destructible edges of a building flashing when the building/wall is still intact. All sorts of stuff just flashing on and off.

This sound familiar to anyone? Running 11.10 preview 3 on rig in sig. I was so paranoid of it I took the window off my 600tSE and put two more fans on there blowing on the GPU, but I don't think it is a hardware problem. I'll try to get a SS.

I trust all your drivers are completely up to date?

Maybe take a few settings from ultra down to high just for grins.

I've also turn post processing AA completely off in my game even though my hardware can handle it and things look sharper, cleaner, and flat out better to my eyes.

YMMV

Hi guys, this is a bit off topic but here goes, right now I have a Q6600 @ 3ghz, 4gig DDR2, and a single 5870 2gig running 1920x1200. Is it worth it to buy a Crossfire mobo and an additional 5870? Or should I go another route??

edit: can my 2gb 5870 crossfire with a 1gib 5870??

Hey guys,

Finally I had a chance to try BF3 and played some SP last night. With 1080P vsync off, motion blur and MSAA at off (the rest ultra)
I’m getting around 50-70FPS. From my understanding I might get 10-20FPS hit when I start playing real BF3 game (MP)…
I really like how the game looks at the moment (even with MSAA off).

Are there any other settings I can tweak to maximize FPS (i.e. setting textures to HIGH)… that would give me some some boost without losing PQ?

I’m using AMD Beta 3 preview drivers… see my specs for the rest.

Thanks so much…

Not even playing on Ultra. This happens on high and medium as well. Maybe my install is screwed up? I had the Origin "an update is available" problem where it forced me to reinstall (that is, do a system restore to before it was uninstalled).

You can try running it at just High, instead of the with Ultra settings. I played around with both, and didn't really notice much of a difference in the look of the game between High and Ultra.

Hopefully the new drivers fix the flashing green screen issue, it's not a dealbreaker but sometimes it's very distracting

The new drivers don't have anything about BF3 in the release notes. They were just released today but I'm not changing.
