BF3 Positional Audio Tip

Just curious, do you have a sound card or onboard? What is the rest of your setup?

I am still playing around with settings. I can't hear footsteps worth a damn unless the area I am in is really quiet. Not a common situation in this game lol.
X-Fi titanium champion etc etc. whatever the best Titanium model was with the front panel.

for speakers i use 2.1 of logitech z-5500's 5.1 and my headset is a Razer with miniports (not a DAC).

i play games under Game mode with every sound mode and setting turned off, including 3D and EAX. In-game, i use Headphones for the headset and Wartapes for speakers. with the Enhanced Stereo positional audio was incredibly off. i couldnt tell whether a plane was flying overhead or half the map away. even people running by would sometimes sound close but end up being 15' away. i'm not sure it's perfect now but it's much better.

footsteps are iffy. i think the problem might be the game. ive heard people run by outside and barely make a noise and other times in indoor maps (especially Metro) i hear their footsteps echo down a hall. it's inconsistent for me as well.

Would a good 5.1 surround sound system be better or equal to a good pair of surround sound headphones such as my Logitch G35s?

You get much better positioning information with 5.1 speakers, but I found it much easier to pick up quiet noises (like footsteps, just not in BF3) with headphones.

footsteps. how to hear them? I am having a hell of a time hearing people move around. Using headphones, I am trying everything I can think of including playing with the EQ to boost freqs that footsteps might be in. I think the 2K region. Really getting frustrated.

On standard headphones, i am using wartapes, and turned off "Forced stereo...." Seems to have the best ambience.
Not effects or equalization.

In BF3, you don't. Has to be some kind of a bug, because I can hear my own equipment when I walk, but can never hear someone else.

Haha ya, enemy soldiers running around with bunny slippers on. Super silent death!

Bumped it up from CD quality to DVD quality and to be honest I didn't notice a bit of difference.
