If this rumor from BF3Blog is to be believed, Valve and EA may actually be very close to bringing this shooter to the largest platform installation base on the PC. Gamers with rigs love Steam, that’s a simple fact, and EA absolutely must realize the potential customer loss they’d encounter by electing to skip out on Steam entirely due to the way they handle DLC.

And here I thought it was the official announcement. What do the kiddies say? Ah yes...

Welcome to two days ago. :)

Or just allow people who bought on origin to activate their keys on steam.

I think you will be able to use the origin code on steam, but you will still have to have origin running in order to play it. I am betting that this is how it will play out (if it does).

But we will see..

That would be retarded.

It'll require steam and origin. You have to use steam to start the game, origin to choose a server, gamespy comrade to choose a squad, battlenet for your loadout, and a constant connection to Ubisoft servers.

This here? This is the future of gaming.

I got a good deal on Origin and Dead Space 2 for free, hard for me to complain about it.

Boy, if it sells on Steam but still requires Origin (quite likely) the forums are going to flat-out explode with all the complaining. Can't wait.

That would be retarded.

There are games (Dawn of War II (before patch), Batman etc.) that require Windows Live even though they are in your steam account.

I ask you, is that retard?
I answer, yep, you betcha.... and companies wonder why legit gamers are so annoyed.

Meh, Origin is topping my 50mbps connection, Steam can't even 1/4 it these days. Personnally i use other services when they are better deal out there or if i want a good download speed. I like Steam but it's not what it's used to be.

I downloaded BF3 on Beta launch day faster than I've ever downloaded anything from Steam and while I was doing it Steam friends crashed lol.

Total opposite for me. Origin always tops out at 2.8 MB/s while Steam maxes out my connection @ 3.2 MB/s

same for me, I think the highest I've hit on steam is about 3.5 on origin around 2

i get way faster speeds on origin downloads than i do with steam, so that is a major benefit for me, however most of my games are on steam, and i do like having them all in one place.

Yeah, Steam for me tops out at 2.2MB/s, my connection is capable of about 2.7MB/s, Origin topped out at 1.7MB/s. HOWEVER, Steam RARELY every actually goes that fast, far more likely it goes about 600-800kB/s. Oddly enough, downloading TW2 patch via the CDProjekt launcher went at 2.5MB/s, lol.

But anyway, if its on Steam and doesn't require Origin it definitely gives me more incentive to buy. I only played the beta for a short while before deleting both BF3 and Origin. I installed Origin to an F: drive but then when I installed BF3 it installed to me C: which is my SSD, I dont recall it ever asking me where I wanted to install it, and I dont have a lot of free space on my SSD, so I just uninstalled it. Steam also crashed a couple of times while running Origin for no reason.

If its on Steam but still requires Origin, meh, that's not any more incentive for me to buy.

shit i'd love to hit 3.5 on steam.. best i've ever seen was 1MB/s on a 50mbit connection.. yay go steam! origin on the other hand had my connection pegged at 50mbit.. which i wasn't expecting given the amount of traffic it had right when they opened BF3 to open beta.

yeah it automatically installs all the games to the C drive. something i hope gets fixed soon given that i have a whole 4 gigs free on my boot drive :p

If it requires Origin to run why bother, I would rather use Origin instead, not going to deal with two DRM bullshit altogether.

...settings->change default installation folder as well as changing default installer folder.

This is good news, if they launch on steam without the requirement for origin then I'll pick it up, otherwise no sale.

Steam is pretty slow for me about 2MB/s, maybe 3MB/s tops, the connection tops out at about 6MB/sec, their UK servers tend to be quite slow for me. 100Mbit is enabled for me in Dec and that's going to bring 10-12MB/sec download speeds, so 2-3MB/sec at that point is going to become a pretty small fraction of the available bandwidth.

Origin was pretty damn slow, the 3.5Gb of BF3 beta took about a little less than an hour to download which I guess puts it at about 1MB/sec or a little more, that wasn't release day either that was about 2-3 days after public beta started.

Thatd be messed up if like 90% of origin pre-orders get canceled.

It would be their own damn fault...

"Uh you need to use origin because Battlelog needs it"
Oh really? So why don't my Origin contacts tie into Battlelog....or anything else other than real time DRM for that matter...

Maybe this has already been said but..

Origin is to Steam as Google+ is to Facebook.

I have pretty much all of my games on Steam, as well as the friends I play games with. When Steam is pretty much established as THE service for game management it is difficult to pick up a new service to start over from scratch. This can be obviously compared to why most people aren't actively using Google+ over Facebook.

Releasing BF3 for Steam would likely mean less users on Origin. Which will be a bad thing for EA. But on the other hand, if BF3 was available on Steam you would have more people buying the game. Sort of a sticky situation I think.

edit:: Also..

Yo dawg, I heard you like game managers so we put a game management in your game manager so you can manage games while you manage your games.

I figured there'd be an option somewhere, but after playing a few rounds of BF3 beta and fail to backup some of my work data because there wasn't enough space on my SSD to create the temp files required, I decided it was just easier to delete it than waste time trying to move it (hell, if I got desperate I always could have just moved the folder and symlinked to it).

I hit 4.3mb/s earlier this week, maintained about 3.5mb/s for the entire download on Steam.

or you could reverse that analogy and say the intelligent people left facebook for google+ and the buffoons stayed with facebook because its the only thing they know and change is evil..

You can probably expect Origin's download speed to improve over time as they accommodate for the spike in users from recent promotions/BF3.

Origin itself is messed up.
not really, but okay.

i'm sure if it goes to steam, origin will still be needed.

edit: i don't have anything installed via steam anymore, been playing me1, dao (again), and bf3. however i've seen steam hit 20MB (yes MB), origin on the other hand tops out at 2.9~3.5MB for me.

which is why they're obviously going to wait until after launch, while stringing along the fence-sitters so that they don't rule out the purchase altogether. ea may suck but they're not stupid, if they were going to relent to steam they would of course milk this for all it's worth. why would they even consider it, unless pre-orders are failing to meet projections as expected.

I presume it will work just like it does with alice, where you use the origin key once to register the game and unlock the extras, then steam as the download/update manager. the steam/origin model has already been done by them in other games, which is of course ready for them to fall back on once the origin-only strongarm fails.

Steam gives you more FPS in game if you use it, you didn't know that?

I feel the same way as you.

I never understand this.

The game REQUIRES Origin. Why add more DRM? You know DRM the thing PC gamers hate?

They will have to pay more for said DRM also.
People hate DRM when it's convenient for them to do so.

Any service need to launch a game is bullshit, just depends on which type you are willing to shovel.
