BF2 Video Corruption/Crashing. Vid Card Problem?

I have BF2 and I hate it. I love the game when it works, but it rarely ever works. I meet all requirements or exceed them (1 GB PC-3200, P4 3.0 ghz, X800 Pro VIVO modded to XT PE). Currently running on 5.8 Catalyst.I have two problems, which I think are related. The problems are:

I get consistent crashing or image corruption at high lighting (I think it is just lighting and not dynamic lighting. Although I have not bothered to narrow that down, but it is safe to say lighting in general is the problem). The image corruption I have been able to narrow down as some sort of conflict with any program that injects an overlay onto the screen, such as Xfire with the ingame chat or Fraps with the frame rate counter. With either of these two programs, I always get image corruption, slow framerates, and sometimes the game will crash/lock after several minutes.

The other problem is that I cannot run the game on high lighting. Well, actually I can. The problem was that every time I ran the game with high lighting was that I would get horrendous frame rates, but that was resolved by not running fraps or Xfire with ingame chat. The problem still remains however, of the game crashing. As of the time of writing, the game will lock (computer remains responsive, the game is not) and I have to end the process to return to my desktop. This usually occurs after about 10-20 minutes of play. Doesn't really happen on single player for some reason. It only happens on multiplayer (so far... haven't played single player too much). After the game crashes, I return to desktop and my desktop resolution is stuck at the game resolution (desktop at 1152x864, game at 1280x960) and I CANNOT change it. No matter what I do. I must restart to return my desktop to original resolution.

This problem has quite a long history, but what I have told you thus far is the state of things right now. Before, I wasn't quite sure what was the problem, and my game would constantly crash during map loads at around 60% (during the geometry phase). My screen would become garbled. It would be like square and rectangular sections of the screen would all be moved around to a different place. Then the rest of the symptoms would be the same, game would lock and crash and sometimes return to desktop, sometiems force to shut down and restart.

Now, I am not sure what to think. Could this be some BIZARRE problem with Xfire/Fraps and other programs that overlay images and BF2? Some odd issue with the game and the driver? Could it be that my ram is bad, and once the game hits the bad part that all hell breaks loose and messes everything else up? Memtest shows 0 errors over 4 or 5 consecutive tests. I am about ready to retest my ram overnight tonight. Or could it be that my video card has been effed up?

PLEASE!! SOME INSIGHT!

OK - first, understand that there are way more problems happening with ATI cards than Nvidia cards in BF2, and not all of them have been completely defined as of yet.

To fix your texture problem, turn off shadows (they're screwed up anyway). You should still be able to run lighting.

You need to run a driver cleaner on your machine. A lot of what I'm seeing/hearing looks exactly like a driver problem. Although you have 5.8, it sounds like you have some other drivers on your machine mucking up the works. Also, I believe that there's an ATI patch just for BF2 (I may be mistaken), so check on that. Should be easy to find.

You also need to check out the temperature on your card. Play for 20 minutes or whatever, and check the core temp. If things start flying apart around 10-20 minutes as you say, it indicates there may be a significant heat issue.

Is your card overclocked?

what kinda card do you have? I had that same problem in other games. It is really annoying but i never found out what it was.Try uninstalling your drivers running driver and reinstall. This might help but if it doesnt then it really doesnt hurt anyone. Another thing try to Alt+Tab out and then back in. When i had that problem that use to work sometimes. And one of the other problems you mentioned about that screen res also use to happen to me. like i said delet drivers run driver cleaner and reinstall. That is the only thing i can think of.Best of luck to you.

I always use driver cleaner before I install new drivers. I have cleaned and recleaned many times along with my installation of 5.8 (I think I installed them 3 times now). My GPU temperatures don't go any higher than 70 C and ATI Tool reports around 50 C ambient at full load. My card at the moment is clocked at the default XT PE core clock of 520 mhz with the memory turned down to 450 mhz (Pro is 450 mhz. Hence the reason why my card was a Pro and not an XT PE).

I just played maybe about an hours worth of BF2 with the same settings as before except with Fraps running and the game in windowed mode at 800x600. The game didn't crash at all or anything but I did get a few video corruptions (That is how I took the screens).

I am trying to get arranged to test my computer with a friend's 9500 pro (to see if it is just my card) or my friend's 6800 GT (to see if it is my card or ATI in general).

Well, off to run an overnight memtest and tomorrow I'll give an update after some more testing of BF2 with various settings.

i get the same problems, like when i pull out the beretta, its all black, as in no textures, when i attempt to zoom in with the G36 all i get is a black screen. Then all of a sudden the last time i played, the screen flashed, and all of a sudden it was all better. I was soooo confused...if anyone has a solution, i would love to hear it

Odd Me nor my Brother nor my Friend have had any BF2 Problems.

No currentyl their is no BF2 ATi Patch.

I read somewhere that it's a known issue with the X800 and they're working on a fix... I can't remember where I heard it though.

I thought this was addressed in 5.8? Or is there ANOTHER issue??

I knew it was here somewhere...

This was from a while ago maybe 2 or 3 weeks ago right after I got the game. I don't remember the exact circumstances of the error, but it was either I got this error right as the game started or during the map load. Might be a completely different issue entirely, but I figured this might help.

Ahh I think that was where I read it. The fixes for the latest catalyst drivers... maybe.

Battlefield 2: Geometry corruption or missing textures are no longer noticed when playing the game for an extended period of time under Windows XP with an ATI Radeon® X800 XT installed

Sound familiar?

No currentyl their is no BF2 ATi Patch.

Well, not everyone is going to have problems, but they are rather widespread throughout the community.

From EA:
ATI Releases Updated Catalyst Drivers
ATI has recently released a new version of their Catalyst drivers (version 5.8) that resolve a number of outstanding issues with Battlefield 2. We highly recommend that all current Battlefield 2 users upgrade to these drivers, which can be found here.

Since he is already running 5.8, the issue has been addressed.

My friend has the same prob with his 9800 pro. I had him go to the 5.6 catalyst drivers and the prob went away. Try that if nothing else works.

hm 5.8 fixed all of my performance/corruption problems. It used to happen to me randomly before but it all went away after a "burn in". The more i played, the less it happened. Weird.. I think its a bf2 problem, because there are alot of other hardware that makes it crash. Creative/EAX sound glitches, CTD randomly, graphical lockups.

For a while I also believed that Creative/EAX was one of the contributors to this problem, however, seeing as how the game runs fine with lighting turned to off or low, I am inclined to believe that this is not the case. I just ran 21 passthroughs on memtest86 and 0 errors. So I guess it's not my ram unless memtest skipped over this little part of the ram which Battlefield 2 happens to use which is bad  .

But... Now I am starting to think it's my graphics card. There are lots of little 'anomalies' appearing in games that I never remember seeing before. It is mainly slight discoloration of certain objects. Before the objects would be whatever color they were, but now some of them have this blue or purple tint to them. I remember that when my card was clocked a little too high, this would be one of the signs that it was. However, nothing on my card is technically overclocked for an X800 XT PE.

Here are a few suspects:

Taken on Half Life 2 with maximum everything at 1280x720. The areas in question are circled. Notice how when most of the rock wall looks like... a rock, there are areas where it looks like its glowing blue. Is that just the way it is? Or is this just my graphics card acting up? For reference, this screen was taken on the Ravenholm level at the bottom of the shaft that you must traverse down while navigating the 'jump puzzle'.

http://img360.imageshack.us/img360/7771/hl2ravenholm6lv.jpg

This one is from FarCry and I think this is a bit more apparent and easily comparable. Notice on the rifle's scope that there is this odd purple tint on the lens and throughout the scope. Most of the purple tint happens to be on the polygons that directly face the player.

Both of those are normal, I see the blue also, yours looks a bit more prononced, but that is just most likely the setting you are using.

Same with the scope, I see more blue than purple on mine.

Man... What a relief... I thought for a second that my card was royally fucked. By that I mean anything other than perfect running condition :D . But I could have sworn that the scope on the rifle in FarCry was not there in any way shape or form... Oh well. Not complaining. But then what's up with BF2? I haven't been paying much attention to other problems with the game, but is this kind of problem prevailent in BF2? Am I the only one with this?

Can I do something about this to fix the problem (other than switching video settings which is avoiding the problem, not fixing it)? Or is this just in the hands of ATI and Dice?

My BF2 use to crash my video card all the time.
I never figured out why it doesnt happen anymore, maybe had something to do with virus or windows 2000 pro (Now have XP).

There is some weird shit going on with BF2. I decided to tone some settings down and actually play instead of sitting around wondering why my game can't run with high settings. But this is weird. I set my lighting down to low and my dynamic lighting to off. All seems well, I run everything fine and no crashes. But something's up. I realize that the graphical setting is actually lighting at least medium (possibly high). There are building shadows and shadows are cast on the first person gun and characters and vehicles. It is obviously running on at least medium lighting settings however no crashing, even though I explicitly set the game to low lighting and saved then restarted BF2.

Like I said like two days ago, turn off shadows.

But that still avoids the problem instead of actually fixing anything. I'll see if anything blows up :)

Has it occurred to you that it may not be able to be 'fixed' and that the remedy IS to bypass the problem?

Of course it has. But my problem isn't that my game isn't running. It runs fine. I just want it to run on high settings. So the problem remains: The game does not run on high settings on my machine.

Hopefully I can get access to other video cards and see how they interact with the game, and possibly different ram.

I used to get major texture corruption. Cockpits would go black with a black square for the rotors in FPV. Sometimes I would get black featureless guns as descirbed earlier and the gun sound effects would disappear. Somtimes if I zoomed in the scoped view would be black. While I never had crashes during map loads I would crash 2 or 3 times every round. Not a CTD either though. The screen would corrupt and then go black, nothing for about 30 seconds and then back to game view like nothing had happened and I could play on for another while.

All these issues disappeared when I upgraded to 2 gigs of Ram.

I still have terrain warping which has not been fixed by the 5.8's as promised in the driver release notes but its not a huge issue. My main graphical issue are these black or grey 'skyscrapers' glitches dotted around the map that stretch from the ground up to the sky. I can fly through them but its a pain when i'm lining up a shot in the cobra and then this black monilith appears infront of me blocking my view. I also get the odd glitch where a black or grey strip comes of my gun and connects to some distant object on the map.

I'm running a P4 3.4 650 with 2gig ram, X850XTPE (non OC) at 1920x1200 with everything max detail except AA at 2x. Getting FPS of 40-50avg which I'm happy with. Just these annoying glitches.

i had the same texture problem like you (black, sometimes white or "invisible", sometimes flickering ... and not only 1 object ..)
Were running @ Omega 5.7, uninstalled and instelled cat 5.8 and now these problems are gone :D

HEAT is your problem..

when my x800 pro hits 50C in BF2 it acts up...usually means it time to blow out the silencer..

normally it wont go over 47c...

Are you kidding me? X800's routinely hit 70 and 80 degrees celsius! You can't tell me that BF2 is unable to run on these cards because of temperatures over 50 C...

temperature cant be the problem .. after i installed omega 5.8 and the problem was gone i had the same temperatures like before! :p

I am starting to think that this isn't a card issue anymore. There are many things that have contributed to my current theory. Lately, I've been trying out lots of different scenarios in BF2. But the one thing that always makes me go nuts is the fact that I can play single player or my own LAN server just fine. I would change my graphics settings to the highest levels, and being the lazy person I am, I start single player or start my own LAN because I don't want to look for a server to join. I can play for usually quite a long time so I will think that there isn't a problem. Then I join a multiplayer server online and things go fine then all of the sudden my computer freezes or the game crashes to desktop...

It might not necessarily be that playing online is part of the problem, but so far, all of experiments that I have done point to the online aspect of the game as a huge contributor to my problem.

While running at 1280x1024 in BF2 on my X850 XT PE,BF2 would get all black then crash to the desktop.

So are you saying the game runs fine at resolutions other than 1280x1024 or saying that the circumstances of the crash happened to be at 1280x1024?

For some reason my X850 XT PE doesn't run at 1600x1280 because I cant choose 1600x1280 in all my games.

All the crashes happend at 1280x1024.

1GB of ram with this game is not enough to play the game on any sort of high settings, no matter what video card you have.

Set every slider on medium, and tell me if your video problems go away. The game takes more than a gig of ram BY ITSELF running any setting on high, ESP. lighting or dynamic anything (shadows or lighting)

Do a ctrl-alt-del in game, while actually playing. go over in the corner somewhere on a 64 player server and then look at the process list - way over a gig, isnt it?

I just play on medium - theres not a lot of difference.

I get random "dots" mostly in the sky.. anyone ever hear of this kind of corruption? I am on a x800 also running 5.8's. I tried searching everywhere for others that had the "dot" issue but came up empty.

I run with almost all setting on high, but with no AF or AA.
if I turn AA on... thats it the game will die on me.

You really need 2 gigs to run this bitch well... so poorly coded it aint funny!

If by dots you mean little round circles, then no. If you mean little square areas, then yes I get those. I've only seen it once in BF2, but have seen it several times in BF1942.
