Well I do work for a company which is looking to get into hosting game servers. What they are really looking into is being a player for when BF3 servers are needed. They claim to have some inside info, but wouldn't tell me what that meant. 
So, they asked me to look into quoting some servers and getting some ideas for locations, configs, bandwidth, etc. So I decided to look into current BF2 requirements and everything seems fine. Hardware is too easy, I'm not sure of the amount of servers they'd want to run but from their past investments it's small to medium.
But I got to bandwidth requirements and it dropped my jaw. Take a look at these numbers and someone please tell me I am an idiot:
64 person BF2 servers requires 8 megabits upload and less download. Okay. With 80kb/sec per client times 64 = around 5 megabits upstream on the server side. So I suppose 8 megabits is safe.
So lets say 1 single Xeon server could host 4, 64 person servers, that would be 256 clients at 80kb/sec = almost 21 megabits per second.
Now while doing some research I found that other companies are renting servers for $2.00 a slot. So $128 a month for a 64 man server. How in gods name do they make money?
Considering a DS3 line runs anywhere from $3000-5000 a month and it could only handle maybe, 550 clients.
550 x $2 = $1100 a month income.
Bandwidth price would be $3000+.
I know I am out of my league on this one so somebody set me straight.
