Hi guys,

Never really post on this forum even though I have been going to this site for years.

Anyways I'm just trying to achieve 120 FPS average with all setting set to low at resolutions 1920x1080. I thought 6870 CF would do the trick (coming from a 4850 cf), but that isn't working either. I currently have a 2500k enroute and looking at my sig, was wondering if you guys have any suggestions. I guess the goal I'm trying to state is that I want to game at 1920x1080 with 120fps as cheaply as possible on BF3 (everything set to low). Reason for that is that I have the new Samsung 27in 120hz monitor. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Take this with a grain of salt because I'm pretty much talking out of my arse.

I think you'd have to start looking at what people are getting with 30 inch monitors. You're running at 1920 x 1080. 2,073,600 pixels. You have to do this twice as fast though, so 4,147,200 pixels per second.

In my mind, 60 hz vs 120 hz means approximately double the compute power. Of course, things aren't going to scale perfectly linearly, but bear with me here.

A 30 inch display has 2560 x 1600. 4,096,000 pixels. Not exactly double, but still close.

As I've said, take this with a grain of salt, but maybe find someone with a 30 inch display and ask them to find out what their frame rate is on low-medium settings? Then determine from there whether or not you want/need to buy the card they're running or drop down a level.

Assuming user error wasn't a factor, this user post about BF3 and a Samsung 27" 120Hz LCD might help:

If I had to hazard a guess, you're probably looking at HD 6950 2GB Crossfire at a minimum. That also means a new PSU as well. I'd PM the above user and ask him if he's willing to play BF3 at low settings and see what kind of FPS he gets.

6950 2gb crossfire is not to bad. Hopefully I can get some nice deals when the 7950s come out. I thought 6950 are better power efficient or is it because the 2gb version require a lot more power?

Am I crazy for wanting to play bf3 on low setting?

I have a tri-fire setup and I have a hard time maintaining anything close to 120 fps on BF3 at Ultra settings. Before the Samsung I was using a 30" ZR30w and had no problems maintaining 60fps on Ultra.

So my guess it requires more more GPU muscle to maintain 120fps at 1080p than 60fps at 2560x1600, and due to dot pitch on the 27" 1080p monitor I also need to have AA set at 4x minimum.

Have 2 7970's on the way so I'll see how those compare to my trifire 6900's.

The power difference between the 1GB and 2GB HD 6950 cards is very small. The problem is if you're using two HD 6950 cards. That's fairly power heavy especially once you start overclocking the CPU.

IMO, yes.

Well it is a beautiful game so I see your point. I swear I'm not crazy, just PTSD. Just don't spend the night at my house =)

Is there a chance that you can test BF3 at medium settings with 4x AA with the tri-fire 6900s? Or even High? Just trying to get an idea of how much GPU power the OP would need if he decides up the game's graphics settings or if he wants continue with the low settings plan.
