I have an E6300 and a Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3. My memory is Ballistix PC2-6400 with 4-4-4-12 timings. I also have the Zalman 9700LED installed.

Is it better for me to set the FSB to 400mhz or to choose a lower speed and increase the multiplier?

The multiplier is locked at 7x, so increasing it is out of the question. Set your RAM at 2:1 (or 1:2, I'm blanking out right now), and OC it to, say, 2.8 gHz (400 mHz FSB). Your RAM will be back at 800mHz. From there, increase it bit by bit, until it starts getting unstable, and find the highest point possible where it remains stable.

i did the same thing...400x7 at 1.25v. anything higher i cant boot into windows. not sure what the problem is. crappy ram probably.

at 1.25v.

hmm thats lower than my E6300's stock voltage. Give it 1.375 and see where you get.
(after about 425FSB you might need to loosen your ram timings.)

Don't mean to hijack the thread but I have exactly the same setup and I'm mostly stable at 2.8GHz.

Thing is... I'm not satisfied, knowing other people get more out of this CPU easily. My memory(in sig) is rated at 400MHz, so going higher can be a problem.... Do you know anyone that was able to go higher than 2.8MHz with my ram? I see plenty reviews on egg where people easily went higher, but I don't want to risk before I know the exact memory settings with someone using my exact hardware.

I set mine at 2.8 too because it is dead stable without me having to spend a ton of time testing settings out.

ibex333, are you trying to over clock just to hit a higher number or is there something cpu intensive you are trying to do. I have yet to see my cpu usage come even close to 50% for most things/tasks I do and occasionally higher for the newer games.

I set ram to 2:1 and FSB to 400 and turned of the extra things in the bios like virtualization and so on.

Well mostly I want to do it because I can. However, I'm also thinking about the future. Chances are, by the time my CPU at 2.8GHz will be too slow to handle modern games/proggies I'll be able to buy a new one anyway, but I don't want to count on that. I just want to know how I'd have to go about getting to 3.0GHz in case this will be needed for something.

stock fsb is 1066

bump that to 1850
raise your cpu voltage to 1.40
your nb voltage to 1.3-5v

up your memory to 925mhz at 2.1v so its a 1:1 divider (max performance)

1.86ghz to 3.24ghz - 24hr orthos small fft stable

edit: im using super talent budget memory ddr2 800 5 5 5 15 2t. all i did was up it 925 and raised the volts. no need to loosen the timings. especially with better ram you might even be able to lower the timings

their is a c2d overclocking sticky or post that has a spreadsheet of everyones overclocks and what their setup was. This was where I got my base figures. I can't find it for the life of me right now though so maybe someone else can fill in the blank.

In that setup you can see the timings and vcore that everyone used if I remember correctly. I didn't pay attention to that as I was only changing my FSB.
