Okay, I have about $150 for a videocard, looking to upgrade my radeon 7500 so I can play doom 3/hl2. I was originally looking at the Powercolor 9800se and then softmoding it to a 9800pro.

Any other cards I should be looking at?

a softmod is luck of the draw. I heard with the 9800se's there was less than a 50/50 shot at a decent softmod.

look at a 5900xt. Not sure what they are priced at, but they are a decent card, faster than a 9600xt (which is also a lot faster than a stock unmodded 9800se), and not much more expensive - if not the same price.

I did the softmod and got some artifacts, had to use rtool to disable the zbuffer, then i went away.
That was with the 4.7 cats.

Works good for me.

5900xt or 9800Pro/9700Pro would be good enough...

msi 5900xt great card, but micro center has a vision tec 9600xt for $159 on sell now.cant beat lifetime war. :D

Get a 9700 pro or 9800 pro if u want to spend a bit more. It will wreck a 5900xt, even after overclocking (dont forget the radeons overclock nicely too. See my sig. My 9700s faster than 980xt's stock.)

Refurbs are always sketchy, and I love my 9800 Pro. Maybe look on the for sale forums for a good deal?

yep exactly what everyone else is saying...

A used 9800 pro...
A refurb 9800 pro...
Or a new 9600XT

I personly just got my 9800 pro today... I moved up from a 9600XT.

WOW, what a difference!!!

I really recommend getting the 9800 pro!

good luck! ;)

Brand new Sapphire 9800 PRO for 186. Chances are, it's got a R360 core and you can mod it into a 9800XT.

That's the best deal there is AFAIK right now, and it's new.

What about this one........Sapphire Radeon 9600XT 256MB DDR Video Card, AGP8x, DVI/TV-Out w/S-Video Output Cable
Part Number: VD-25807Regular price: $184.99On Sale: $172.00 with HL2 coupon

9800xt = 9800se

How do you get that???? If you're lucky, you've only got a 50% chance of the mod working, and if it does work, from everyone I've seen it turns the card to a 9800pro. Did they change the core on it or something?

If the mod doesn't work, then the 9600xt will spank that 9800se.

I think i'm goin for retartedchickens instant gradification (he lives right down the street, and I'm poor :( and need to save for quakecon. So $110 is a helluva deal
