I'm looking to buy cpu/board for this build I had discussed earlier. I do not have a set budget persay, but I do not want to spend more than $200. I already bought 4gb ddr3 on a newegg sale a few weeks ago for like $35 bucks so I don't need ram. I'm still not in any major rush as she's using a small laptop right now so we do not need it completed asap or anything, so I can wait if I should for something better to come into the budget lineup.

long story short my main question: which offers the best bang for my buck in the dual core low end. i3, athlon, c2d, phenom?
 
C2D is an outdated CPU socket so thats out of the running.
Core i3 is just overpriced IMO unless you are making a HTPC or a server of somesorts

Honestly it's a tie between the Athlon II X2 and the Phenom II X2 CPUs. Both the cheapest versions of those CPUs have really good price to performance ratios. With that said, if you wanna talk quad-cores, the Athlon II X4 640 CPU at $100 and the Phenom II X4 955 CPU at $145 are also great values as well.
 
After reviewing your earlier thread, I recommend the Athlon II X4 640 over any dual-core.
 
thanks. I had thought that of the i3, but have no experience with so I thought I may be convinced otherwise.

clock for clock, is the upgrade from athlon to phenom worth it?

After looking at the price differences I may end up with a quad. it'd be way more future proof. so Even though a touch more, it'd be worth it long term I assume.
 
Athlon x3 gets my vote. 3.3 ghz for 85 bucks on the egg

I have x2 Athlons x1 445 and x1 450 & I cant get either of them to unlock at all with any voltage tweaks. If i had to do it all over again I would of gotten a x4 core but I had it in my head they would unlock & they didnt.

i also had a x3 720 that did not unlock at all & DannyBUI just got a x3 720 that didnt unlock either so i wouldnt get my hopes up its not worth the gamble

Yeah wouldn't bank on the unlocks either.
 
Betting on an unlock was a safe bet a year ago.. Now not so much.. That being said I would still take a 89 dollar AMD Athlon II X3 455 Rana 3.3GHz over a AMD Athlon II X4 635 Propus 2.9GHz at 98 bucks for gaming.. Most games will benefit more from the Extra Mhz then the Extra Core.. & when you factor in the lower price & the "possibility" of an unlock.. Then to me thats not too hard of a decision to make.
