hey everyone, i have a HP pavillion a6152n PC.

Windows Experience Index rating of 5.5
Intel Core 2 Quad CPU @2.40GHz
3GB RAM
e-GeForce 9600 GSO Graphics card- 384Mb DDR3
operating on 32bit windows Vista

I had been running dual SMP clients for a while, and started getting some MISSING_WORK_UNIT errors on them. so i deleted the work folder, and the queue.dat. then after i got home from work the one i fixed was OK, but the other client had a M_W_U error, i have tried several time to fix it, but it gets a work unit then gets the same error, not to mention it leaves my other smp client running only on 2 cores.. so i just gave up and only run one of the smp clients now, and my Nvidia GPU client..

I know i can increase my PPD, i just need help knowing what clients i should be running and at what settings.

thanks in advance for any help.

How about the GPU client? What is the output compared to the craptastic SMP windows client?

Part of the EUE problem can possibly (not an expert, but I've seen it happen before) be heat related. The stock HSF I don't believe is meant to run 100% (and therefore 100% heat load) 24/7. You can possibly be getting too hot and therefore not stable.

A small investment in a better HSF may allow you to be more stable as a folder 24/7.

The GPU client is also a good choice. You'll get good numbers out of the GPU that you have installed. If this is not a full time folder, you may be more stable using just one SMP client. You can most certainly do 2, but starting and stopping dual SMP clients is more problematic. In addition, if it is not a full time folder, you may start to miss deadlines if running two.

its really fast, its been turning in about 6 WU's per day if im counting right, and i believe im getting 500 PPU so its giving me around 3000ppd by itself. . my smp client turns in only 1-2 WU's per day but its usually worth ALOT more points. id say i average about 1500PPD per smp client..

so any tips on an optimal setup for this machine?

yeah im looking to get one, the fans in my case are loud as hell, it never seems to be really hot though..i really dont want to kill my quad core... now my ps3 on the otherhand.... im scared to keep it too close to the wall, its might start a damn fire.. (my ps3 is folding 24/7 too)

Hey brotherman dannifood4less, I gots nothin' but sympathy for you. I have a couple Q6600's also runnin' the GPU2 clients (core #3, 8800GT, 8800GS) I have had nothing but problems with EUEing when I tried to also run the WinSMP client for the CPU. (no OC', all versions of 6.22 and even the extended 5.xx something client, makes you wonder if maybe the Stanford WinSMP WU's ain't just crapo' in the programming department )

What I do is get about 5200 PpD from my GT and about 4500 PpD from my GS (depending on the WU). With those two PpD's and another 2500 or so (also depending on what WU) from a E6600 I have doing LinSMP 24/7 I get above 10k PpD and I'm in "fat city" because that's about all I want. :D The rest of the quads cores (0, 1, 2) are 24/7 on the WCG clients, I've been doin' WCG for about a month completely trouble free (no burps, no EUE's, even less temps on my quads CPU's). :p

On my Q6600's with dual 9800GTX's running XP, I ..........
Run 2x GPU clients locked to CPU 3.
Run 2x Linux SMP clients inside VM's isolated on CPU cores 0-2.
6k from GPU and 1.5-2k from each VM. 15-16k per box for 350 watts from the wall.

I find the Linux SMP client is more robust-stable than the Windoze SMP client.
Also running it inside VM's, I just need to set affinity on the VM's not on the client.
The downside is that making the VM disk images can be difficalt, but once made you just clone the image.

Luck ............ :D

If I were you I'd get the GPU client set up ASAP, and just let the SMP client run on the other 3 cores. The GPU client ALONE will produce about 4-5000PPD for you with that card that you have. If you need help setting up the GPU client, go here: http://www.hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1032943611&postcount=4
i had the GPU client set up already,,, (might not be optimal setup) but its runnin'. i think its getting 3kPPD....how exactly do i lock the gpu to one core, and let the smp use the other 3? I just want to get the optimal setup on this machine.... its looking like i already the right clients running, i just need to tweak the settngs..

i also have a question, say i get both smp clients working, would it be better to run dual smp and the gpu, or just stick with one smp and the gpu?

With the Windows SMP client I normally suggest 1 SMP client only. The damn client is unstable enough as it is and often it's not worth running 2 of them at the same time. You'll take a hit on the PPD running only 1 SMP client but it will probably end up being better in overall PPD if there are no crashes.

I use the environment variable to lock my dual GPU clients to the same core.
Guide
On a quad core set it to 8, that forces all GPU clients onto CPU core 3.
Then use Bill2 process manager to move the SMP client to cores 0-2.
But I've not run a naked Windoze SMP client in over a year, all mine are Linux SMP clients inside VM's which makes moving them easier.

Luck .............. :D

It's been with my limited experience in the setting up of the F@H GPU2 client (newer drivers, newer GPU's, etc) the program always locks on core #3 affinity and a "low" priority.

I agree with the previous poster (SmokeRngs) about only using one WinSMP client with a GPU2 client on a Q6600 CPU. In fact, I wouldn't ever recommend the WinSMP client at all (IMHO crumby WU's and way too many stability problems :(). I'd use VMWare and a Linux OS. With VMWare the Stanford server will see a guad as a dual and allows you to get the A2 WU's more readily. In my experience a "dual' has a better chance at getting the better A2 WU's than a "quad" ;) (Windows doesn't even have a A2 WU AFAIK)

About "tweaking" the system. I only have WinXP ATM and I don't think Linux needs you to mess with priority or affinity. Go to task manager, processors tab, look for anything using CPU resources (like 24 or 25), use the drop down menu (left click your mouse over the image name you want to set) and set either affinity, priority or both. In my case, it's been a "one shot deal", but I check it pretty regularly. (the WinSMP client or the LinSMP client, not the GPU2 client, WU times are way too short on the GPU2 client )

Hope this helps :p

well, i ended up going with just the gpu and 1 smp client. the second spm client keeps buggin out on me. so now I'm running
3725 PPD on the GPU
1308 PPD on the SMP
5033 PPD TOTAL

eh, i kinda wanted to get this machine near 8kPPD.
